“I will continue to do so,” he nodded, glancing out into the fields. “No, not stories. Just… I am more than that.” He looked back towards her. “No, I was never taught.”
“I believe you mean that... for now at least.” She smiled at the thought. “Are you? So you do enjoy that?” She raised a brow, able to keep her authority. “Well you must learn.”

“There is, your grace. Not just me though,” he smiled. “What did you think of me? I… well no. I can’t read. I like spending time outdoors.”
“No. You and a few others that are loyal to me.” She gave him a nod, feeling the evening become darker as they stood there. “Oh now, I was raised to believe all men enjoyed ale and songs and well... perhaps they are just stories.” She blushed, feeling naive. It wasn’t a feeling she often felt and she didn’t like it. “You can’t read? Oh i’ve told you already, the outdoors and i are not great friends.”
“Yes, your grace. You can always count on me,” he nodded, unable not to smile. “Wow… that is. I like to think that I’m deeper than that. But uh…” he gave an awkward laugh.
“Then yes, there is friendship in my life.” She smiled gently. “Oh are you? I have read you completely wrong then. You enjoy a night in, with a good book and warm soup. Rather like my lady grandmother used to.”

“And you? Your grace. Do you have friendship in your life?” he asked. “Order someone to have fun?”
“I have a lady, she is my companion. And now I have you, do i not?” She looked back at him with a smile. She wondered if she could truly trust him... but that would be tested. “Yes, go have some fun. Meet a pretty girl, enjoy everything the tavern has to offer. I know some of ordinary life.”

It was a welcomed comfort to know her so close to him. He could protect her, he had to. Throughout the last weeks, when nothing accompanied Brandan on the road except for his own dark thoughts, it had kept him going that there were still people depending on him in some way. She gave him a purpose when he had thought everything lost and Brandan knew, he would never find the right words to explain how much it meant to him. He had returned and she accepted him back, it took a weight off of his heart while returning another one to his shoulders. But he was used to carrying it and he almost needed it. When she placed her hand upon his arm he could not help but smile. “I would be nothing without your family, too. I owe everything I have to your father, it is only right if I pay it back to you now.”
Deeply distressing? Pass with time? He had expected her to shout and scream, tears felt like the natural reaction to such a terrible incident. But Evangeline had always been someone guided by her head, he knew her too well, he understood her. “It is normal that grief fades, but you are allowed to mourn, princess.” The knight had known that she would be strong, a leader for their people. Brandan was proud of her, of how she held herself, and her father would have agreed with him. “It was a great loss to all of us, but I am sure that we shall emerge even stronger from it.” He wished to tell her I am here now, nothing shall harm you, but he was not brave enough to overstep once again. So Brandan replied with yet another question: “Is a date for the funeral set already?”, he needed to know what was planned. And if there was anything beyond the funeral, a future awaiting the kingdom.
`She allowed his presence to comfort her. She took comfort in friends and loved ones, it was all she had. She could see it in his eyes that he knew she was hurt worse then she was letting on. But even to him, she could not show weakness. She may not be able to put the act back on. “You hold us in such high regards and I thank you.” She nodded, a smile gracing her features.Â
Evan had always been level headed, even as a child she would sit and wait stubbornly while unhappy. But she rarely cried. She knew it wasn’t the way into people’s hearts. “I expect it to hit me any moment...” She sighed honestly, feeling a weight from her chest as she spoke those words. “I have not been alone or.. with friends since it happened. I have not had the opportunity... there is too much at stake for me to fall apart now Sir.” She stepped towards him, almost as if to go for a hug. But she stopped herself. He had been a dear servant and even friend to her father. She smiled at the use of we. “I fear... that I should be mourning a king, as everyone is. But... all I can do is mourn my father.” She spoke honestly, her voice cracking. “The funeral shall take place in two days time... I am eager to lay him to rest. He deserves that. But I must greet as many of the nobles as I can beforehand and.... ideally... I am to choose a husband soon.” She glanced at him. Attempting to read his thoughts. Evan had spoken out many times as a child about how she would only marry a strong man, one worthy of her. Her father had agreed to arrange a match that she approved of. But he was dead and she found herself in a desperate position. She would have to choose someone with power, someone who could help her lead the kingdom... and hopefully wouldn’t try to overpower her. “I do not wish to seem.... presumptuous. But I wish to ascend to the throne... I cannot do so without a king consort.” She emphasised the consort part. She would have no one take her power from her.Â

