So I just got back from the new 'Godzilla' movie... (spoiler free)
I'm not exaggerating when I say that one of my earliest memories is of watching Godzilla movie marathons. Those movies were the pinnacle of cool, with 'King Kong Vs. Godzilla' being the holy grail of movies to actually get a chance to watch(this was before kids had their own DVD collections, or could just pull up whatever they wanted to watch on the internet).
Godzilla was one of my absolute favorite things in the entire world when I was little(barely beating out gummy bears). It is this reason that almost nothing in existence captures my attention like giant monsters.
And then in 1998 there was that movie called 'Godzilla' that had what felt like years of advertising and production tie-ins leading up to its release, and as a young impressionable Godzilla fan I ate that all up.
Admittedly I loved it when it came out, I now know better. But in all honesty the movie isn't all that bad, it's just not worthy of it's title. I believe that if they called the monster in it(and the movie itself) a different name it wouldn't be nearly as disliked as it is.
Now onto the new movie. I wasn't really worried if I would like it or not, because frankly I'm so biased in favor of it that it would have to be absolute garbage for me to dislike it.
They did a real good job of staying true to the original monster while not having it be just a carbon copy of previous ones(this Godzilla has more "realistic" features roughly based on Komodo dragons, eagles, bears, and pit bulls).
I must say that it has the same problem that I've always felt that every single Godzilla film in history has had, too many people, not enough Godzilla XD.
The theater I was in actually applauded twice during the movie, first time being near the end, second time at the end.
So all in all it was a major nostalgia trip mixed in with my tastes as an adult.
TLDR; I loved Godzilla when I was a kid, and the new Godzilla movie lives up to the high standards set by my nostalgia.
