Two-Spirit People

Native Americans have a centuries old tradition of accepting people identified as two-spirit (meaning that they self identify with both male and female characteristics.) In the Zuni culture all children were called “cha’le”, meaning child; the distinction between boy or girl wasn’t made until after the age of 5. Some communities had a two-spirit tradition where the pubescent child was allowed to choose between a basket and bow. A male-spirited child would choose a bow and a female-spirit child would choose a basket; this would determine how they would live out the rest of their adult lives.

The Native Americans were not as interested in a person’s physical presence as they were in their spiritual presence. Families with two-spirit members were considered blessed since that member could do the work of either sex. Male bodied two-spirits were considered deeply spiritual and often became respected healers.Female bodied two-spirits would become warriors or hunters.

Feminine men were partnered with masculine men; this maintained the spiritual and sexual balance as well as dividing the work load in the family. Butch women were partnered with feminine women for exactly the same reason. The partners of two-spirits were always tribe members who were not two-spirit, yet the partner was never considered homosexual. None of these married couples were considered homosexual, a concept that did not exist in the Native American’s view of infinite spiritual and gender roles. Two-spirit couples would adopt the tribe’s orphaned children and create their own families, families that were consider completely normal. 

When the Europeans arrived, they exerted all of their influence to turn the tribes against the two-spirits. They created the term “berdache” which meant prostitute, but with a homosexual connotation as a way to denigrate the two-spirits. The European’s point of view won out over time and the two-spirits were unfortunately forced to conform to the gender roles assigned them at birth. There were no more same sex marriages and a long tradition of acceptance was lost.

The Native Americans started to reclaim their cultural pride in the 1960s, coinciding with the rise of the Gay Pride movement, and respect for two-gendered people became a part of this movement. Since the 1990s Native Americans have rejected the offensive term “berdache” and replaced it with the more appropriately descriptive term: “two-spirit”.

Basic Succulent Care

This is how I personally care for my succulents and is a vague list. If you want something more specific, feel free to send an ask/message and I’ll likely reply.

🌵 I keep them either in part/full sun. Mine are right by a west-facing window.

🌵 Water a few times a week but not every day. They don’t need it and I actually killed one by overwatering a few years back. Cacti retain more water and can be watered less than succulents.

🌵 Use cactus soil. If it is unavailable for whatever reason, you can mix sand with regular soil and it should work, too.

🌵 If the pot you use doesn’t drain or is large, put rocks in the bottom, it helps drain and saves on soil.

Let’s Talk Litha!: Celebrating the Summer Solstice

June 21st marks this year’s Summer Solstice - the Sabbat known as Litha (or Midsummer)! If you celebrate the Wheel of the Year, Litha is one of the key points in the calendar: The summer solstice marks the Sun’s peak of power, and also marks the longest day in the year!

Litha, or, The Summer Solstice

Litha marks the longest day of the calendar year - the Summer Solstice - and is positioned at the bottom, Southernmost quarter point in the Wheel of Year. Traditionally, this is a great time to commune and connect with the Sun, do solar magic, and use the Sun’s peak power to spellcast, charge, and cleanse.

Colors: Red, orange, and other fiery, bold tones

Incense & Scents: Dragon’s blood, orange, musks (personal correspondences here - use your own for max results!)

Altar Setup: Find stones and crystals that have washed up on the summer shore, local flowers, seasonal fruits, and plenty of candles. A bonfire is traditional (a red candle is practical!)

The Litha Feast: What would a Sabbat be without a feast? Litha is a perfect time to eat outdoors (if possible!). Traditional foods include herbed breads and pastries (baked!), desserts and dishes with summer fruits (try berries, stone fruits, or citrus, depending on what’s local to you!), cold cooked poultry for our omnivore witches, and flower or berry wines. More modern foods for Litha could include potato salads, dishes made with lavender or sorrel, peppery foods, or dandelion greens.

Litha Traditions:

Light a bonfire and jump over it (if it’s small enough!) to cleanse yourself of past ills.

Stay up on Midsummer Eve to wait for the rising sun.

Dispose of old amulets in the Litha fire.

Work magic with stone circles.

Make speeches to Fortuna, the lady of Fortune (is my Hellenic Revivalism showing?).

