F(Working at ETS) = Success

Now that hiring season for ETS has begun, here is some more incentive to apply! Not only will you be able to earn the highly coveted title of Student Consultant (and receive all of its relevant perks), but you’ll also have the chance to employ your talents--as well as learn new ones--by joining one of the many functions we offer here. I know you might be asking, “Functions? You mean these kinds of functions?”

Well, fortunately (or unfortunately), the functions we’re talking about are quite different from the kind above. At ETS, there are four main families functions: Training, Design, Marketing, and Knowledge Management, each unique in its own design and purpose. By joining one of these functions, not only will you be paid an astounding $15.11 (yup, you read that right) for every hour of function work, you’ll be working with fellow coworkers on many fun and worthwhile projects as well as the grander project of constantly improving ETS for consultants and clients alike. Not to mention, you’ll also get to expand your skill set and get real world experience applying the skills you learn along the way!

Sound interesting? Great, this is just one of the many ways ETS allows its consultants to develop professionally. Each family function works as a team to collaborate different ideas and use various software and tools to carry out their function. Look below for short blurbs on what each one of them does!

Training.

The Training Function is primarily involved in making sure consultants are up-to-date in their knowledge of ETS in addition to leading workshops that expand the staff’s skills and knowledge in different areas during in-person trainings. By joining this function, not only will you be able to get the chance to learn cool new skills, you’ll also gain valuable experience learning how to communicate and teach those skills to your fellow coworkers.

Design.

From promotional posters to infographics, the Design Function works tirelessly to spread information about our services in the most aesthetically-pleasing way. Also, if you’re interested in breaking into brand development, working in the Design Function will definitely equip you with the perfect skill set as you maintain our brand image.

Marketing.

The Marketing Function spearheads marketing campaigns that aim to promote and showcase the countless resources and services we offer here in the drop-in facilities. They work on various projects ranging from expansion of social media engagement to building brand awareness both in the facilities as well as on campus.

Knowledge Management.

The Knowledge Management Function’s goals are to update and consolidate knowledge on our staff website, in addition to making information easier to access for our consultants to better help our clients. If you think you might have a passion for website designing and making informational resources available, this might be the function for you!

Could it get any better than that? ETS provides several opportunities for personal and professional development. Don’t worry if you find yourself with no previous experience; all of our consultants will learn the skills they need to carry out the duties of each function. Each member plays a pivotal role in making ETS the great campus resource it is, so whether you call it a family or function, you’ll be learning a wide breadth of skill sets while contributing enormously to the campus community.

We’re HIRING!!!

Have you ever wondered “How is everyone so skilled at everything? Where did they even learn how to code? How do all their photos come out amazing? I can barely even college, how do they have the time?”

Well we can tell you first off, honing in on these skills doesn’t happen overnight. Here at ETS, consultants get training on a wide breadth of technical skills. As part of our job, we take a series of application workshops, where we learn how to write code, how to use Adobe Creative Cloud, and how to use intricate Excel spreadsheet algorithms. We provide a supportive environment for learning new skills.

All of our consultants come in with little or no experience, but we take their input for what workshops they want to see, and provide training for the new skills. Wait did this just cross your mind: You get PAID as consultants to LEARN these cool skills? YUP! It’s all part of our ongoing training program.We believe that to be the most effective consultants, we need to train ourselves up in technical skills, constantly practicing them to help our clients. This is why ETS is a great student campus employer! ETS helps consultants develop professional real world skills that carry us beyond front-end troubleshooting, and propel us to achieve organizational advancement and project management experience.

A Little Thank You...

Welcome back Bears! We hope you all had a fun and egg-cellent Spring Break (excuse the pun). Was that break needed or what? Now that we’re getting back into the swing of things, we can look forward to the next break, the break of all breaks: Summer.

Until then, we want to express our utmost appreciation for many of our consultants who are some of the most positive and helpful associates on campus. We owe it to our consultants who run and maintain our facilities and provide you with all the troubleshooting and customer service help you need. To showcase our thankfulness for them, we have launched the Student Consultant Appreciation Program (SCAP) where consultants nominate a fellow consultant that they see going above and beyond in providing customer-focused support. To kickoff SCAP, join us in congratulating our nominees Jeff Lau, Amy Ma, and Daniel Yee for always providing friendly customer service to our clients and demonstrating leadership qualities on shift. They have definitely embodied the qualities that ETS values as a campus employer. Kudos!

What makes ETS special as a campus employer?

Hello fellow students!

Over the past few weeks, we have been working hard to get ready for recruiting season. Be prepared bears, recruiting for the Consultant positions among other openings will start shortly after Spring Break. So what makes ETS special as a campus employer? What do employees actually think about this organization? What better way to finding out by just asking one of our fellow consultants?

Meet Jeff Wang, a 3rd year Political Economy and City Planning double major who has been with ETS for 2 years now. We sat down with him to get his take on what his experience in ETS has been like…

What is your favorite part about working for ETS?

My favorite part would have to be getting to work with other students and playing a part in campus technology solutions.

