It’s kinda beautiful to me that FMA:B is widely regarded as the best anime. Like after so long of women being kept out of Shonen and female characters being undermined in the genre, the Shonen story written by a woman that has arguably the best female characters in anime beats every other anime in every poll. Poetic.

i love how in fma they dont make the strong and competent women just be jokes or bits. like from what i remember they dont do it to women at all period but like yknow what i mean? typically in anime if theres a woman whos really good at her job or who's strong and confident and such they tend to be just a joke until a guy comes along and steals the spotlight from them. but with fma they dont do that.

for example olivier, i was really worried at first and thought that they were gonna make her a joke like a "hahaha she takes her job way too seriously" and while they make some jokes about her being like a bear it relates to the fact that shes competent at her job and that no one could truly replace her, man or woman. she's scary, intimidating, and shes one of the most important people in the story even for how late she shows up in it.

then theres izumi and her being the teacher of ed and al. shes the stereotypical 'strong and mean' teacher trope ofc but they dont use it to demean her. they use it to beat up the protagonist and go "yeah this is 100% their teacher and she's obviously stronger because... she trained them". like yeah they make jokes about how she stranded them at an island and called it easy because she had to be stranded at briggs for six months but they once again dont use it to demean her as her husband then tells her to "not go comparing herself to normal people". cause shes strong and people one of the strongest characters in the cast dare i say. and it actually feels like it as well

with winry its a lot more subtle especially because they tend to use her automail obsession a lot as a joke (along with her beating the hell outta ed) but the respect is definitely there. as there's a scene where ed makes a joke out of it calling her an 'automail otaku' (otaku basically means obsessed person) and a "gearhead" and instead of saying an insult back she tells her that she'll become a gearhead if it helps him achieve his goal. not to mention that whenever ed gets his automail broken he goes to winry. and the first time he goes to her he asks her to get it done in a week and she gets it done in three days pulling all-nighters and everything. granted she forgot a screw- but she's still competent and its pretty clear that ed relies on her.

with riza its pretty obvious that shes competent as she literally watches roy's back. she's his literal bodyguard and whenever it rains she's trusted to keep him safe and thats a pretty big deal, especially when dealing with alchemists. like when roy is facing scar while its raining and tries to fight him he forgets that he cant use his flame alchemy. so riza trips him and fires at scar to make sure that roy is safe. then theres the scene with lust and riza where she thinks that lust killed him and goes haywire, emptying all of her bullets on lust before falling to the ground and wanting to die. when roy confronts her on that later its a slightly comedic moment (in anime) but it resolves with it being more serious and him telling her that he still trusts her to watch his back and that she shouldnt ever give up on life

lan fan!! lan fan is ling's bodyguard and once again one of the most competent people in fma. she even takes on gluttony at one point. her constant watch of ling is used as comedy at first, look at the strong silent type watching over the prince 24/7 but this is because at first lan fan, ling, and fu are mainly comedic characters. they have their lore moments at first but it's highly outweighed by their comedic timing. ling sending a signal flare, passing out because he hasn't eaten enough, eating ed's wallet out, eavesdropping, climbing through the windows. these are all done in comedic ways but during the fight with wrath when lan fan's arm is injured she cuts it off. like literally, cuts it off. all because it was slowing them down. ling himself even says that lan fan was more prepared to do things like that than he was. then there's her going through automail rehabilitation in 6 months. remember, that ed did it in a year. shes halfing the time all so that she can get back to her duty and protect the prince. which at this time in the story is not a joke anymore.

fma's way of writing women and strong women is definitely some of my favorite that ive seen so far like- ever. and honestly its created some of my fav characters ever so ummm hope you liked my ramblessss!!

Genuinely haven't loved a woman as much as I love her. She is so mentally and physically strong. I love how much she cares for her people. It is actually evil that there isn't more fan-art of her. She is one of THE women of all time.