Phone past friends and invite them over.

Honor the Oak tree by paying one a visit in your local neighborhood.

Lead the way to your Litha celebration with a torchlit procession (or lantern or sparkler-lit, as it were!).

Magic for Litha: Healing, purification, cleansing, fire, protection, rebirth, power, sun magic, magic with stones and crystals, reaffirmations, and oaths.

Know What You Have Done

This is neither a curse, nor a hex, as it does not return the pain caused (though it can easily be reformatted to do so), but simply makes the aggressor aware of it. More than that, it is to force them to understand the pain caused. Do not be wary of its simplicity, for its effects are tried and true.

Gather

A large bowl – the darker in color the better **

Water **

(Optional, though highly recommended): a personal affect of your aggressor)

(Optional: a Candle, black or white)

** Alternately, you can replace the bowl and water for a mirror or other scrying surface of your choosing

Instructions

Take with you your items to a dark room. Light the candle (or another dull light source) and pour your water into the bowl. The goal is to arrange it so that you cannot see through the water, but can only see the reflection on its surface.

When you have found the perfect lighting, take the personal affect in your left hand and “find” them in the water. You want to use the affect to attune to their spirit/energy so that you can “see” them. Keep working until you have a definitive link. You will know it when you have it.

Once the link has been made, using your right hand, dip your fingers into the water (hence why the bowl of water is preferred)  – this represents their subconsciousness. Bring forth the incident in which you were wrong and “place alongside” it, your own pain. Not in such a way as to inflict the pain, but to make them aware of your own. If you find it easier, feel free to speak what they have done aloud and the results of their actions. “This is what you have done.”

When you have said your peace and shown them what they need to see, break the link by flicking the water from your fingers onto the surface and releasing the personal affect from your hand. Pour out the water wherever convenient and do with the personal affect whatever you feel is appropriate. There is no need to destroy or get rid of it – in fact, you may wish to hold onto it for any further work.

📖writing + witchcraft📖

writing has always been a passion of mine, and there’s nothing i love more than combining personal hobbies with witchcraft! there’s so many ways you can use writing to boost your craft, or use your craft to boost your writing; these are the ways i personally do!

honour what’s special in your craft. if you’re theistic, dedicate a piece of writing to them. if you’re not, but you want to honour something else, you could write about the earth, or the stars, or absolutely anything. this would make a great grimoire or b.o.s entry!

learn to use automatic writing. this is a cool kind of divination that allows your subconscious/higher self, or spirits around you to control what you write. i’ve tried this a few times and it’s quite fun, but i’ve always wanted to try using it as inspiration for creative writing! here is a much better post on it by @satinsouled.

start journaling. journaling is a great way to clear your mind and encourage creativity, but it can be really useful in witchcraft too! write about your witchy experiences however you want to, so you have reference points to come back to later

draw inspiration from your craft. similar to the previous point, if you’ve had an interesting experience that you’d like to write about, why not turn it into a poem or short story? if you worship deities, write a story about them. create your own world of witchiness that stems from your personal experiences - your writing will always be unique and interesting because no one else will have had your experiences!

use tarot cards and readings as inspiration. instead of reading tarot like you normally would, write prose or poetry inspired by it to note down your reading. i think the best example by far is @tarotprose, one of my favourite blogs on tumblr and actually my inspiration to start combining witchcraft and poetry.

souped-up spellwork. its easy to work spells you find online, word-for-word, because you think that’s how it’s ‘meant’ to be done. there are some people who say their way is the ‘only’ way, but that’s a toxic way of thinking. use poetry and creative writing to create your own, personalised chants, invocations and spells! your words will have more power for you than anyone else’s, and you’ll probably find your spells will work much better if you put your own personal touch into them.

✨ Types of Soulmates ✨

Hi everyone! When doing love readings for people, I tend to always mention the word ‘soulmate’ which is why I thought I’d actually make a post about the topic. The term can be a bit confusing due to the various connotations that it’s accumulated over time. Most people imagine that meeting their soulmate will unfold like a fairytale and instantly lead to happily ever after! But this isn’t always the case! You’ll meet several different soulmates in your lifetime, all of them serving different purposes. Soooo let’s get into this shit! (starting in no particular order!)

