Megan round the corner with her latte in hand. Bumping into someone her attention was drawn between them and overhead. Her eyes darted to the holiday plant. The tradition behind it was lost on few. Stuck under the mistletoe with her other, she gave an awkward laugh. âUhâŠsorry about that? Um, happy holidays,â she murmured, making no actual move one way or the other.Â
Carter rounded the bend and bumped into a blonde lady, apologizing quickly for having his face buried in his phone and not paying attention. He lifted a brow as he looked up and spotted the mistletoe. âMistletoe huh? I wonder how many people have actually kissed under this thing this year.â He asked, chuckling at the idea.â
Alinaâs fraternal boys were only home from school that day because they had a dentist appointment - so they were just taking a walk after lunch, along with her eleven month old girl. Who was now crying, because she lost her stuffed animal, probably forgotten in the diner. She was trying to calm the girl down as best she could, and keep her boys from goofing off too much and getting hurt or knocking into somebody. She spoke in Russian to the child, wanting to calm her down before they went looking for the stuffed dog - the stuffed dog that some stranger was now holding out to the girl; Katerina grabbed for it, hugging it really tightly as Alina wiped the childâs face of tears and snot quickly, looking up at the stranger from her crouched position. âThanks.â
Carter had been sitting at the table next to the family in the diner. When he looked up and saw theyâd left and left a small toy behind heâd told the waitress, not to his surprise the waitress really didnât seem that interested in going that extra mile to help out. Throwing down far more money than was due he got up, grabbed the stuffed dog and made a dash out into the street to try and track them down. If it wasnât for the crying he wouldnât even know where to look first and would have been out there for a while looking for them. âItâs no problem. I see enough kids lose it everyday over lost toys and animals, if I can save a kid from a meltdown and a parent from having to listen to them than itâs my good deed for the day,â he said with a soft chuckle.
The young lawyer sat on the edge of a bench, sunglasses on his face and a book in his hands. There was something about reading in a park (where all he could hear was just park noises instead of the siren of the constant havoc in New York City) that was purely relaxing. So far, his few weeks here have been such a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of the life of the city. It was something he could see settling down into his future, if his parents let him. With the way his parents were pestering him, it sounds like he might be stuck in the city forever. He sighed dramatically, taking off his sunglasses to wipe the sleep from his eyes. He moved to get up only to bump into someone. âOh sorry, my bad,â Beckett replied, finally looking up to see who the person was. âWait, have I seen you somewhere? You look really familiar. Iâm from the city so you might be the person I used to commute with everyday.â
As usual Carter was running late for a meeting, he could hardly ever make it anywhere on time when he was coming off of the night shift. He wasnât sure why he even bothered trying to make plans before 3pm on his days off. He was hurrying through the park on a  âshort cutâ when he felt someone bump into him. He hadnât seen seen someone on the beach so to say he was caught off guard was an understatement. âShit, sorry, man!â he said, hardly even looking up. It wasnât until the other man said, Wait, that he turned around. Carter squinted at him, cocking his head a bit as he tried to place him. âYou do look familiar... you from New York or Durham?â
missaudreygrey:
âOh my. I may have to come crash that some time; it seems like a real wild group of people you got there.â She chuckled once more. âI will bring the sugar-free candy and maybe a meatloaf. Who knows? I may get really crazy and bring some cookies.â Audrey folded her arms across her chest with a smug look on her face. âYeah.. youâre definitely right. AbsolutelyâŠâ She checked her own phone to see if anyone needed her; unfortunately, the screen was blank. Unusualâ but she didnât mind it. âYouâll have to model it for them, Iâm sure. And what makes you so certain that I want to spend time with you?âÂ
âJust be careful, once they start passing around the caramels that they sneak in they all get a little wild. If you find Connie and tell her Carter sent you sheâll hook you up with the good stuff, not that no name crap that Deloris has. I think youâd win them all over with the sugar free candy and some short bread. Itâs kind of like crack for old ladies.â Carter shook his head in embarrassment, it was a little sad that he knew all of this stuff. He just gave her another shrug, âI canât help it... I was born this way. Better get used to it, if you end up in the ER this itâll be what youâre looking at while before, after and depending on how bad it is maybe even while Iâm fixing you up.â Carter looked around and then back at her. âI donât see anyone else around here thatâd be more fun to hang around with. And by the looks of your phone no ones waiting around for your either. But hey, if youâd rather be else where go ahead.â Carter took a step back, gesturing in the direction sheâd been heading when he ran into her.
