PAPER CUT REFLECTION
Mandatory prompts: 1. Introduce the project. What was the studio project challenge all about? What were you asked to do?
We were asked to create a project based on a message. Something that we have gone through, that you wish to present in your work. In this case I chose the message to preserve Chinese culture. You see the effects of westernization, people throwing away their beliefs. This was the hardest part, to find a sufficient way to express these beliefs.
2. Summarize the process of making this work? Did your actual studio piece end up looking differently than you had envisioned in your final plan? If yes, explain why it changed. If no, what challenges came up when making the work? How did you address these challenges?
I had to plan out the most important piece in the message, which was the small pagoda like house in the bottom. I had to find a actually way to separate it from the large buildings and skyscrapers. This was where the mountains came in, I was scrolling through some wallpapers, where these huge majestic hills of Tibet came up. I decided to use that as my borderline. I addressed my challenges with luck and precision, as shown above.
3. Effort and Artistic growth Did you challenge yourself to try out new ideas and techniques in this project? Did you apply yourself fully to making your best possible work? Did you take full advantage of class time? Looking at your completed work, do you think you’ve grown and matured as an artist? Explain.
I challenged myself a lot, I didn’t go for details or designs. I didn’t want mine to be the best, but my message to be the most clear. Aside from drawing dragons and humans, I wanted others to understand why I was creating this piece. Paper-cutting is quite interesting and I will definitely continue to use this amazing phenomenon of contrast and precision.
