Shades of Truth // Sookie & Ash

Sookie nodded, knowing exactly what he meant. If the world wasn’t like it was right now, she would be back at Merlotte’s waitressing - the usual. The boring, never-changing usual. If she could go back and change the past, she thought she would. She’d do something different, set goals and actually act upon them. Life-long waitress didn’t sound to thrilling.

“Is the Roadhouse like a bar or something?” Sookie assumed. She had heard Ash mention the name once or twice before but hadn’t asked what kind of a place it was. So she was pretty much assuming it was a bar.

A smile spread against her lips and she looked up at Ash through the sunlight. It was really great seeing how he acted when he talked about Jo. She could tell he was in love with her. Apparently for a long time now. “I know you can’t change the past or anything,” she said to him, “But at least she knows your feelings now, huh? And she feels the same way, too.” Sookie grinned. “So in the end, you win.”

“Gone with her…?”

Ash laughed. "Yeah, Harvelle's Roadhouse. Tourist stop, bar, and hunter hangout. I guess it was kinda a home for some of the guys that swung through there. They didn't really have anywhere else. Good place to get jobs and information too."

The lake was in clear view now and Ash gazed out across the water. It was easy to tell that the water had been polluted like everything else, but it was better than nothing and safe to drink if you boiled it hot enough to get rid of the crap. If he didn't look right at the water, the sunlight and shadows almost made it look picturesque.

"Yeah, I guess. Though the thing that did it was my death. I think she would'a denied me for a lot longer if I had stuck around livin'."

Nodding at Sookie's question, Ash explained. "Jo was a hunter, like Sam and Dean. She finally went off on her own to fight the fight and I just kinda... stayed behind. I'm not... I don't take to well to killin' things. I didn't think I could make it, an' I didn' want to hold her back. All the same, it was the hardest thing I've ever done, watchin' her leave."

Back to Life - Jo and Ash

Jo shook her head and looked down at their feet at the edge of the rooftop. She had seen a lot of darkness before Ash got here. The inability to sleep, never knowing when one day started and the next one ended. Watching death and sadness all around her and not having the strength to help. When she flickered out into nothingness, the black cloud of conscious that took over her mind, it engulfed her vision, made it hard to see or hear or even speak. And when her molecules finally shifted back to normal and she was on Earth again, Jo just wanted to be dead.

There was a lot of darkness. But she was glad Ash couldn’t see it.

“Nevermind,” Jo lifted her chin and kissed him right below the ear.

Ash smiled softly. "Alright JoJo." Reaching up to run his fingers through her hair, Ash breathed in deeply. He was just so glad to be here with her. It felt right and, ghost or not, Ash was determined to make things work.

It was strange to think that he was still technically dead. He knew there was no way to recover his original body from the ashes. Purification by fire tended to be pretty absolute. Still, there had to be some way to gain corporeal form. Sam and Dean were still fighting the long fight somewhere down here in this wasteland. There was a good chance, with all they'd seen, they might have a way.

"So... how've you been JoJo? What kind of trouble you been gettin' yourself into down here without me?"

Stiles hasn’t exactly come after me with wolfsbane and mountain ash yet so I assume I’m safe from him for now, considering I know that he definitely doesn’t want me around. Besides, I’ve caused no harm in this camp thus far. Doubt anyone’s going to rip out my throat just yet.

That's true. I don't see anyone here disagreein' with you much...

...yet.

Claire could not retrain her stupidity. She felt foolish for not mentioning it sooner, of course he would want to know. The first thing Claire wanted to know about people was if she was safe.

“Oh I’m sorry, my mistake.” Claire said with an apologetic smile. “Yes, I’m human. Full human.”

“What about you? Are you human?” Claire asked curiously and as politely as she could.

Ash chuckled and extended his hand in greeting. "Full human, huh? Well I guess I'm full human too then. It's good to know there's still livin' breathin' people left that I ain't met yet."

It was still a surprise, every time someone new popped up around the camp. It was unbelievable to think that people were still out there, surviving, despite the odds.

Peter was silent. Really silent at first. Ash had a good point and there didn’t seem much more arguing to do with that. He chuckled at that last bit and said, “Doing what I want does make me happy.” And what he wanted most of the time? It was to go around baring his teeth and ripping out throats to get what he wanted.

Common fucking sense, man.

I'll be honest, I could die at any moment and it wouldn't be nobody's fuckin' fault. I'm lucky to be alive right now as it is. But it's made me realize that these days, it don't matter what kind of monster you've become to survive. Only thing that matters is, do the people around me want me alive? Because if other people don't want you around, you ain't gonna fuckin' make it.

Maybe I do have a choice,” Peter thought for a moment, scratching his chin. He continued, “But my choice is to play the role of the bad guy because it gets things done. Can’t be good because people expect you to make good decisions which get you no where.”

Like I give a shit? All that good guy, bad guy crap, whatever. You do what you want to do. I do what I want to do. That's how the world works. End of story. You want to be a bad guy? Fine. Whatever makes you happy. Don't expect me to piss myself over it.

Even if doing everything I could isn’t good enough? Even if in trying to keep the world from catching fire I failed to realize it had already burnt to the ground? Hiding… Strung out in cabins in the woods? Yes, ‘That crap in Heaven’, as you call it, saved them from being lost in that maze. Not only that, you’ve been here, fighting, haven’t you?

Lucifer is lucky. But he is also clever and manipulative. Killing him wasn’t going to be easy in the first place but now…?

I don't know what else to say about it. Look, there's only one reason I'm here and it ain't got nothin' to do with killin' or fightin'. Sure, I'll help where I can but I don't know what the fuck I'm doin'. I also don't think that really matters. What matters is that I'm gonna keep tryin'.

Peter was silent. He knew Ash was making a very good point here and he was right. As much as he hated to admit it, he was right. “Sure. Maybe we monsters have no restraint. We act before we think most of the time. And we’re killers because we know it’s easy for us. Hell, we’ve been labeled for killers, why not live up to the name?”
