cw: child abuse, injury, physical abuse
There's a small girl walking around the streets of Gotham. Her face is bruised; her hair is brown and short. She's been walking for a while now and she's very tired. Clara doesn't like Gotham that much, it's different from Coast City and she misses home. She misses her mother too, despite it all.
Clara is hungry and exhausted, her father wouldn't let her into the house last night, so she's been wandering for a while. It's raining out and she can feel the water soaking into her jacket and shirt. She's cold now.
It all comes to a head though when she trips over a curb and falls down onto the sidewalk right near an alley. She hisses, looking down at her knees, they always tend to be bruised, but now her right knee is skinned and bleeding and she thinks she has glass imbedded in her left knee. She hates how dirty Gotham is, and she can't help the tears that spring to her eyes, but she tries to push it down and away.
The rain hasn't let up since the afternoon, and it's honestly....really annoying. It's not that Evan hates the rain, but it makes walking to the convenience store much more difficult. He had already stepped into a few puddles, and the feeling of his wet sneakers was really getting to him. Even if he didn't want to go home just yet, the pelting of the rain was really making him consider it.
The sound of someone tripping makes him look over as he passes by an alley, seeing a girl maybe his age or older on the ground. Normally, the best bet was to just ignore it all, sometimes people used others as bait to get mugged, but...
He bit his lip awkwardly, before walking over to the girl and holding his umbrella over her, shoes scuffing the pavement.
"Are you alright?"
It was probably okay, right? He's not a good fighter, but he can definitely run if anything bad happens.
Clara pauses when the rain stops pouring down on her head. She pauses, looking up before she hears the stranger speak. She whirls around.
Her face is a bit bruised, with an old cut that looks to be healing on her forehead. She wipes at the rain water on her face. She's a little relieved to see it's just another kid and not some stranger that could hurt her.
"Um...I'm alright. I just fell."
Clara says softly. Her knees are bleeding now, and she frowns a little to herself at the sight of the blood. She's exhausted and she wishes she could just sleep, but her father told her not to come home and he didn't let her in the morning and she got lost trying to find the middle school.
So now she's here, fairly far into the evening, having walked around the city seemingly all day.
He shuffles in place a bit, before offering a hand up, eyes quickly darting around as if assessing for any other people.
"That's a lot of blood, there's a convenience store down the road."
It is a lot of blood, especially on someone else. As much as he wandered Gotham alone, he never really saw stuff like this up close.
The sky slowly darkens, and Evan feels uneasy being outside while it's raining. Better to just wait it out at a convenience store where someone will at least have a gun. And...
...It's a bit lonely to make the walk himself.
"I'm going there, so I could take you, if you want...?"
Clara hesitantly takes the boys hand, standing. She's very much soaked from the rain, and she has to push her bangs a little so they're not plastered to her face as much.
She pauses at the offer. She checks her pockets briefly before shrugging while staring down at her feet. Her clothes are a little raggedy, but it's hard to tell with all the rain water.
"Um...it's- I don't have any money."
Clara whispers. She doesn't really have any of her things on her, considering she didn't have time to grab her backpack or anything. Maybe it's good she couldn't find the school because she's not sure her teachers would be happy with her lack of supplies.
Evan makes a face, grimacing a bit before realizing how that comes across and quickly smoothing it over into neutrality again. He lets out a breath through his teeth, before turning away and quickly opening a raggy pouch, counting out the change he had.
Five....Seven...Ten. He really needs to accept doing essays instead of just homework. Closing the pouch and pocketing it again, he turns back to the girl.
"I'll pay." He could get by without a snack today. Hopefully his parents won't be back when he gets home, then he can snag something from the fridge.
"Oh um...okay, if you're sure. I can try to pay you back when I...when I get back home."
Or if her Dad even lets her back home. Clara's only been messing things up since they got to Gotham, and he always complains that she's gonna be the reason he loses his job and they end up homeless. She hopes the bandaids aren't too much money, and that she can steal it without him noticing.
"I'm Clara...Whats...your name?"