He was almost afraid to look at her once she’d turned away. He didn’t want to look foolish. “I do not need anything, your grace.” He nodded. “I shall try.”
“Everyone needs something, perhaps it is friendship you need.” She smiled slightly, at the naive thought that someone in this world wanted to just be friends. “You will, that’s an order.”

He looked away as she turned, holding onto his belt for something to do with his hands. “No, no. I don’t need anything. Just… glad to be a friend.”
She smiled gently, unsure if he could see her face and part of her didn’t want him to see it. It was a weakness. “I am glad, because I am not sure what I can offer right now.” She laughed slightly, although it wasn’t exactly funny. “And... I hope you will take some time off to enjoy the winter festival.”Â

Brandan sometimes wished to return to days long gone, when he was only her father’s squire and she a little lady with no worries on her mind. But these days had passed away and with them came and went a great king. A king who deserved a funeral that was worthy of the great deeds he now could never accomplish. He bowed again, escaping her gaze once more. “I will be honoured to do whatever is needed. You must not worry about the security, princess, for I shall not rest until the castle and the chapel are both safe.” He sighed, it hurt to know that now all he had left to do was to protect a dead body. How could he manage that if he even failed at protecting the king while he was alive? “But if I might be blunt, your grace, am I allowed to ask how you have been?”, he knew he was overstepping borders, but ever since Brandan had left the king’s daughters behind to search for the only heir, his heart was filled with worry.
Evangeline was grateful for the help of friends, her ladies had been a godsend. As had the many nobleman who had sworn their loyalty to her father many years ago, although she couldn’t help but feel like many of those men were only after one thing. But from Brandan... she knew what he wanted. She had known the man since she was a girl, she trusted him with her life and perhaps if their statuses were different... they would even be friends. She leant forward placing a hand on his arm. “I thank you... I do not know what this family would do without you. What... I would do without you.” She looked back to him, giving the knight a gentle smile. She knew he must have his own doubts about his abilities right now. But they were no good to her, he was her most trusted and she would have him know that.Â
She sighed when he spoke again, her hand dropping from his shirt. It wasn’t a question she had been asked all too often and it wasn’t one she was looking forward to answering. She wasn’t sleeping well, nor was she resting at all if she were honest. But there was so much to arrange. With the question, the first word that came to mind was fearful. She had been fearful. Of her future, of the kingdom’s future, of the kind of person she would be. “You may ask.” She replied, just as bluntly as he had asked. “And i shall reply as honestly as i am allowed... my father is dead and it is... deeply distressing.” She looked back to him. Holding back any tears. “But... the heartbreak that i feel... it will pass with time.” Â

He returned her smile, doing his best to bring his thoughts back to the current conversation. “I have been told. But I hope… you feel you can trust me.”
She turned her back, knowing that she couldn’t keep staring at the knight and she would if given the chance. “I do.” She knew perhaps that was foolish, the loyalty of knights and men could be bought. “Thank you for being so kind to me, not all are to people of my status. I shall see that it is rewarded.” It was all she knew how to do.Â

His eyes glanced over her… how could they not? She was beautiful, she was elegant, she held herself in a way he had not seen in any other woman. But he was only going to hurt himself by thinking that way. “Thank you for saying such kind words,” he nodded. “Having a friend… can help with a lot.”
She nodded, she meant them. He had only shown her kindness. She smiled gently. “You must have many... in this castle... it can be hard to trust people.”

