“Do tell, though, being here before me you should know. The Roses are around, what a fuckin’ joke. Bet my two cents the Charmings might be just ‘round the corner too. Have you seen any of them?”
“I saw Emerson a few days ago. As usual, a tragic excuse for a prince. He’s not even a royal, that’s what’s most annoying, and I could go on for days about that, but we’ve both heard enough about it from Mom. Haven’t seen the youngest Rose, but something tells me she’s not too far from a shopping complex or football practice. Thankfully, I haven’t seen the Charmings. Princeton’s do-gooder attitude makes me puke.”
“Shit, look at you. Such blasé. Mommy’s little joy and pride, are we?”
“Cooking? God, no. We’re getting pizza for the good ol’ days’ sake. Or perhaps my sis have actually acquired a finer culinaire taste?”
In her head the words sang, rather mommy’s little girl than daddy’s broken boy. "I try,” she grinned.
“Ha! Yeah, right. I can’t even tell the difference between turkey and pork. Pizza is great.”
Lucas’ ears perked up when he heard the sound of some slight confrontation outside the door; and as he turned, he saw the backs of two heads he recognized from the common room, as well as a girl he knew to be in his year. With what he hoped was an open smile, he concealed his letter behind his back and tried to relax his posture. “ Hey — were they giving you any trouble? If so, I apologize on their behalf. They seemed to want to leave so fast, I doubt they paid you one. “
Evelyn liked Lucas. He was kind, laidback, and managed to be his own person. In another life, maybe they could have been friends. In a life where Eve could relax and live without constantly maintaining a front. But this wasn’t that life...sadly. “Like I’d let them.” She spat out. Reining herself in, Evelyn’s voice contained less of a bite, “You shouldn’t apologize for those idiots. It could get you into trouble one day.”
“Very well. I’m gonna send the new bed in later today and look for someone to get rid of the damned single beds there, so don’t touch them. Dinner’s on me tonight. Call it… What’s the word again? Consideration. I’m sure you don’t have plans.”
“All right, got it. I won’t touch the beds. No...no plans. After all, that would require me making friends, and we both know that’s not happening anytime soon. Are you cooking or are we going somewhere?”
Eyes curious in their calculation, focused disinterestedly upon the situation at hand. It was pathetic, warbling humanity at it’s finest, attempting to grasp at something and someone they knew they could never have. And also hilarious in that very same sense. A smile wickedly upon her face, Alena lounged on one of walls–brittle stone cold and crumbling beneath her fingertips. “What a way to tell them.”
The older Slytherin was never afraid to show her disapproval of Evelyn. From observing, it seemed to the younger girl as if she saw her as weak for following her brother, since that’s all Eve allowed her to see. The sixth-year became used to it, being talked down to. Inside, it made her blood boil, but it would be easier for Alena to think of her as a non-threat. “It worked, didn’t it?”
“Aren’t you a bowl of cherries? As much as going on a domestic shopping spree with my sister sounds like the ultimate fun, I’ll pass and go with buying off a local fucktard.”
“Anyhow, how are we adapting? Have you made any friends yet? Scared off some preschoolers?”
“Okay, I’ll pick up that stuff for you then, so you can go out and have some fun doing things you actually like. When you come back, your room will be properly tricked out.”
”A little girl cried when I looked at her, so things are going pretty well so far. And who needs friends now that you’re here?”
“Don’t know, don’t care, need a bigger closet and sash windows don’t match my style. That room’s giving me allergic rhinitis yet the freak show for a staff here ain’t about changing me places. I’ve checked the hotels nearby online and I’d be better off fuckin’ dead. Are we down with trading, sis?”
“Do you think my room is any better? They’re all the same, Tommy. Maybe we can go to the store and look for some of those organizers that maximize your space. You know what, let me handle that. It’ll make it seem bigger. I can’t do anything about the windows though. Curtains? And I’ll buy you some air freshner too, that’ll help some.”
“ Y’don’t have to. I’ve got it, ‘f you have somewhere to be,“ Parker paused in his actions before going back to trying to scoop all the smaller shards together. His tone was flat when he continued. “ I’m not good at holding things. “
“I don’t have anywhere to be. Please, let me help.” Sometimes being able to help someone with something unrelated to her family made Evelyn feel lighter. It wasn’t work, it was calming. And she genuinely liked helping people. Methodically, she plucked more pieces and held out her hand for him to put the rest of the shards in her palm.
“Let me cut to the chase: how much d’you want to switch rooms with me?”
“Is your roommate really that bad?”

Harlem, who had been quietly reading a letter from her mother, looked up at what sounded like the start of an argument. She drew her own wand, intending to mediate. However, the Gryffindors fled before anything actually happened. Tucking her wand away, she turned back to her letter. “ They can be so obstinate sometimes, it’s quite aggravating. ” She had nothing against any of the houses, for she found preconceptions to be counterintuitive when it came to people trusting her to help them.
Realizing there was someone else in the Owlery, Evelyn stiffened, reassuming her visage. She knew who the Ravenclaw was, her family was well known to anyone who had or wanted anything to do with power in the Wizarding World. They were people to keep tabs on. This included Harlem. She would probably end up being an ally later on, but for now, Evelyn had to play pretend. “I agree. They act as if they’re first years when they’re about to graduate. Completely immature,” She scoffed, stroking her owl, Albie. “I don’t know why they’re even here.”
Greeted with crossed arms and a frown, Caspian couldn’t help but feel a dip in his spirits. Though the reasoning was clear and quite reasonable the thought of the fact still was something that he didn’t feel comfortable with. Friendship was friendship and despite anything at all he would always stay true to that. Even if he couldn’t be anything else, even if he was nothing in so many other senses, he would still be there. “What can I say, I’m a rebel through and through… I’ll keep that in mind for our next encounter. But Albie what a hootin’ tootin’ bro!”
The way he tended to speak was peculiar, unlike her family and those she frequently associated herself with. Caspian was an original--he probably would have fit in well with Ravenclaw. He was about as eccentric as them, but, in the end, Evelyn always believed Hufflepuff suited him. That’s where the purest people seemed to be, and Caspian was gold. “Thank you,” She kindly smiled, acknowledging that she knew it wasn’t easy, but his compliance was deeply appreciated by her. “Where are your pets?”
Steps taken out and about on a clear day after a storm was the only thing to be done for the young boy. After all the cool walls of the castle often brought a chill deepest within his bones; so here he was before the Owlry just about to wave hello when noticing it probably wasn’t the best moment. In grasping his own wand Caspian walked forward as a testament to being backup if needed. It was not. And so instead he shoved his hands deep within his pockets a cheeky smile on his face. “Now who who are you looking for?”
Caspian was one of the few people Evelyn could let her guard down around. As funny as it would seem to anyone else, she could trust him. In front of others, she'd basically ignore him, knowing any sign of friendship could destroy the connections she’d built with the Pureblood traditionalists. It was all for the greater good. She attempted to fight through her grin to display her displeasure at him backing her up, crossing her arms and putting on a frown, “You know you can’t do things like that.” Especially in front of Gryffindors, with whom Evelyn’s ties were the weakest. “Just wanted to visit Albie...”
“A Slytherin has just as much a right to be here as anyone else.” The pureblood narrowed her eyes as two Gryffindors stood before her, blocking the entryway to the Owlery. Her hand gripped tightly on her wand, prepared to take action if they didn’t move. Knowing she didn’t play, the duo ran, leaving Evelyn to visit her owl in peace.
The funny thing about armor is that it doesn’t just keep other people out. It keeps us in. We build it up around us, not realizing that we’re trapping ourselves.
