✧ ・゚–––– ❝ sirius.
“oh, i bet.” he rolled his eyes, shaking his head. he’d never understand how someone could willingly choose to do homework, that wasn’t even due- he remembered, over the opportunity to sleep. sirius shrugged his shoulders. “i should, but i also don’t look like a zombie.”
‘ black , if i don’t do this right now , i’ll never do it . and i’ll get terrible marks , and nobody will hire me , and my life will be over . you’ll be walking through london and i’ll end up mugging you on the street . it’d be awkward for the both of us . how do you not get it ? my life ... over ! ’ dorcas whines , completely certain that if she picked sirius to roll she would absolutely come out victorious . hey , how much experience did she have mugging people versus his experience being mugged ? ‘ you prat . ’
✧ ・゚–––– ❝ lydia.
“Is that so?” asked Lydia raising an eyebrow. “And for how long have you been ‘resting’ your eyes? An hour, maybe?”. She knew very well that Cassie was lying. The girl sat in the chair next to the other gryffindor and looked at her with concern. “Can you please stop exhausting yourself that much? Really, it’s not healthy you know.”
‘ clearwater , i’m sorry , but how is it any of your business whether or not i finish reading this chapter ? ’ it’s an unusual tone for her , but being incredibly sleep deprived , the girl can’t find it in her heart to care .
✧ ・゚–––– ❝ sirius.
“you will not become homeless if you go to sleep right now. honestly, it’s not that necessary, doe,” he shook his head. “you have sleeping to do.” he countered, taking the book back and setting it on the floor. “you really need to take some relaxation time.”
‘ i’m perfectly relaxed . ’ obviously unrelaxed , dorcas scrunched her nose and stared at him for a moment . while she did , her eyelids grew heavy once again , and she closed them a moment . leaning forwards , she fell into a light sleep for the briefest of moments while she tried to decide how to rebut his statement . ‘ shouldn’t you be in bed ? ’
✧ ・゚–––– ❝ amelia.
Amelia sighed- hearing the words come from someone else was just as nice as reading them on her own. “Do you think Shakespeare ever fell in love?” Sure it was more fanciful that Amelia generally allowed herself to be as she leaned back and let the soft grass envelop her. But the wind was blowing softly and she was at the peak of contentment, and for a moment she didn’t want to think about the pound of homework piling up or her next test. “I imagine it must be dazzling- to be on the recieving end of that sort of passion.”
‘ i’m sure he did fall in love at some point or another . he did not , however , write that sonnet . it was written by elizabeth barrett browning . centuries after shakespeare died . ’ dorcas found the distraction that amelia provided quite nice , she honestly appreciated having a refuge from her schoolwork . she had a ethereal quality about her , something truly intelligent and something truly waifish coexisting in the same tightly wrapped blonde package . it was fascinating .
✧ ・゚–––– ❝ sirius.
“ah, yes. but are they working for you currently?” he quirked a brow, trying to prove his point. she may have been able to depend on coffee, but she would eventually end up tired again. “next week? so you’re doing assignments for a week ahead?” he shook his head. “no, no. we need to go, right now.”
‘ no , sirius , because if i go to bed right now then i’ll be homeless . weren’t you listening ? homeless . ’ that’s pretty sound logic , if you ask dorcas . ‘ i have work to do , so if you’ll excuse me ... ’ she reaches over to where he had moved her book , and slid it back in front of her .
✧ ・゚–––– ❝ sirius.
he slowly took the book away from her and put it in front of him. he nodded his head, “yes. you’ll be thanking me in the morning.” sirius laughed, “i may be a prat, but you’ll be a zombie tomorrow morning if you don’t head out now.”
‘ sirius ... can i explain to you ... the glory of caffeinated beverages ? ’ she leans forward , anchoring her chin on her elbow . ‘ besides , i’m not going to sleep anyways . if i sleep right now , i won’t be able to finish that book , so i won’t be able to do the work on it next week , then i’ll fall behind , then i’ll get terrible scores , and nobody will hire me after hogwarts , then i’ll be homeless . ’ dorcas , always one for the dramatics .
✧ ・゚–––– ❝ lydia.
After spending at least two hours in the library studying, Lydia closed the big, old book that was in front of her and rubbed her eyes. She felt tired, but mostly hungry. Oh, she’d kill for some fries or chicken wings. She forgot everything about food when she saw Dorcas sleeping on a pile of books. She want closer and kindly shook the girl just enough to wake her. Once Dorcas had opened her eyes she asked, “Cas, why are you sleeping in the library?”
dorcas , with a lackadaisical shrug , looked up at lydia . ‘ i’m not sleeping . i’m resting my eyes while i study . ’ this was an often occurrence for dorcas , she very rarely slept without actually passing out from exhaustion first . ( on the pitch , in the library , at the dinner table ... ) she worked until she dropped . ‘ these chairs are just ... really comfortable . ’
✧ ・゚–––– ❝ sirius.
for sirius, even though he barely paid attention in class, he was always able to get sufficient marks. so he never understood why some people worked as hard as they did. he reached over across the table, closing the book in front of her. she needed a break, and if sirius had to take away everything, he would. “or you can go to sleep now.”
she attempted to bat his hand away , but she was far too asleep to make any difference . ‘ no ... no ... no ... ’ she drags out the words , whining like he’d just taken away her absolute favorite stuffed animal . she jutted out her bottom lip , pouting . ‘ sirius ! don’t be a prat ! ’ she didn’t need sleep , she needed to finish studying for a test that hadn’t been announced yet .
