@eupram-blog
the atemporal provocation gambit is when you use what someone says halfway through an argument to justify why you were so angry with them at the beginning of the argument.
I desperately want a discussion of modest dress that isn’t a) religious or b) radfeminist.
My reasons for dressing modestly are closer to the former than to the latter, but I’m still uncomfortable with applying teleology to them. And obviously I’m not down with how much slut-shaming bullshit flies under the latter.
I don’t know how to frame my choices so they aren’t perceived as judgment on “those poor whores ~giving themselves away~”.
Agreed. (I should probably elaborate later? IDK.)
We should start this discussion! It’s nice to know there’s another one.
I agree too, but I’ve just been claiming (truthfully) to get cold really easily so I don’t have much sophisticated thought lined up. I think for me it’s something like “I don’t want people to think about me as having a biological body” or “I don’t want people to notice the parts of my appearance I can’t control (my body), I want them to focus on the parts I can control (hairstyle, clothes, accessories).”
^^^ “I don’t want people to think about me as having a biological body” is a big part of it for me, and also “I feel like the way I am dressed is setting the modest end of the Overton window for unremarkable clothing for my social group and I prefer that the Overton window for unremarkable clothing be really wide” and also “I like what I’m signaling” and also -
(and this is maybe the part Skye was worried it’s hard to talk about without sounding like one is slut-shaming?)
- I don’t get street harassed! Street harassment sounds terrifying and I’m really glad that it doesn’t happen to me at all! I have never been catcalled or shouted at or approached and hit on by strangers! I understand that some people who dress conservatively still get street harassed, and I understand that people absolutely shouldn’t have to dress conservatively to not get street harassed, but also I expect there’s a causal relationship between the way I dress and the never-getting-hit-on-by-strangers and for me, personally, that is a tradeoff well worth making. And I wish it were more straightforward to talk about whether this tradeoff exists and how people feel about it without making anyone feel shamed for their choices.

“We were built to think alike. Everything is so standardized in the military that you can function without thinking. If I ever needed night vision goggles, somebody could throw me their bag, and I’d know exactly what pocket to find them in. We were like cogs in a wheel. And that may sound like a bad thing—but it’s not. Nobody wants to think of themselves as cogs in a wheel, but humans love structure. Our behavior is predictive. All of us tend to be in the same place, at the same time, every single day. The tendency is just accelerated in the military. And it feels good. It feels good to know your place. It feels good to wear the same uniform. It feels good to know exactly what you’re contributing to the mission, to the team, and to the country as a whole. Your value is so clear. But then you come home and the lines are blurred. It’s hard to discover that value again. You’re not sure where you fit. You’re not sure how you connect to other people. You’re not sure how to make a difference. It can be very isolating. And all you want to do is be back on a team.”
Research by Ragen McGowan & others at (University of Agricultural Sciences, Sweden) investigates whether dogs enjoy the experience of solving a problem in order to obtain a reward, or if it is just the reward itself that makes them happy. Rather unusually, the idea came from a study that found cattle who completed a task to earn a reward seemed to be happier than those who just received the reward. The design of McGowan’s study is very similar, but adjusted for dogs. The results show that when dogs solved the problem and earned a reward they wagged their tails more and were more eager to repeat the experience than if they were just given a reward. The study also found that food was a preferred reward over time with another dog and petting from a familiar human.