1. Platonic Soulmate: The platonic soulmate will manifest as your best friend and partner in crime! There’s a sense of effortlessness when you two meet. There’s no hesitation and you feel a sense of ease when you’re around. Your platonic soulmate is the person you know was destined to be your Maid of Honor or Best Man haha. The platonic soulmate is usually the simplest out of all the connections as they exist in your path to make life more enjoyable. Some people may mistake a platonic soulmate for a romantic/companion soulmate but they’ll usually both realize that they’re better off as friends. Someone who is asexual or aromantic will likely stay with their platonic soulmate as they don’t feel the need to connect with anyone else. This can be extremely fulfilling! 

2. Soul Family: Ahhhh soul families are a total fucking blessing! Members of a soul family all come from the same branch of consciousness and have similar life paths. Soul families can be literally anyone who has the same interests, beliefs, mindset, and energetic vibration as you! The key aspect of a soul family is that our souls were created in the same dimension/planet and we always incarnate together. Our soul family has travelled the same paths and have had to learn the same lessons. All members of a soul family are working towards the same mission. I say they’re a blessing because I find it extremely comforting to know that you have other people who feel and think in the same way that you do! Your actual family may be a part of your soul family but not always. There are definitely members of your soul family who you may not actually ever meet. Some soul groups have 2,000 people while others have 20. It simply depends on your mission! 

3. Past Life Soulmate: Our past life soulmate(s) are usually romantic and they’re someone who is returning from a past life. When you feel as though you instantly recognize someone, this is a clear sign that they’re a past life connection. Your past life soulmate can reincarnate with you every life time or only occasionally. Either way, this person is usually in your life to remind you of something you’ve forgotten about your own soul. They subconsciously bring back information from a past life in order to deepen your spirituality. This could be a long term or short term relationship! Past life soulmates are a part of your soul family!

4. Karmic Soulmates: Ohhh the lovely karmics… Karmic Soulmates are like fucked up past life soulmates. They’re from your past life but they show up in this life because there’s an unlearned lesson or unsettled business between you two. This karmic imbalance desperately needs to be resolved before you can progress. To be fair, karmics don’t always have to be horrible! They serve a very important purpose though. I’d even go as far as to say that they’re the most necessary. They present challenges and conflicts in order to make you stronger. Your first heartbreaks are usually a result of karmic relationships. They’re kind of like stepping stones to your twin flame or romantic soulmate! Karmics are almost always temporary and can be friends, family, or lovers.

5. Healing Soulmate: Healing soulmates usually emerge after a karmic relationship ends. Or after a defeating period in your life. They can come in the form of a friend, a parent, a teacher, a lover, or even a stranger. They offer you comfort and help set you back on your path. Healing soulmates are usually temporary as they mostly exist in our lives for a specific issues. Some healing soulmates may stick around and assist you with future conflict as well, though! 

6. New Soul: This one is pretty straight forward! Not everyone you meet will be from a past life. A new soul is someone we’ve never had contact with. They usually show upwhen we’ve completed all karmic trials or, for whatever reason, have rejected the romantic soulmate/twin flame partner. This person will spark intrigue, curiosity, and fascination in you. We’ll crave a connection with this person but things usually happen slower with a new soul because of the unfamiliarity. Most karmic relationships start off as a new soul that wasn’t originally in our Soul Contract. Which can be vv exciting! 

7. Romantic/Companion Soulmate:  Your romantic soulmate is often described as ‘The One’! They’re your perfect match in this lifetime and the person that your higher self decided to unite with. Of course, you can always stray from your soul contract but most people don’t! The romantic soulmate will offer you so much joy, happiness, and emotional depth. They’re the person you’re likely to marry and will help to move you along your path with an open heart. When we unite with a companion soulmate, we experience unconditional love and bliss. Every relationship will still have it’s problems but you’ll be able to work through these things in harmony. The romantic soulmate can be a new soul or past life connection!

8. The Twin Flame: Not everyone has a twin flame in this lifetime or a twin flame at all! But your twin flame is the perfect REFLECTION of you. You two are parts of the same consciousness. It’s still possible to be whole without your twin flame but, when you two come together, it creates something incredibly powerful.