missaudreygrey:
âOh, please⊠they will have plenty of time to do both.â She chuckled. âThey finish those things so fast; I donât know how they manage to do it.â A scoff left her lips as she spoke again. âThat look.. that smirky thing youâve been doing this whole time.â She grinned, eyeing his phone. âIs it time for you to save the world yet? I would hate to deprive you from doing your job.â
âHey, they have a lot to do. Floor three is real social, they wheel around and visit other people, have group crossword parties... theyâre a real riot.â He chose to leave out the fact that they also hit on absolutely every male nurse and doctor that came on the floor. Carter just nodded and then stroked his chin, âItâs a disorder... you know a ridiculously good looking disorder that results in permanent shit-eating grin to be plastered on my face. Better get used to it,â he gave an innocent little shrug. âMy shift doesnât start for another couple of hours. Theyâre just asking to schedule a consult for when I get there. Ive still got some time for you before I have to go save people and try on my new knitwear.âÂ
missaudreygrey:
âDamn.. maybe you can try to get me on their good side when they visit you weekly for their check ups.â She shrugged as he nudged her, shooting him a playful look. âWhat is that look you always have on your face?â She raised an eyebrow. She could tell when someone was flirting with her, and this was definitely one of those times. âUm.. Iâm good, thanks. I can just stop by or arrive by ambulance. I donât think Iâll need your number for all of that.â She fired back at him with a smile evident on her lips.
âI can try but if theyâre knitting your stuff they wonât have time to finish up my stocking!â He had so many knitted goodies from the old ladies recovering from surgery.  They were bored and usually felt like they owed him for saving their life or making them more comfortable. âWhat look?. ... This is just how my face is?â he raised his brow, confused as to where she was going with this. Carter huffed, why did every blonde in his life have to be so damn sassy? He couldnât just shamelessly flirt anymore without getting reamed out for it. âSuit yourself. I guess Iâll see you when you get hit by that car than.â He pulled out his phone to check to his messages, seeing if the hospital had needed him.
missaudreygrey:
âI think I may need a few of those.. I think I have one hat, and hell, maybe I donât even have gloves.â She ran her fingers through her hair. âI should probably get on that, huh?â A funny, rather disgusted look formed on her face as he spoke of little old men. Sure, they were adorable, but she didnât want to think of them like that at all. âGross.â Thatâs all she had to say about the matter. At his doctor comment, she rolled her eyes with a chuckle. âOh, a doctor? So, if I ever accidentally get hit by a car for having my nose in my phone, I will know who to call.â
âYouâve got a few weeks to get them before the cold really kicks in. See, if you were more popular  with the old ladies you could get them to knit you a matching set. Itâs a shame really.â Carter teased, nudging her with his elbow. He could tell by the look on her face that his joke was just as poorly received as he thought itâd be. âYeah, yeah, I know. My bad.â His cocky little smirk stayed plastered across his face, he always pulled out the doctor card at just the right moment. âIs that your way of asking for my number.... you know, in case of emergencies like that one?â
missaudreygrey:
âIâve never really needed a winter coat, though I have one.. because we went skiing in the winter for our vacations. Itâs not much of a vacation to go to the beach when youâre always near one.â She shrugged with a smile on her face. âLittle old ladies have never been fond of me.. I donât know if itâs the blonde hair that turns them off or if they think I look like a bitch, but they donât like me.â She chuckled lightly before shaking her head. âHm, I was always taught to never accept rides from strangers.â
âYouâll need it this winter. Better get your hats and mitts out soon too, itâs already starting to get colder. Maybe stock up on some canned foods in case the power goes out this year like it did in the storm last winter.â He was just trying to be a nice guy and give her some tips. He also didnât mind looking at her or talking to her, she was good looking and just his type. âI was going to make a comment about little old men being fond of you instead but I thought that might be pushing it,â he chuckled, shaking his head at his comment. A grin tugged at his lips, âSmart girl. I wouldnât get in a car with me either. Us charming doctors are nothing but trouble.â
missaudreygrey:
âIâm from Orlando.. so I am used to tons of people around with busy agendas.â She chuckled, tucking hair behind her ear. âI donât know; in all the movies about small towns, if they donât know you, they will approach you and make it kind of awkward.â She shook her head. âThanks though, I let stereotypical situations control my mind sometimes, but I will definitely take that advice for sure.â
âOrlando, huh --- Youâre in for quite the winter, love. Better stock up on some essentials in case we get an unexpected snow storm.â He came from New York so he wasnât surprised by the weather or the storms here. âSometimes they do... itâs usually little old ladies who stop and want to chat with you. If youâre going to get directions from anyone it may as well be from them, they know this place better than anyone.â Carter sipped the cup of coffee in his hand and looked around a bit. âDonât worry so much, youâll be fine... Do you need help getting somewhere? I can give you directions or give you a ride.â

After a getting into a mild argument with Spencer over text, Taylor was more than happy to engage in the events happening around her, as opposed to staying on her phone. Making her way to the open bar at Carterâs friendâs wedding reception, Taylor ordered a gin and tonic and waited while the bartender mixed her concoction.
