We are so spoiled lately (and so are they!)
You've lost the whole program? Dear me, that was careless.
RIVALS - 2x05
Tony Baddingham’s biggest tragedy is not having had the opportunity to go to boarding school. It wouldn’t have fixed him but it would have introduced him to the concept of gay sex
A little meta about Tony in Rivals...
Thinking back on Tony, Maud and the camera story with his father, it's been interesting seeing how that's been interpreted. I'd read online that some people took Tony's twisting of the story, from it originally being one where it sounded like he was the one being bullied/abused by his father, to the opposite being true, where he's the violent, 'crazy' one.
I thought Tony telling the story initially was him being vulnerable, and that us, as an audience, making the inference that his father was abusive, by taking the camera and pulling the film out of it and it being thrown out the window, was correct.
When Maud gave him the camera as a gift and inferred his dad being abusive, I don't think Tony properly realised what he'd communicated, let alone had anyone respond kindly to being vulnerable like that before. He's very much a guy who puts up airs to appear tough and strong (like a peacock lol, and as bullied folk tend to do), so it made him tremendously uncomfortable, being properly seen like that, as he's not used to exposing himself, and perhaps doesn't quite trust Maud yet. So Tony walked his story back and lied that he was the one who threw the camera out the window as a proxy to "smashing his (his father's) face in", to appear the tough, strong one again. Although that was evidently his desire with his father. In a way he was testing Maud out further, to see how she'd respond to him being more forthright about his darker feelings, and to find that she'd not baulked from him, or looked at him with disdain, afforded him solace. Enough for him to laugh, and her along with him. Which is to say that Maud's original interpretation of it was the right one, and his father was actually abusive to him as a kid, fact.
There's also the symbolism at the end, with Tony ruining the video tapes, that infers he's now become his abusive father and repeating the cycle. I'm thinking this further supports the idea that Maud has clocked him accurately, and feeds into the media talk around them being kindred spirits. In any case, it's an interesting detail, among his villainous hijinks.
Indeed, Tony didn't lie telling that story the first time and I agree that it's us (and Maud) misinterpreting his words, I don't think he was aware of how it sounded.
I don't think he lied about throwing the camera through the window though? I think he has an anger issue. That being said, the fact that his father took the film out in this manner in front of him is already abusive without throwing the camera through the window. We already know that Tony has daddy issues the size of a small planet si in this context it matches.
But yes, everything else here! Especially the parallel with the last scene and tony destroying the tape in a way that match the description of his father destroying his camera film... Oh Tony.
New photo of David and the cast of Rivals at the NYC premiere from Alex Hassel's Instagram
Video of that interview from that article from yesterday (spoilers ahead!!)
More and longer clips!
Clip one: David on his every day supervillain (taxes, traffic, and passwords)
Clip two: David's introduction and entrance, how he's had the same socks for over twenty years and how his big toe nail penetrates his socks, and how his sock hoarding irritates Georgia (as it should)
Clip three: David doing his wide stance, playing the existential chicken game and fondling the chicken bag of questions (I realize this sounds made up).
He says here that "life gets better with age" 😭 because you care less and you know yourself better and "you feel less embarrassed" 😭 DT not the growth and self acceptance 😭
Clip four: David on how he's "way too well-behaved" (derogatory, from his tone lol) to steal anything from sets and how he "always asks for permission". Although he did almost drop a spoiler about something he was given (?) on Rivals 2
FULL PANEL FOR THE SECOND DAY BABY
tysm to this lovely lovely person for filming
One sweet bit:
Moderator: If you were to decorate the TARDIS, what would it look like on the inside?
David: Interior design is not my forte. ...Why are you laughing at that? It might be my forte! You didn't know it wasn't! Clearly you thought you did! But - I have married someone with very good taste, so I would ab-
Audience: *laughs*
David: *laughs* not because she married me! But because she's really good at interior design. So I would get Georgia in and say, "What do we do now?" Which is sort of what I do in life. And I would be very excited to see what she would do with that.
Mod: would you want more technology or more comfort in there?
David: Not prescribing anything!
Mod: you don't want a couch?
David: Georgia doesn't like it when I have ideas.
Audience: *laughs*
David: Every now and again if we're like, you know, decorating or something she'll come and say "d'you like this? Or d'you like this?" And she'll look at me and I'll know that there's a right answer and a wrong answer. And now I've learned to just wait until she tells me, cus early on I'd say "oh that one!" And she'd go "try again..."
