In order to put some sort of a limit to my uncontrollable habit of inhaling hummus at financially unfortunate speeds, I decided I'm going to get bell peppers and use the hummus as vegetable dip. This is Haolong dongi, a new species of iguanodontian ornithopod found covered in what is basically,,, hedgehog quills??

The fossil is a stunningly preserved skeleton from China that includes evidence of hard armour scales on the tail (like in the much smaller Kulindadromeus), and a coat of spines along its neck and back! The name appropriately means "spiky dragon".

Not only is a spiny iguanodont wild on its own (this individual is over 2 metres long and is a juvenile, other ornithopods with quill-like structures are much smaller), these spines also appear to be an entirely new skin structure? They're apparently not feathers or scales, but a secret third thing.

Here the result of the Ein Yabrud quarry #paleostream. An important locality from the Cretaceous of Palestine. While mostly famous for it's marine snakes and early mosasauroids, beautiful fish fossils and rich invertebrate fauna are completing this picture!

While originally our wheel had "Bet Meir Formation" written on it we quickly figured that most material came from a single quarry with the fossiliferous strata being either part of the Bet Meir or the underlying formation. As the label of the fauna isn't that important to us...

...we simply went with the quarry name for this. Interesting for the depositional environment is that it wasn't a Solnhofen like lagoon, not super salty or anoxic but simply a steady stream of fine sediment that brought us these beautiful details. This represents out first...
