synopsis: Y/N meets a mysterious boy at work and helps him out of a stressful situation, leading to a sweet, unexpected connection. They share a short but meaningful moment together before going their separate ways.
"Y/N, can you mind the till for a second? I need to pop into the back room to look for something."
You looked up from the records you were sorting; Jessica, your colleague, was watching you with a smile. You nodded and headed for the till, watching as she quickly disappeared into the back room.
The shop was quiet, with just a few people wandering about, looking at the vinyls and CDs. Suddenly, the doorbell rang, signalling the arrival of a new customer. You smiled as you watched the boy walk in; he looked about your age, wearing a cap and sunglasses, yet you couldn’t help but notice how attractive he was.
“Welcome. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask,” you repeated the same phrase you said to all customers, though this time you hoped he really did have a question. He smiled, nodding his head.
You went about your business, though every now and then you glanced over at the boy; he seemed very engrossed in the vinyl records.
"Hi, we are taking this?"
"Oh perfect" you tore your gaze away from the boy to attend to the couple standing in front of you.
You spoke to them for a few seconds; they told you the CDs were a present for their daughter, who was a huge music fan. You smiled and said a friendly goodbye. By the time you’d finished and tried to look for the boy, he was nowhere to be seen, and there were more than twenty girls in the shop whispering and rushing about.
“I need your help,” said a voice beside you. You jumped in your seat; it had taken you by surprise.
You turned round and right in front of you stood him, the boy you’d been looking for seconds earlier. You smiled kindly, though your smile almost vanished when you saw the look of desperation on his face; he was fidgeting with his hands and looking all around as if he were afraid someone would discover he was there.
“I’m not getting myself into legal trouble for you, no matter how handsome you are.”
He looked at you confusedly, laughed softly and shook his head. “What? Never mind, nobody’s getting into legal trouble,” he said, leaning in a little closer and lowering his voice. “See those girls over there?” he asked, nodding his head to one side.
"Yeah… are those your crazy exes coming after you?" you asked, stepping back a little. He rolled his eyes and moved closer to you again.
"No… it’s a long story, but in short, I’m in a band and those girls are coming after me because they’re… my fans" he whispered the last part sheepishly. You let out a loud laugh, which caused a few glances to fall on you both.
You felt his hand on your arm and as he turned you both away, hiding from the girls who seemed to be getting suspicious, you quickly covered your mouth. “Sorry,” you whispered. He shook his head, bringing his hands to his face in frustration.
“Seonghyeon?” asked one of the girls, approaching the counter. You felt the grip on your arm tighten and terror wash over his face.
“I’m not allowed to be here. If my manager finds out, I’m dead,” he whispered, looking at you with pleading eyes. You nodded, winking at him.
“Leave it to me. Pretend you’re sorting those CDs over there, then go into that room and don’t come out until I tell you,” you said, pointing to some boxes full of CDs. He nodded and slowly made his way over.
You turned around, smiling. Right in front of you, just behind the counter, stood a group of about ten girls staring intently at Seonghyeon (you assumed that was his name from his reaction when he heard it).
"Hello, girls. My colleague is busy. Is there anything I can help you with?" you asked, pretending everything was fine.
They looked at you in confusion and then turned back to Seonghyeon. "Sorry, we thought we’d seen someone."
“No problem. If you have any questions… I’m here,” you smiled, watching them leave, still a little confused, whilst your colleague returned from the storeroom.
“Cover for me for a moment, I’ll be right back and I promise I’ll explain everything later,” you said quickly, running towards the break room.
“I’m here… what are you supposed to be doing?”
Seonghyeon lowered the chair and smiled, trying to look innocent. “I heard footsteps and thought you were someone else.”
“And your first reaction was to hide behind a chair?” you asked, laughing. He rolled his eyes. “Anyway, I think everything’s calm now. You can go out the back door so you can make sure no one follows you.”
You led him to the back of the shop; Seonghyeon was nervously staring at his hands. Once there, you both stopped.
"Thank you so much…" He paused, waiting for you to say your name.
“Y/N,” you said with a smile.
“Thank you so much, Y/N, I owe you one.”
“It’s nothing, good luck.”
You both looked at each other, not quite sure how to say goodbye.
“What time does your shift finish?” he asked bluntly, making you laugh. “We could go for an ice cream, you know… as a thank you.”
“Of course, shall we meet at the ice cream parlour next door in two hours?”
“Great, see you there…” he whispered, turning to leave.
"Bye, Seonghyeon," you said with a laugh; he just shook his head as he walked away.
Those were probably the longest two hours of his life. He tried to distract himself by going to the second-hand shops, but every time he remembered how you smiled or that playful look that was so typical of you, he felt the heat rising to his cheeks and his stomach doing a somersault.
He felt like a fool, searching for your smile in every girl who walked past him, even though he knew you weren’t there. By the time the hour came, he was sitting at one of the tables, turning his head towards the entrance every time someone new came in; he was fidgeting with his feet, and it was already the third time he’d had to wipe the sweat from his palms.
“Did I keep you waiting long?” He looked up, smiled when he saw you, and you smiled back.
You spent a couple of hours there, laughing and chatting. You both had similar tastes in music and enjoyed the same sort of films, so before long you were talking with complete ease.
"So... a band," you said, changing the subject.
“I thought you were faking it, but now I see you really have no idea who I am,” he said with a smile, and you rolled your eyes.
“Did you really think I was capable of that?” you pretended to be offended, which made him laugh.
“You said I was handsome,” he recalled, making you glare at him.
"Objectively speaking, I have eyes—that’s a fact."
"Objectively? I don’t know whether to feel flattered or offended."
"Eat your ice cream," you said, taking his ice-cream cone and bringing it close to his face, smearing his nose.
He opened his mouth, looking at you with feigned surprise, leaning in to try and smear your nose too, which made you laugh and run away from him.
"What on earth are you thinking?" Seonghyeon looked up; Martin stared at him, confused. He simply shook his head, brushing it off.
More than a month had passed since that day in the shop when you helped him escape. Even so, he hadn’t escaped a telling-off from his manager, but it had been worth it because he’d been able to watch the sunset by your side in that park. That day, he hadn’t felt like Seonghyeon from Cortis; he was just another boy, one who had fallen completely in love with you.
Unfortunately for him, his schedule had been very busy; the preparations for today's concert kept him so occupied that he hadn't been able to return to the shop to ask for your number or arrange another date, but not busy enough to stop you from creeping into his mind at every moment.
If he closed his eyes, he could see your face perfectly: the teasing smile you'd given him, or the way your cheeks flushed when you laughed too hard. He felt as though he were under a spell from which he couldn't escape.
"Five minutes and we're off!" someone shouted, snapping him out of his thoughts.
The crowd's cheers snapped him completely out of his thoughts. What he didn't know was that you were there; you'd been dragged along to that concert by your younger sister, who hadn't stopped talking about it, leaving you with no choice but to give in to her pleas to accompany her, knowing how happy it would make her.
What you hadn't expected was to see him there, smiling so broadly, dancing and jumping from one side to the other. For a moment, your eyes met, and it was as if everything had stopped right then and there. For Seonghyeon, it was as if you had come back to him, and he knew that this was his chance; this time he wasn't going to let it slip away, he wouldn't let you go.
You gave him a wink, which made him laugh a little. Almost immediately, he walked over to someone on his team; you saw him whisper something to them whilst pointing towards where you were standing. You smiled and shook your head; he just smiled back.
