Burn With Desire

I recently had the pleasure of documenting the Burn with Desire exhibition on now at the Ryerson Image Centre. It runs until April 5th, but there is an exhibition tour with curator Gaëlle Morel on February 4th at 6pm. 

It's a beautiful and thought provoking show (not to mention the other shows on), I highly recommend making time to see it!

America Restaurant

I recently had the pleasure of photographing two new restaurants in the Trump Tower here in Toronto. America is located on the 31st floor and has a lot of unique details and some beautiful art! We spent the entire night shooting and had some gorgeous views of the quiet city to keep us company (and lots of coffee).

Hollace Cluny Campaign

Earlier this year I was approached by Hollace Cluny and their marketing agency Studio M.A. to photograph a series of vignettes that would be used for various ads. With the help of Hollace Cluny's amazing stylist, we had free range to use any of the gorgeous furniture and unique design pieces to create some beautiful photographs!

We also created a short video to introduce Hollace Cluny's new showroom, check it out in the previous post.

Hollace Cluny Video

I’ve been sitting on this for a while, but I’m excited to finally be able to share a short video I directed for contemporary furniture retailer Hollace Cluny. They have some truly stunning pieces so it was a pleasure capturing all the little details of their new showroom.

I also shot a variety of images for their ads and will share those next week!

Jeffrey Boase for Ryerson Magazine

Without a doubt, scientists are my favourite subjects to photograph. I've shot quite a few and they're always working on something fascinating regardless of their field.

Ryerson University's Jeffrey Boase studies how our digital interactions impact our real world social circles. The story I photographed was about his latest research into how teen smartphone use impacts their real world interactions. Contrary to what some may think, those who spend more time on online social networks, not only have more friends in the real world but also spend more time with them and have deeper connections than their less web savvy counterparts.

We were able to shoot a variety of setups for this including an emoji portrait inspired by these videos and several more conceptual "research" images.

Toronto Skyline at 200 Megapixels

I was recently approach by Brad J. Lamb's team with a particularly interesting project. They had moved into their (gorgeous) new offices and Brad J. Lamb wanted a wall-sized mural of Toronto's skyline at night for behind his desk.

They had been trying to get the shot for a few months before they came to me and the main issue with the previous attempts was that there wasn't enough resolution for such a large print. Being obsessed with detail in my large scale gallery work I could sympathise with the problem. I managed to get a hold of a GigaPan Pro (thanks Neil Ta!) and after a few tests we were ready to shoot.

Access was another issue, the shot needed to be from high up but also feel like you were in the city so shooting from the island wasn't an option. After several days of back and forth with various locations we managed to get 30 minutes of access to the roof of the Manulife Centre - exactly how long it would take to do a single pass with the GigaPan! Knowing there would be no redos, I triple checked all the settings and started shooting. 

Everything came together in post and we came away with a spectacular 200 megapixel panorama of the city that was quickly approved by the printer and up within a week or so! I hear it's quite a hit with visitors to the office.

Adventures in Brazil

Watching the opening World Cup match yesterday took me back to my adventures in Brazil. A few years ago my brother moved to São Paulo (his wife is from there) and I've had the pleasure of visiting twice now. It goes without saying that Brazil is a beautiful country. It has megacities with world famous architecture, jungles with a dizzying array of flora, monkeys(!), and gorgeous beaches where you can learn to surf, play a game of volleyball, or just lay back with an ice cold cerveja and take it all in.

One of the Top 100 Photographers in Canada

I'm excited to finally share that I've been named one of the top 100 photographers in Canada by the Magenta Foundation, and will be included in their special edition book-set celebrating ten years of Flash Forward. I'm also proud to share the honor with so many friends and former classmates.

The Magenta Foundation is a non-profit arts publishing house, best known for their Flash Forward books that show off the top upcoming photographers in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. They're also behind the brilliant photography festival by the same name.

House of Hoops for Always with Honor

A couple of months ago I was approached by Portland-based design / illustration studio Always with Honor to photograph an interesting project they were working on in Toronto. They made the logo of the popular design blog The Fox is Black (which is how I first heard of them) and create unique illustrations and iconography for some of the top brands in the world.

In Toronto they created a set of murals for Nike's House of Hoops in Foot Locker. These included a large animated mural and a layered, relief style, installation. Upon seeing the animation aspect I knew immediately that a hybrid approach was the only way to tell the full story of this unique project.

Bar Buca for Canadian Business

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of shooting another dish for Canadian Business' The Lunch Scout section. This time we were shooting Bar Buca's delicious rock shrimp, which I, having sampled it extensively, couldn't recommend more. In fact, I enjoyed Bar Buca so much that I went back a few days later for a full meal!

Gallery Views for the RIC

Since the launch of the Ryerson Image Centre a couple of years ago there has been a constant rotation of phenomenal programming. I've shot gallery views for several of their shows and it's fantastic to be able to see new exhibitions before they open to the public and spend a couple hours absorbing them alone.

As CONTACT begins to ramp up the RIC has a great lineup, the first two images are from the Stan Douglas show, he's the recipient of the Scotiabank Photography Award. The last two images are of Zanele Muholi’s show Faces and Phases.

Stan Douglas will also be giving a talk tomorrow (Wed Apr 30) evening at 7:30pm (LIB-72, 350 Victoria Street), be sure to get their early as these sort of things fill up fast!

Green Rush

I've photographed various aspects (some less than legal) of the marijuana industry for several years as I worked on my It's Medicinal project. So I jumped at the chance to create some dramatic portraits for Report on Business's cover story about Canada's changing marijuana laws, which go into effect today, and the big players paving the way forward.

The Bay Shoe Department

I'm excited to finally share some promo images I shot for The Bay of their new shoe department - the largest in Canada. There was so much ground to cover that we had to pull an all-nighter, starting as soon as the last customers left and pushing through until the staff arrived in the morning!