She quietly asks the boy, moving to wrap her arms around herself. She doesn't know if he wants to be her friend or not...but she likes to at least be polite and friendly, even when she looks like a wreck and is taking his money.
"Evan." He replies, gesturing for her to come along before walking. She seems harmless enough, and it's not like anyone can do anything with a first name.
"I'm ten. I go to the school over there."
He points in the general direction of his school, away from where the two are walking to. Mentally, he tries to weigh the pros and cons of maybe stealing a candy bar, or two. He's not normally the type, but money has been tight recently, and his parents might be too upset to make him anything.
Not the type to strike conversation, he lapses into silence.
"Oh...I'm 12...I'm in the middle school by my house but I...I don't know the city very well. We moved recently."
She responds hesitantly, she stares at her feet as they walk, seeming nervous and shy maybe. Clara's mostly the quiet type if she can help it, keeping to herself and keeping out of everyone else's business. If she can help it, Clara likes to keep the attention away from herself. If she blends in with the surroundings she can't bother anyone.
Clara pulls at her sleeves a little, fidgeting with them. Coast City was much easier to navigate than Gotham, she swears theres nooks and crannies in this city everywhere. She knows the place is dangerous at least, but Clara isn't sure if there's a place or city that isn't dangerous. Green Lantern fights, though not as common, did happen a lot.
Evan nods, not surprised by her statement. It's not quite out of the blue, most Gotham kids weren't as quick to trust anyone, even other kids, especially at this hour.
"That makes sense. I'd recommend going to one of the public libraries, then. They're the safest place to camp out, shelters and kitchens fill up quicker and fights are more likely to happen there."
He stops in front of a 7-Eleven, the sign flickering just-so that it reads '7 El', instead. The glass doors let light flood onto the darker street, casting light and shadow over the two children, rain still pouring down. He gestures flatly for Clara to go first, looking behind him as if someone would pop out to attack at any moment.
Clara pauses, frowning at that and hesitating.
"I'm...I'm not homeless- I- I live with my Dad. I just...got lost. Wasn't supposed to sleep at home last night, and he- he forgot. But that's okay, he works late, he was probably resting."
Clara says with a small shrug. She understands that it's hard to take care of her as well as working two low paying jobs. Clara knows she's difficult. Even her mother thought so when she was alive.
She walks inside, trying to wipe her sneakers on the mat by the front, though considering how wet she is by now it's not helping. She brushes her bangs out of her face, then looks back at Evan briefly. She's not really sure what to get since it's not her money.
Evan blinks, wrong-footed. Had he assumed wrong? Based on the fact she was just wandering alone, he thought that Clara was like him, camping out in the city and delaying going home as much as possible. That's...really embarrassing, actually.
Flustered, all he does is give a short nod, before stepping past her to enter. He grabs a pack of bandaids ('The colorful ones are too expensive, just get the 16 pack one, you can half it and keep the rest later.'), and a small bag of chips, deftly shoving a few pieces of candy up his sleeve.
He pays for the bandages and chips, opening the pack and counting out exactly as many as Clara needed. Evan pauses, before adding two more. He holds them out to her.
Clara just stands by him, not speaking and mostly staring down at her banged up shoes. She doesn't want to bring any attention to herself really, she's used to trying to blend in and usually being able to. She's not sure why Evan even stopped to begin with, really.
Clara takes the bandages, glancing up at him and giving him a weak smile before moving to sit and put the bandages over the wounds, there's some glass in one of her knees so she just picks it out and brushes her knee off a little. It's not exactly the best way, but she doesn't have much and it'll be okay for now.
She bandages her knees and wipes at her face a little.
"Thank you...I can- pay you back for them at some point, if- if I see you again."
Clara says, standing again and stuffing the trash into her pocket to deal with later.
Evan tries to grin, but he sort of just looks like he's baring his teeth awkwardly. He's not used to talking to many people, much less being friendly.
"It's okay. Gotham's a big place. Just...clean the wounds when you get home."
He shuffles, nodding. Was that nice enough? Evan's not too sure how to approach this. Clara seems nice enough, but he doubts he'll be able to see her again.
Clara nods a bit, fiddling with her fingers and not really making eye contact. She's always found eye contact scary and hard to do, but her father always gets upset with her.
