Israel continues its crimes in Gaza, targeting journalists, civil defense teams, and innocent civilians. Today, Nasser Medical Complex was directly bombed, killing four journalists, members of the civil defense, and civilians who were inside the hospital.

The entire world remains silent in the face of these atrocities. How long will this brutality continue? When will Israel stop targeting civilians? When will the world rise against this injustice?

People of the world, we are dying of hunger, under bombardment, and in despair—while you remain silent. Stand with us, be our voice… you are our last hope.

Bornean Orangutans

Borean Orangutans (Pongo Pygmaeus) are one of three recognized orangutan species. They are a native species on the island Borneo located in southeast Asia. They can be found in tropical and subtropical forests of the island, as well as swamps and mountain forests. Compared to other orangutans, Bornean orangutans have a broader face, shorter beard, and are slightly darker.

General Info:

They have a population of 107,700

Their weight average is around 66-220 pounds

Their height average is around 3.3-46 ft.

They are a K-selected species:

High offspring investment

Slow maturing rate

Less offspring at a time ( An orangutan will have usually three to four offspring in their life.)

Ex. Humans are K-Species

Unfortunately, K selected species are at risk for rapid environmental impacts (wildfires, deforestation, etc.) due to their slow reproductive rates and few offspring.

Threats:

Bornean Orangutans are at threat for illegal hunting, logging, mining, and deforestation for agriculture. 

Indonesia had fires in 1997-98 that destroyed almost 10 million hectares of forest, this fire also killed up to 8,000 orangutans in East Kalimantan.

Northwest Bornean Orangutans are the most threatened sub-species of Bornean Orangutans. Their population is only ~1,500.

Conservation efforts:

Currently, conservation efforts for the bornean orangutan include persistent protection over their habitat, fighting against illegal pet trade, and reducing negative engagement between bornean orangutans and humans, specifically during plantation management.

What can we do?

Try to buy sustainable products such as palm oil, paper, and timber. 

You can identify sustainable paper and wood products with the FDC (Forest Stewardship Council) label.

Palm oil is found in many products ranging from baked goods, lipstick, shampoo, margarine, and more. To check if the palm oil used was sustainably sourced, you can look for the RSPO (The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) label

As always: Reuse, Reduce, Recycle.

Reducing your carbon footprint and the convenient but damaging products will help animals like the Bornean Orangutans.

Support known conservation organizations.

Donating is not a must, but it can help push aid and research for helping endangered animals. Try to donate to local organizations near you, or organizations that are specific to their cause. 

Raise Awareness!

Raising awareness of these unfortunate realities will always prove to be positive. No matter how little effect it causes, it's still progress.