Elias remained silent for a few moments, the gentle breeze blowing his hair. “And I am very grateful for that. I do my best to live up to it.” He returned her smile. “No? You do not mind?”
He was a handsome man, not that she would allow herself to think such things. It was dangerous to think like that. She would not go near a man of his standing. “And you honour him by doing so,” She nodded at him, they were alone on the battlements. Something rare for her. “No. It is nice... to have a friend.”

“You sell yourself short, your grace. You do better than you give yourself credit for. If you do not mind me saying. Even your kindness in return to mine gives you such merit as a princess and as a human being,” he smiled gently. “I tend to speak my mind. Maybe it is a blessing… or destined to get me into trouble. Either way… I have a voice and ears, if you do not mind conversing with me.”
She swallowed, her words caught for a moment. She looked back out over the field, the mist was starting to fade now the morning was moving on. “My father saw something in you... he chose wisely.” She nodded, with a gracious smile. She had never been very good with compliments, usually she would just try to charm her way back to talk about the other person and what they wanted. “Oh, it will surely get you in trouble. But not with me.”

“You want to try and that is what matters, your grace.” He looked back at her, nodding lightly. “I am sorry… if I overstep. I do not mean to.”
“I do my best, i don’t think it is enough always. But you are kind in saying so. You... are so kind to me.” She half laughed, but it was soft, gentler then her usual sarcastic tone. “No, i invite you to do so. It is more that I am aware of my situation, that it is much more fortunate then others. It doesn’t seem right to complain.”Â

Elias smiled, hoping his company could be of some comfort to her. “Because of your name and how you continue his work,” he said gently. “I am sorry I cannot understand your situation. But I will continue to be a good listener if you need so.”
She listened to him, unsure why his words meant so much to her. It helped her. “I want to, and i will try to.” She looked at him, blinking for a few seconds. She was the princess, there was so much she couldn’t share... she couldn’t have people doubt her. “You have proven to be good at that... There is so much i cannot say. I still cannot say. I must be strong.”Â

His dark eyes remained firmly on her, as wrong as it should’ve been, but he didn’t look away. “I never expect anything, though it is greatly appreciated,” he gave a small nod of his head. “You can only try your best, do what you see fit. People will follow. Though I am sure you know better than I.”
Evan knew she should look away but she found herself almost relaxed talking to the knight, forgetting her position. “Why should people follow me? Because of my father’s name?” She shrugged her shoulders. “I have decisions to make that... in a few weeks when i take a husband I may not even have a say in.”

He rested his hands lazily against his belt, glancing to her then back across the fields. “Thank you, you have shown me great kindness, I return that with my loyalty.” He smiled, his face showing a slight surprise when she remembered his name. “No, to be both human and practical shows great strength. You did.”
She kept her eyes on him, aware there was no one around but ready to move if someone should stumble upon them. “Then i shall continue to show you kindness Ser, you deserve nothing less in exchange for that.” She smiled gently, glad to see the change in his face. “I just hope that assists me in my choices to come. Thank you.”Â

He was rambling, he knew very little about politics and he knew she knew that… though he tried all the same. He liked her. “Just saying what I think, your grace,” he nodded, leaning his weight slightly. “I and the other men, I am sure will do anything you need of us. The festival will be safe for all who attend,” he smiled slightly, though he noted her body language. “I will do my duty for you.” She looked back at him and he kept her gaze. “It takes nothing to show kindness. You have earned mine. I do not mind.”
She turned, leaning on the wall still. Watching him talk. She didn’t show her amusement, not wanting to offend him. She smiled gently “You are kind, I am lucky to have such men serving my family. We rely on you.” She nodded slowly, feeling the breeze in her hair. “Thank you.. Elias.” She added, showing she remembered him. “Many would say it is weakness. I.. am glad i could do that from a shopping trip.”
