#WCW: Abra & her self-directed video “Pull Up”

Who knew Abra and I would have more in common than I thought? I have done a variation of risky business myself with friends but not to the exact extent that she does in this video. "Pull Up” is an extremely relatable video for women who love a bit of a thrill. This track is off of her latest EP, Princess. 

You’ll be roaming the streets with her and her potentially new-found friends in the hoods of Bushwick and Harlem. The slight bounce in the beat makes you want to grab a vespa or motorcycle and run the streets with your homies. We’re getting into trouble with her. What fun. Watch the visuals below for some bad assery and grills peeking right at you.

When your friends send you music to vibe to, how can you not? Hailing from Boston, Philly G and our West coast producer D Vibes gives us some emotional healing and some Mos Def/ Yasiin Bey auras to soothe our souls. This track features Toussaint. They are a part of Viva La Hop, which infuses hip-hop with some jazz and funk. They have been traveling with their talents and performing at multiple festivals throughout the nation. Their most recent appearance was at The Freedom Rally in Boston! Let me tell you how much I enjoy these tunes! The reggae undertone with Philly G telling us how he can’t sleep over this woman, how he was selfish and how he acquired some knowledge from this relationship. Relationships are work and Philly G speaks from his perspective. This raw portrayal from this lyricist is much needed! Get funky with D Vibes’ production and share with friends.

Policing the Police? Who Does That?

What a rhetorical question I ask. This inquiry is conjured up from KAMAU’s latest visuals “PohLease.” It showcases police brutality in a very raw depiction. Although the tempo of the production is a bit cheerful and soulful we still feel the endangerment that black men, women, children and the black queer community feel on a daily basis. We don't ever like to think that these circumstances could happen to one of us, however being created with darker pigment causes an unfortunate reaction of fear and malice. What powerful visuals we have here. Watch below. 

There isn’t much left to be said. How can we create change and emanate justice beyond the music we create, beyond the protests, beyond what we differentiate as right and wrong? Like KAMAU urgently raps, “This is a problem.” Overall, we should all be concerned for each other’s humanity and well-being. I think we are all frustrated and buried six-feet-under with news of injustice, especially towards every marginalized group ranging from immigrants, refugees, women, the queer community and people of color. Joyner Lucas: “I’m Sorry”

Worcester’s handmade lyricist and actor, Joyner Lucas, has stunned us again with profound imagery for his latest visuals for “I’m Sorry.” Have you ever experienced isolation and depression to the point of suicidal thoughts? Well, Lucas shows us an individual grappling with the decisions of attempting to wake to a new day or to throw in the towel to his life. A bit of Kendrick Lamar’s influence appears when it hits 2 minutes in this track. I feel as if this plot and song is important as we tend to drag on upon our lives with melancholic thoughts and blame others for being too frail when they take their lives. 

I enjoyed that Lucas and his director flipped the script as they make the victim seem “selfish” because he took his own life and wrote the reason as to why he took these steps. Perhaps, we smell a bit of guilt from Lucas as he felt like he wasn’t there for his friend. Either way, it is okay to have these discussions with your friends and family members. We never know what is going on in their lives and to uplift and love one another is the least we can do!

Vince Staples’ “Prima Donna” Visuals.

If you have ten minutes to spare, I suggest you gracefully squander them away on Vince Staples’ latest visuals for Prima Donna. Staples initially seems disinterested in the sultry dynamics of being in a tainted industry but, as time increases and he travels through a journey of hell, he becomes involuntarily engulfed in all of the tempestuous acts. 

Even as he tiptoes on the edge of committing illicit acts, he still remains true to his values. He believes that violence, promiscuity, materialism and poverty strikes his community with a heavy hand. The demonic battles that the impoverished African-American and Latino communities suffer is a reoccurring trend in his latest visuals, as seen in “Señorita.” Staples notes that he is always working to his cab driver and states that he needs a vacation, only to get sucked into an American Horror Story: Hotel nightmare. One major key that I must add and that I enjoyed thoroughly about this short film was the fact that he incorporates lyrics from Outkast’s “ATLiens” at 6 minutes and 19 seconds. All you hear is the distinguishable Andre 3K’s voice moving into motion:

We Are #WomenNotObjects

On my spare time, I research advertisements and the way the world perceives them. I especially love visual ads and marketing versus an image. So when I stumbled across this campaign that highlights women as being more than just your object to toy with, I smiled and proceeded to gaze into my screen. It was a serendipitous moment that aligned with my current issues. Type in Google “the objectification of women” and really consume what images are being doled out to us.  

These are powerful visuals accompanied with women who have strong statures. This video went viral and a principal at Badger & Winters wanted to raise awareness as to how women are always being subjected. Celebrities to other ad companies took note and hopped on the bandwagon with the hashtag #WomenNotObjects; some even veered away from the objectification of women in their advertising after viewing this viral short piece. Watch below and be mesmerized by the strength that these women resuscitate into us.
