I know everybody brings up how long leaders last now compared to early books, but I think the much more obvious difference is how long deputies last.
In arcs 1 and 2, we go through Redtail, Lionheart, Tigerclaw, Fireheart, Whitestorm, Greystripe, and Brambleclaw. Then in arcs 3-10 (presumably, I doubt Ivy or squirrel die this arc) (minus one because DOTC is exempt) we continue to have Brambleclaw, then Squirrelflight and Ivypool.
The first two arcs went through 7 ThunderClan deputies. The following 7 arcs only went through 3 (2 if you arenāt counting Brambleclaw, since he was just continuing from the previous arc and probably shouldnāt be counted twice)
I liked when the deputies would die frequently. Leaders living longer can be justified. They have 9 lives, and recently thatās been implied to beat out death by old age, so it makes sense to go arcs with the same leader, even if itās not my preference. But deputies are constantly expected to be on the front lines, the same as their leaders. Except they only have one life.
I guess itās a symptom of only making beloved fan favorites deputy. They dont want to kill off Ivypool anytime soon. Considering the timing and how unceremoniously it happened, I think itās possible Brambleclaw was demoted and killed off because they saw fandom sentiments towards him too. (They definitely started noticing which characters we favored through the plush and mini polls.)
I need the deputies to die more often. And tangentially related, I need more background nobodies dying. There are too many, and having a random cat get killed always upped the stakes without harming the narrative. I miss high stakes warrior cats.
I agree. One of the biggest problems I have with how the series is progressing currently is the lack of casualties, and thatās evidenced by ThunderClan being about 3x the size it was in into the wild. Like I know we live in a much more peaceful era now but food shortages and disease thrive in populations that are overpopulated, if the cats arenāt killing each other, can nature do it? Just a little more often than the never we currently experience, as a treat?
Thereās just been quite a few examples recently where conditions are prime for mass casualties and then only like 1 plot important person dies and thatās it. Iām looking at you ASC.
AVOS and TBC did actually kill off a significant number of characters to their credit, but sadly ASC just brought that to a halt. And we still have cats in ThunderClan, our main pov clan, that basically arenāt characters because theyāve not had the chance to do anything ever.
But to get to your original point, deputies are just too stable now, obviously we have had deputy turnarounds recently like Crowfrost and obviously Reedwhisker, but it would have been nice if fan fav Crowfeather had been splattered by that eagle rather than miraculously being fine with zero explanation. Surprise us Erins! Suddenly kill off an old fan fav!
At this point I think the fandom will riot if Jayfeather doesnāt die in False Dawn like everyone is predicting š we yearn to be very unexpectedly heartbroken
