“Huh. Okay, well, let’s see what I can offer. I mean, I think all of it is pretty fascinating but that’s hardly the case with everyone. Oh, here’s a fun fact; the human body actually contains enough carbon to produce graphite for around 9000 pencils. I think that’s pretty cool.”

I don’t get some guys, why they’re so sexist, the sad part is that I have met other guys like that” he knew there were a lot more guys like that in the world, which is the part that sucked, they think men are stronger than women and that they can do better field work, like they think cops should just be men, that firefighters should just be men, because women can’t handle those things “I don’t like guys like that”

“I don’t know why someone would think it’s okay to go ahead and say that. I mean, I do know. They’ve been conditioned to think it’s okay and even normal. It shouldn’t be like that,” Eveline sighed, shrugging briefly as she ran her fingers through her hair to give herself a moment to think. “You seem like a smart guy, though. Hell, most men I’ve met in my lifetime have been perfectly sensible and particularly offended by the fact that women might work in the STEM field.”

“There’s always a person that thinks they can do a better job or know more about something without the education required. Just because they Googled it.” He shook his head. It was infuriating to say the least whenever it happened. Thankfully there weren’t too many people that came up to him thinking they could play music better than he can. “God I hope that’s a joke. If it’s not I feel sorry for you having to be married to a person like that.”

Eveline snorted as her right hand travelled to rub the back of her neck. “Right. I didn’t realise skimming through a Wikipedia article was the same as getting an actual doctorate degree in a subject. But hey, I’ve been made aware it is indeed the very same thing.” Feeling just slightly less bitter, Eveline cracked a quick, half-arsed smile as she allowed her eyes to scan her surroundings. “That was a joke. As you might have gathered by the evidence I’ve offered so far, I am very good at chemistry and very bad at humour.”

It was suppose to be some game changing management style to open up fields of communication but it’s just created a platform for assholes to share their bullshit opinions without consequences. Don’t listen to them then, prove them wrong.”

“Oh, yes, I think I might have heard about that. The idea that everyone’s point of view is equally valid is absolutely ludicrous. A person who has never worked in a lab has no real right to tell me I can’t be as good as my male colleagues, no matter how removed from reality they might be. I don’t think it’s entirely possible to prove someone like that wrong. They’re stuck in their ways and foolish enough to think I give a shit about their uneducated opinions.”

“That’s a great question,” the blonde said with a playful grin. Half-turning, she looked at the selections for the day. “We’re got your usual suspects - Bud Light, Coors, Miller. Half off on those for the next two hours. Sam Adams, Blue Moon, Shock Top. If you’re feeling a little more local, we’ve got this one - realllly bitter, if you’re into that - Tavern Ale. Last but not least, out of Raleigh, i think - Sunday Punch. Sour. Remember those warhead candies? This is the beer version.” She offered, giving a soft, self-satisfied smile at her ability to actually name the selection. 

“Wow, that is very impressive.” Eveline hoped the statement hadn’t come out as too dry or sarcastic as she was genuinely impressed by the selection and the way the woman had managed to deliver the entire list. “I think I might try the really bitter one. I’m feeling adventurous today,” she spoke after a moment’s pause and nodded firmly. “Have you tried it yourself? I mean, I don’t expect you to tell me it’s dreadful or whatever as you work here. Probably against the code of business.”

I’m an ass and I say things out of line on the regular but usually I have something to back up my argument at least. That guy was just being an outright ass if you ask me. I’m sure you’re plenty good at your job.”

“I know I do all that. I’m well aware I can be a huge arsehole and downright insufferable at times but I wouldn’t just go up to someone and tell them they must subpar at their job simply due to their gender. Only a stone-cold wanker would do that. Yeah, cheers. I like to think I am.”

Despite all the clear shit that this year has presented us with there’s hot - I mean awesome and well-informed people like you sticking up for those that need it.” Andy said with a big smile, quite endeared by the woman before her. She respected anyone who could stand up for themselves and stick it to the world when shit went downhill. “It’s not that intense. It’s a lot more practical than theory so I work on clients a lot. But I ended up studying it because I had to choose a dumb subject to go alongside my soccer scholarship. So why not train in the area of life I love the most - physical fitness.” 