What are some skills that you developed through working for ETS?

I learned project management tools like Atlassian Confluence and Asana. ETS also helped me learn how to balance working in multiple teams and roles.

What is one way that you’ve developed professional skills that you didn’t expect to do through working at ETS?

I didn’t expect to learn Adobe tools, but I did when I joined the Design function. I also didn’t know I’d be able to take on leadership positions within the organization and build up my professional experience.

What kind of person would you recommend to work at ETS?

Anyone who is looking to grow professionally while being a student. This job is perfect for anyone who wants to get more involved in the campus technology realm.

It’s THAT time of the year again!

One of the sweetest times of the semester is coming up at Cal. Mmm yes Spring Break, we’ve all been waiting for it. Hopefully you’re done with midterms and can finally relax.  No more having to snooze your alarm 17 times before finally waking up. Goodbye long nights of procrastination-induced stress, hello long nights of indulging in missed Netflix shows.

We hope your Spring Break will be everything you planned it to be. But what we’re really looking forward to is coming back from Spring Break. Whaaaa? Yes we know, it sounds crazy. But with school resuming after break, it will mean ETS is one week closer to HIRING season. We’re looking forward to filling several positions across the ETS organization. We’re sad to see much of the ETS family leave us as they graduate, but we’re thrilled to welcome new team members. ETS will start hiring between April 3 and April 9.

Student Consultant, $12/hr. By far our most sought after position for the upcoming hiring season.

The consultant will serve assist clients in using computer software such as Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office in the general access and instructional facilities.

Auditorium Staff, $12/hr.

Set up and monitor audio and visual equipment in lecture auditoriums. Oversight of all camera operations: monitoring, switching, and cutting

HDDA/Dispatch, $14/hr.

Provide customer service and troubleshooting support via phone or in-person for the Berkeley campus community regarding classroom technology issues and audio/visual equipment use

All Staff Meeting Recap

Yaaay! We just had our all staff meeting, and boy did it kick off the semester right! We started the meeting, as only meetings should start, with a copious amount of the finest cuisine… well something like that, it was kind of a super awesome potluck. Kudos to all the staff that cooked and/or brought food to the meeting! We got a chance to hear from all the project managers and the incredible work being done both in functions and in the facilities by our consultants. We heard the improvements made in the quality of the service we provide as well as exciting projects that ETS is embarking on, such as offering iClicker support.

Let’s start first by congratulating Meagan and Chloe for their new lead positions as Recruiting Project Manager and Function Project Manager, respectively. Cheers! We’re looking forward to their enthusiastic attitudes as they innovate recruitment opportunities and function work.  During the meeting, Janae Spinato even led us in honing in our improv skills by practicing with each other. We had a montage of hilarious moments improvising outlandish scenes. Are we now basically pro improv performers? Yes and… we’re also better consultants because of Janae’s fun improv workshop.

So what was the BIG announcement that was made at the meeting? Well, (this is hush hush, but we just have to spill it) we’re really excited to unveil Maker Space, a new project that will be showcased in the Moffitt Computer Facility later this semester. Maker Space will be a space reserved on the 1st floor in Moffitt specifically for 3-D printing. Yes that means there will be a 3-D printer available for you to use! And no it doesn’t mean you need to be an engineer with crazy technical skills to use the printer. We, the consultants at ETS, will be there to show you how to use it. No All-Staff Meeting is complete without thanking the man that is the backbone of our organization, our very own Jon Crumpler *fierce applause*. We offer a very special thanks to Jon who has demonstrated incredible leadership this year during ETS’s expansion.

Lastly, big thanks to ALL of the staff in ETS from the consultants that keep our facilities operating day in and day out to the staff behind the scenes making sure our classroom technology is working, and everyone in between. What is an ETS Blog?

Hi ETS Staff and Friends,              

Welcome to our Tumblr blog! ETS has officially created an electrifying blog, and we’re eager to share with you all snapshots of ETS life. Be honest. We know you’ve been waiting for this moment. We’re excited too!

At ETS, our goal is to provide an amazing experience to all our clients that come to use our computer facilities on campus, while giving you the tools you need to study (and yes that includes comfortable couches). We’re equipped to show you around the ropes whether it’s to learn how to print wirelessly or to assist in using some computer applications. Know that if you have a question, we got you. If you haven’t been to a facility, bring a friend to study and check them out. Really, studying at a facility in Wheeler, VLSB, Tolman, or 1st floor Moffitt will make your efficiency skyrocket*!

If you’re wondering what makes ETS so special, you’re not alone. All of us consultants at one point asked this and it wasn’t until we checked out the awesome study spaces and computer facilities on campus that we knew what all the buzz was about. It’s the friendly staff and the study spaces that make ETS great! I mean have you checked out the Tech Lounge in Tolman? Did you even know we had a tech lounge? Let us just say, it’s uh-mazing. We hope to bring you a glimpse into what ETS life is like. Also, keep an eye out for helpful blog posts and some big announcements regarding hiring.
