A Forgotten Frankenstein’s Monster

A revolution can break lives of many — even those of lifeless objects. Intended as a Gothic Revival apartment house, this building’s construction was abruptly stopped in 1917, when the October Revolution unleashed. Aristocrats were persecuted, working people (kind of) prevailed and exquisite lifestyle got banned.

In time new owners had finished the project, but according to their own Constructivist tastes. And now the former Fetter and Ginkel apartment house stands like a sad monster from a certain novel, with a ghostly rose window blooming on a seamy rectangular wall.

Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception

Right behind the Moscow Zoo there is a great Gothic style cathedral. Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception was built in 1911, before the revolution and the Soviets, by the architect named Tomasz Bohdanowicz-Dworzecki. The place was chosen not by accident. In the beginning of the XX century there was a huge community of catholic Polish people.

The architect was inspired by Westminster Abbey for the facade and by Milan Cathedral, Duomo di Milano, for the dome.

In 1938 the cathedral was closed by the Soviet authority and later the building was occupied by Mosspetspromproyekt (try to pronounce!), an organization supervising industrial and civil construction of Moscow.

After the Soviet Union broke down the cathedral was restored and opened for public again.

Varenichnaya Pobeda on the Arbat is a popular chain restaurant that came to Moscow right from Kiev. In a cosy interior resembling typical Soviet apartments you can enjoy traditional Ukranian dishes, such as vareniki, borsch and more.

Frolov's Apartment House

It was a city estate before Shukhov built three floors up in 1940s. Located in Archangelsky lane, this building originally belonged to the state counsellor Kryukova in 1836 and was purchased by Frolov's family in 1884.

In 1902 the owner changed again, Alexander Bari, a famous Russian manufacturer, bought the apartment house and owned it until 1918.

Now it's an apartment house with 27 flats.

The Main Building of A.L. Leman's Estate

A beautiful building in the centre of Moscow is a famous gothic revival work of the Russian architect Adolph Erichson. It was designed in 1899 for Anna Louisa Leman, the wife of an honourable citizen of Moscow.

After the Russian Revolution from 1917 to 1937 the building was owned by several departments of USSR. Finally it became The Central Building of Architect in 1937.

The Sleeping Beauty

Once a luxury country house, now Sukhanovo estate looks almost deserted. This place, beautiful as well as neglected, was nurtured by the Russian princely house of Volkonsky and then bruised by the Soviets. Now it houses a private school and a sanatorium.

If you find decadence romantic, take some time to visit Sukhanovo. Thankfully, it's only 40 minutes away from Moscow. (Take a train from Paveletsky train station to Rastorguevo ("Расторгуево"), then a bus No 379 to Sukhanovo.)

A Flat Building

A flat building situated on Presnenskiy Val is not so famous as its twin from Odessa. But it's worth to see it. The building was constructed in 1910.

Vasnetsov's House Museum

A house museum of a great russian artist Viktor Vasnetsov located on Vasnetsov lane. The building also contains his studio. The artist had lived in it from 1894 to 1926.

The house looks like a typical house from russian fairytales. Actually it was the main theme of Vasnetsov's works.

In fact, the house was designed according to Vasnetsov's pictures.

The Russian Parnassus

Ostafyevo State Museum "The Russian Parnassus" is the former estate of prince Pyotr Vyazemsky. It's located about 10 kilometres south of Moscow. Nowadays it's a literary and historical museum.

The lime-tree alley of this estate Pushkin who liked to visit this place called the russian Parnassus.

Kotelnicheskaya Embankment Building

Unfortunately, Moscow doesn't have castles, but we have the Seven Sisters instead. Kotelnicheskaya Embankment Building is one of the Sisters designed by Dmitry Chechylin in 1952. It has a hight of 176 metres and its own wiki page.

In fact, the building had been the highest residential building in the world during 1952-1964. 

Also this Sister is a host for Galina Ulanova's museum located right in her former apartment.
