“Reminder that aspecs can still date and love their friends and family” and themselves. And their hobbies, and their passion in life, and the media they consume and their pets and places they like to go and food and drinks they like and in fact they don’t have to subscribe to the idea of “love” at all. You don’t have to date or have friends or family to be a person. You don’t have to fit into what society wants your life to be like to not be a robot. When I complain about aphobes implying that people who don’t date are machines, I’m not just complaining that they devalue platonic or familial love. They’re devaluing the idea of being your own person and thats a type of aphobia people don’t talk about enough. Aspecs can do whatever they want forever and that includes everything.

More thoughts abt various versions of Betty. The critical thing Mark Waid misunderstands about her is that her tomboyishness has never been something that bothers her or something she needs to overcome. In his run, Betty is pressured to “grow up” by becoming more feminine, to the point of becoming someone she’s not, until she ultimately finds a way to be feminine that she’s comfortable with. Which is something many girls experience, so I can see why he included it. But that’s not Betty’s experience. Betty has always been comfortable with her femininity, she enjoys dressing up for nice events. She also enjoys that hyperfemininity is not her day-to-day. Throughout the digests she is shown to be perfectly comfortable and happy with more masc clothing and hobbies, compared to Veronica who has a very rigid view of what a woman should be. Waid Betty seems insecure about her masc traits. She gives into peer pressure the first time she’s criticized for it. Digest Betty is frequently pressured by Veronica to be more feminine, but she shrugs it off every time (perhaps not EVERY, impossible for me to read every comic yk)

I understand that these characters get adapted in a million different ways but seeing a man write a teenage girl like this just rubs me the wrong way. Especially when the source material depicts Betty’s masculinity in an entirely different way. Like I understand what he was going for, again this is a process many girls go through. But the whole point of making Betty a tomboy in the comics was to show that not EVERY girl has to embrace femininity. And the girls who forced her to go through this continue to be her friends. They’re characters we’re supposed to like. Again, this transition is seen as an inevitability and arguably a Good Thing even tho she was happier before. Embracing girliness is what helps her “grow up” in this run. The only person who recognizes this as a problem is Archie and since he’s Archie he handles it in the worst way possible

I’m ranting at this point but yeah, this was possibly the most bad faith way to adapt tomboy Betty and I get angrier each time I think about it

One of the worst media illiteracy things to me is when someone tells you to stop watching a show because you don’t like one part of it. I saw a woman on TikTok complaining about Season 4 Episode 6 of The Boys and every comment was “Don’t watch the show then” ITS A FIVE SEASON SHOW WITH TWO SPIN OFFS AND TWO MORE IN THE WORKS. No one on tumblr has to know anything about you. no one has to know you still read your old Harry Potter books or that the only rap artist you like is Eminem. No one is going to say “oh of course you’re the One True Good Person with a Good Reason!” when you say that rap is difficult to listen to because of your auditory processing disorder or you’re only a part of the Marauders fandom. hi, filipino here. just want to say that our independence day is june 12, not july 4. july 4 is when the united states government decided that they would recognize our freedom, specifically because it is your independence day and they wanted to cement their cultural hegemony over our country. and because of their influence on our country this was recognized for a time as our independence day. we still commemorate it, but i hope you can understand why we don’t want our independence day to be associated so closely with our former colonizer. it wasn’t even a work holiday for us.

june 12 is the day that we filipinos declared our own independence for ourselves, and that is what we celebrate as independence day
