We were talking last night about how it’s very funny actually that most of Tolkien’s mythos establishes elves as such an ancient, melancholy race with a fraught, tragic history that by the era of LotR is fading in the world and most of his major elf characters reflect this in one way or another (some more so than others, and in the books in particular they’re not all exclusively grave and serious, but on the whole it’s still a lot of their vibe)

And then you have Legolas, who doesn’t even have a canon age but is almost definitely very young for a Tolkien elf (we found this one very compelling article that suggests he’s still decently shy of a thousand) and who mostly has the character traits “won’t stop being cheerful” and “drinks loves his friends juice” and like, definitely still is very elf and as a result reflects some of how the rest of them are but also is definitely very different from a lot of Tolkien’s elf characters