✧ ・゚–––– ❝ blake.
Sleep had eluded Blake for what felt like days, though truth be told he was not even sure when he last slept. He had not long been back at school from visiting his family. Extenuating circumstances… that is what the Professors had allowed his absence on. He wasn’t even sure what to make of that, but it had been truthfully one of the most horrendous visits back to his home that he had ever experienced.
His sleepy eyes and exhausted had taken him to the library, which must have been subconscious, as he often sought solace there. Especially in times likes those, his housemates were often too boisterous, and he was not in the mood. Slumping by a book case, he finally took a breath and went over the events in his minds eye. Worn out eyes, threatening to tear up again, when he saw a figure in the distance. Hopefully they will just ignore me, he thought to himself
the library was something magical in itself . back home , dorcas had never in her life seen so many books in one place . let alone the fact that they flew and open on their own . she spent hours in the library , retroactively studying for tests weeks before they had been announced , reading books on subjects not required for class , falling asleep in the chairs . dorcas prided herself on her ability to keep her head down and mind her own fucking business . however , with her choice of friends , it was rather hard to avoid gossip in it’s entirety . it’s likely , that if she didn’t have gossiping roommates , she wouldn’t have noticed blake had been gone at all .
she wasn’t sure how to approach this situation . it was late , and she had been about to head to sleep ; when she noted a familiar figure beside the bookshelf she had intended to return the book in her grip to . she calmly placed the book back on it’s shelf , and offered blake a twinge of a smile . ‘ good to see you’re back . ’ that’s probably a useless thing to say , she thinks to herself . what would you want to hear after something like that ? it felt like words were useless , drying on her tongue .
✧ ・゚–––– ❝ sirius.
“sure you do,” he agreed, rolling his eyes. he tilted his head, waiting for whatever excuse she was going to give. he knew that dorcas was exhausted, but she wasn’t the type of person to just call it a night. “it’s almost eleven. you may need to consider going back and sleeping.”
she hums softly in response , still attempting to tune him out and read the book in front of her . ‘ i’ll sleep when i’m dead . ’ she mumbles , putting her finger on a phrase that her tired brain is having a particularly hard time processing , and running it along the end of the sentence . ‘ or when i finish reading this fucking chapter . which ever comes first . ’ despite the chapter not being required for this week , she knew it would be on next weeks test . dorcas studied a week ahead , that way she was never late with an assignment .
✧ ・゚–––– ❝ amelia.
There was something about daisies that Amelia liked- maybe it was the way in which they presented themselves- unassuming, happy. They were her favorite flower and on days like today she liked to hold them, twirling them between her fingers and watching the blur of white petals delicately spin. It was enough to turn anyone into a poet. “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways” She mused, quoting the poem as she tinkered with the petals of the flower. “Do you know it?” She lifted her head, her eyes sparkling with mirth,
dorcas nods slowly , pulling her nose out of the potions book she had been idly skimming . ‘ i love thee to the depth and breadth and height ; my soul can reach, when feeling out of sight . ’ the poetry sounded odd & slightly misplaced coming from her . she always felt somewhat wrong quoting poetry like that , her bristol accent so thick and somehow so out of place in the context of sonnets . her eyes flicked up to amelia and her flower .
✧ ・゚–––– ❝ skeeter.
“… and so there i was - in my bikini, remember - running along the beach, fish in my hands, trying desperately to get this thing back in the water ! of course, i couldn’t get my hair wet ‘cause i’d only just straightened it, so i ended up - get this - throwing it twenty metres by the tail back into the ocean. just call me a real hero.”
‘ that fish was probably scarred for life , you know ? like ... imagine ... imagine that happening to you , you being the fish . it was probably never the same . like , you know when there’s a mouse and it gets found by a cat ? even if the cat doesn’t kill it ... the mouse is never the same either way . ’
✧ ・゚–––– ❝ sirius.
“i wasn’t lurking, i swear,” he raised his hands as if he were surrendering. he looked down at the open book and then noticed her facial expression. “see that?” sirius said, mocking what she said to him. “that’s the face of someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing.”
‘ i know exactly what i’m doing . i’m just ... ’ see , she was an exceptionally hard worker . and exceptionally bright . but she was also completely and utterly inebriated by a lack of sleep . she deserved a bloody time turner , with all the classes she took . dorcas trailed off , her chin had been resting on her hand , and for a moment she closed her eyes which caused her elbow to slip . ‘ what time is it ? ’
✧ ・゚–––– ❝ sirius.
he laughed, “oh of course not. you were just resting your eyes.” sirius rolled his eyes, deciding to sit in a chair next to her. “i wasn’t lurking. believe it or not, dorcas, i do actually come to library every once in awhile.”
‘ see that ? ’ dorcas gestures vaguely in the direction of his face . ‘ that’s the face of someone who was ... lurkin’ . ’ her voice is thick with sleep , hair falling out of it’s bun all over the place . her attention returns to the book open in front of her , and brown eyes strain trying to make sense of the words on the page . when did transfiguration get so .... confusing ?