"Um...okay. Do you- do you know where Park Row is? I- I live near there but I don't know where we... are..."
She says a bit hesitantly, looking around and sighing. She's not used to being lost so often but Gotham is so different than Coast City and there's so many dark corners and alleyways everywhere. Clara just wants to get home.
Evan brightens up. If there's anything he knows how to do, it's navigate the city. That was less confusing than trying to do weird feeling stuff.
"Oh- yeah, it's near enough. Take a right from here and just walk until the third right."
He points at the direction to go to, before handing over his umbrella. It's still raining, after all.

Nightingale sat on a high rooftop, feet swinging leisurely—dangerously—off the ledge. Her back curved over her breathes as her body formed barely a shadow on the Gotham streets down below.
It was clear from her posture that she was distressed. Tired, perhaps. A dagger twirled in her hands, as if it were just a motion she did without even noticing.

Evan dropped down, from god-knows-where. Feet padding noiselessly against the ground, he surveyed the person. They weren't anywhere in his memory, he thinks... hard as he tries to search, he comes up blank.
His mouth opens, and then closes. What can anyone say in this situation?
Awkwardly, he comes to sit near the other person, just a bit away
Nightingale looked at the figure beside her. She looked perplexed. "Evan? That you? Been a while since I last saw you, man."
He paused, a little confused. No one has ever mentioned her before, but...
Evan supposes it's just another thing that fell through.
"I...." He starts, trying to search for the words. "Are... you... alright?"
"I'm... Okay, i guess. My mother locked up my window and I can't open the door without letting her know I was out, so I'm shut out of my apartment til the morning."
She turns to Evan, and takes a closer look at him, "You don't... know me, do you?"
Evan nodded along. "That doesn't sound good. You don't have a place to stay?"
He pauses, at her next words. He knows that he looks different, he can tell when people he doesn't remember look at him, at his scars. It's...weird. But. He does know that the more he stays around them, the more he remembers caring for them, and...even if he doesn't know this person, he knows he wants her to be safe.
"...I don't. I lost my memories."
"Would it be stupid of me to ask you if you remember how?" Nightingale said, easily dodging the question.
The question makes him look out to Gotham, but his mouth downturns a little at the way they dodged the question.
"...How about you answer mine, and I could answer yours?"
Nightingale sighs. No way to get out of this one, huh?
"I'll stay wherever, maybe I'll pull an all nighter patrolling!"
They nudge Evan with their arm, "crime doesn't stop when the bats go back, now, does it?"
Evan nods, but fiddles with his fingers.
"Maybe...Beau and Artem could help you?" He words it like an offering, fumbling over the words without giving them titles.
"Or- I can join you?"
Nightingale's eyes look soft, as if she were smiling under the mask.
"Well I wouldn't mind the company. So, what've you been upto?"
He tilts his head, fidgeting a little. It's a bad habit he's picked up since he left, but he doesn't find it in him to stop.
"I... They say I got kidnapped, or gifted, or--" He goes quiet, thinking. "I was under service to a presence, for a while."
Evan tilts his head, looking away awkwardly. "And you? I don't really know how we know each other."
Nightingale reels back as she hears what Evan says, "What the actual fuck????"
"well...i once found your 13 year old self roaming the streets unarmed so i basically..." She chuckled. "Adopted you. Yeah."
Evan smiles weakly. "That sounds nice. I think we got along well." He doesn't know, but...maybe it's okay to pretend.
He shifts, moving to get back from the ledge and looking at Nightingale in hopes that she will, too.
"We did." Nightingale took evan's cue and followed him away from the ledge.
"you'd always try to annoy me by doing the opposite of wht I'd tell you, and I'd always end up laughing instead of scolding you," her laugh filled the air with nostalgic melancholy.
His smile grows, fulling out as he laughs a little along with her. "Really? That-- does sound like me, actually." Evan admits, looking out at the skyline.
"Maybe we could-- roam around? Like old times?" Evan suggests. Gotham was rarely friendly, but tonight was one of the nights where it felt welcoming.