Spotting a familiar head of hair on the other side of the bar, Taylor debating going over to him. After all, this was one of few events they attended together that was catered to Carterâs friends and she didnât want to ruin his time. But, then again, Taylor didnât really know anyone else. And after a discouraging disagreement with her girlfriend â was Spencer even her girlfriend? â Taylor selfishly wanted a bit of affection. Even if it was fake.
Waiting until the bartender was finished with her drink and had handed it over, Taylor moved around the square bar to Carterâs side, finding him engaged with a couple of â what seemed to be â old friends. They were laughing happily, and Taylor realized that she hadnât really seen Carter like this before. Cozying up to his side in indication for him that she was there without saying a word, Taylor waited patiently for an introduction. She wasnât trying to pull him away from his friends, but she needed some familiarity in this jungle of bittersweet love. It was odd that she found it in him, however, as she never really expected such a thing to occur.
Carter had to admit that things had been good today. He and Taylor had made it to the wedding without killing each other and although sheâd had her face in her phone for most of the ride up sheâd put it away and managed to look like she was having a good time. It wasnât always like this with them so he was thankful when heâd seen her move through the crowd with some semblance of a smile on her face as she made her way to the bar. He really hadnât meant to leave her alone for so long but every time he tried to get away someone from his college days dragged him right back into a conversation about the good old days. Not that he was complaining, he hadnât realized how much he missed his friends until now.Â
When he felt someone slip into his side he smiled and slid his arm around her waist, his hand resting on her hip. Keeping in mind her earlier comment about her not liking the touchy feely stuff. As much as he wanted to keep up appearances he also wanted to make her comfortable. While still listening to his friend tell his story he pressed a small kiss to Taylorâs forehead, letting her know that he hadnât forgotten about her. He laughed a long with the rest of the small circle of friends before finally introducing his date. âEveryone, this is the girl I was telling you about... this is my girlfriend Taylor. Be nice to her.... and to me... donât any of you go telling her any embarrassing stories that she could use against me, got it?â He flashed a smile down at her before his friends stole her attention away, each taking a second to introduce themselves and of course tell her something about his wild college years.
missaudreygrey:
âOh, I am definitely new. Itâs a lot harder moving from a big city to a small town than I thought it would be⊠I feel like when I try to play it cool, I just look even more ridiculous.â
âWhere did you move here from?â He asked, curious as he too moved here from a big city. âIâm sure thatâs not the case. --- Iâll give you a tip though... These small town people are no different than the ones in the city. They donât pay much attention to you until they get to know you. They wonât notice how lost you look until you introduce yourself to them and when you do theyâll probably be nice enough to offer you directions or a ride. Donât worry about looking dumb, alright?â
âWell, this town certainly isnât big, but I find myself getting lost every damn day⊠I actually canât wait for the day I can walk around without using the GPS on my phone.â
âNow that I think about it, I probably look rather stupid walking around with my nose buried in my phone, asking it for directions.â
âYou new around here then?â he asked, raising a brow at her. âI was like that when I first moved to town. It happens to a lot of people, just play it cool and act like youâre texting or tending to some important business.â
