The kitchen was bathed in the soft golden light of late afternoon, the kind that made everything look cozier than it already was. The smell of chocolate chips and sweet dough filled the air, mingling with the faint scent of vanilla from the batter you were stirring.
Your daughter perched on the counter, legs swinging, eyes wide as she watched every move you made. She was practically vibrating with excitement, bouncing slightly as she tried to explain something very important.
“So first, I put the stars on the crown,” she said, pointing at the colorful paper and little glittery stones she’d used the day before. “Then the ribbon goes here, and I made a heart for you because it’s your birthday!”
Percy was pressed snugly against your back, one arm wrapped around your waist, the other hand tapping along to the soft, cheerful music he’d put on. He leaned down just enough to whisper in your ear, “You know, your kid is really ambitious. That crown sounds like a masterpiece.”
“She’s an artist,” you murmured, smiling over your shoulder as you mixed the batter.
Percy hummed along to the music, swaying gently, pressing warm kisses to your shoulder now and then. “And she’s a great teacher too, huh? Step by step, like a pro.”
Your daughter nodded eagerly. “You gotta do it just like me, Dada! I even added the glitter so it sparkles.”
Percy glanced down at her with a grin. “I see that, jellybean. That’s why it was my favorite gift.” He leaned back slightly to give her a soft kiss on the cheek, and she giggled, throwing her little arms around his neck.
You continued stirring, feeling completely enveloped by the warmth of them both. His other hand rested lightly on your hip, holding you close, rocking you just enough to make your back brush against his chest in that slow, easy rhythm. You could feel his heartbeat through the fabric of your shirt, steady and comforting.
“Okay, now stir slowly, Mommy!” your daughter instructed, reaching for the whisk with your guidance. Percy whispered encouragements to her, his voice soft and playful, “Yes, just like that. You’re amazing at this.”
He glanced at you, green eyes soft, and murmured, “I love you”
You laughed quietly, leaning slightly back into him. “Love you too.”
Your daughter, oblivious to your exchange, leaned forward, showing Percy the last little detail of the crown she had made. “See? The heart has sparkles!”
“I see it, and it’s beautiful,” he said, pressing a quick kiss to her temple. “Just like the maker.”
The three of you stayed like that for a while, your daughter narrating every tiny detail, Percy holding you warm and steady, humming the music softly, and you stirring the batter while stealing little moments of kisses and smiles. The kitchen felt like its own little universe of love, laughter, and golden light.
Finally, as the batter was ready for the oven, Percy reached around you to carefully guide your daughter’s hands as she helped scoop little spoonfuls onto the tray. “Perfect,” he said after each one, leaning in to kiss the top of her head each time.
You glanced at them both, heart swelling. “This is exactly what I wanted today,” Percy whispered, his voice soft and full of warmth.
“Me too,” you said, pressing a gentle kiss to his cheek. “But don’t forget… the best part is still waiting.”
Your daughter’s squeal of delight cut in, “Cookies for Dada!”
Percy chuckled, spinning you both around gently in a little sway. “Yes, jellybean. Cookies for Dada. And kisses. Lots of kisses.”
You leaned back into him fully now, feeling completely safe, completely warm, and completely loved, with the two most important people in your life right there with you.
