Metamorphosis
A flower blooming in the summer sun
Cannot remember barely sprouting through the soil
Its brave shoot pushing off the chains of a seed coat that it had outgrown
Its cotyledons bursting out, eager for life
Except as a faint memory, a scarcely known shadow of a past that it was too young to comprehend
An eagle soaring across the autumn sky
Cannot remember those long days curled in a mineral cage
Waiting in safety and relishing the nourishment provided in its home
Chipping away at the one spot that would yield to an outside world filled with sight and noise
Delighting in the warmth of its mother’s wings
And knowing companionship before a life of solitude, painting the sky with its wings
An ocean wave crashing on a winter shore
Cannot remember the ripple that started out at sea
The one that carried a hopeful promise from the wind in a distant land
The earth kissing the water ever so gently, sending a message to corners of the world that were just out of reach, but waiting for a sign that would shake them to their core
A butterfly dancing in the spring breeze
Cannot remember when it lost all hope
When everything was bleak and the future was lost
When the darkness closed in and engulfed the universe
And all that remained was the knowledge that nothing would ever be the same
And suddenly, light