“I am absolutely convinced this entire year is just some cruel trick played on us by our evil overlords,” Eveline huffed and pulled a face of clear disgust as she briefly took a look back on the year’s events. It had been infuriating to say the least, but it had not had an effect on Eveline’s need and desire to at least try and fight the injustices of the world, trait she’d inherited from her parents. “That sounds sensible. I mean, you’re already familiar and comfortable with the world of soccer. I’m sure you will be excellent at your job once you graduate.”

“Was this on a blind date or at the work place?” If it had been a date, then he could see why she’d be annoyed. Nobody wants to hear your views on things like that right off the bat. Of course Wyatt was out of touch on the whole dating thing. So maybe things had changed since he last had a date. If it was at the work place then the guy was an asshole. “Also, that guy, is a moron clearly.”

“Neither, really. I was out for drinks with some colleagues and this man invited himself over to our table or whatever. He asked what we did for living and clearly did not approve. Or at least thought he could do a much better job without any sort of education or knowledge of the field,” Eveline sighed with a theatrical roll of her eyes as she relived the experience. “Needless to say, we’re getting married.”

I know a lot of people think white chocolate is really sweet but not all the time. Yes, for me it is. “We all do that from time to time. I like to think myself as great company for, well, myself,” Eveline joked, a brief smile spreading across her face and reaching her eyes just for few seconds. “I was never a big fan. I generally love chocolate but mostly the much darker kind. Preferably with sea salt. Anyway, I can’t really judge you for liking a drink I’ve never tried. That’d be a bit daft,” she admitted and rolled her eyes before taking one final look at the drink in question. “Certainly looks appealing.”

“I mean, I am. I’ve been kickboxing professionally for a few years. And have won many matches. And well, I started just kickboxing when I was eight. Because I was too active, my father told me. And then later when I was fourteen I discovered a new gym opening up that taught Muay Thai. And for my sixteenth birthday I went to Brazil with my father to learn the basics of Jiu-Jitsu and when I got back I found a gym not too far away that teaches it. And this past year I’ve been learning a lot about wrestling at the gym I learned to kickbox. So, you just need to know where to look.“

“That all sounds very intense and like a lot of really hard work. I can appreciate the hours that must go into training for something that involves so many different sort of fighting styles or whatever you may call them. Is it something you always wanted to do or felt like pursuing? I mean, it must be one of those things where people will just laugh at you when you tell them what you want.”

“I just think they’re gross looking, but I feel like you might run if you see one near you though.” There was no judgement about the other’s hatred towards spiders, she feels the same way about lizards but it was kind of amusing to listen at how intensely she felt about them. “Charming,” Genesis said in regards to the comment about her name, a grateful smile on her lips. What is it with women in Wilmington? They’re either all gay or too hot to be gay. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Eveline. What do you do for a living, if you don’t mind me asking?” 

Eveline shuddered, unwilling to drag out a discussion regarding a species she both loathed and sort of feared. Admittedly, she would never admit to being scared of tiny insects, not when she rationally knew a fear like that didn’t really make sense. “Oh, yes, that’s me. Charming,” she echoed the other woman without a change in the tone of her voice, almost as if to prove a point. “Likewise. No, I don’t mind at all. God knows I love talking about my job. Clinical chemistry. So, essentially the analysis of bodily fluids for diagnostic purposes.” Like almost every single time Eveline was given a chance to discuss her job, the look on her face shifted just slightly as her sharp, angular features seemed to soften with genuine enthusiasm. “And yourself?”

“God, I don’t want to go over notes anymore. Not this close to a holiday.” Teagan sort of whined, laying yet another open folder in front of her on the small coffee shop table. “Save me?”

“Hmm. Sounds like a tough situation,” Eveline pondered, her eyes briefly scanning the stack of papers as she sat down, careful not to move any of the objects on the table. “How would one go about saving you from this adversity?”

“I have absolutely no idea what that is because the only way I got to college was my twin brother but I did get the sexiest part and I say you should have given him a good kick in his soft spot and told him men like that weren’t suited for the 21st century.” Cole nodded with a grin.

“STEM? It’s the acronym used for the academic disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Essentially what you would call hard sciences, I guess. Anyway, I should have done that. However, I was in a bar and surrounded by colleagues. I don’t think they would’ve appreciated me putting on a proper show. It’s a shame, really.”
