Hungary 2016
Pioneer, performed by Freddie. Composition: Zé Szabó. Lyrics: Borbála Csarnai.
There’s a hint of The Scorpions’ love of whistling hiding inside ’Pioneer’. There’s a hint of choral power. There’s even a hint of tenderness that could break out into a classic power ballad. Here lies my problem with Freddie’s entry.
There are hints of greatness, but nothing is developed, nothing stands out, and the song itself offers a rather boring three minutes. It has the motif that is going to fill the three minutes, and it is… satisfied. No more, no less.
The song ’Pioneer’ manages to do the exact opposite of the title. It pioneers nothing. It’s happy to play it safe, qualify, and not embarrass Hungary.
Sorry, I want more.
Semi Final: Points: 197: Placing: 4th. Grand Final: Points: 108. Placing: 19th.
