"Music is necessary."
- Mike from Pentimento's response to the question, "Music is..."
MUSIC IS...
I've been thinking of a new idea for this blog. Everyone has a different meaning of music and what it is, should be, and how they approach their work. I'll be asking musicians to simply finish the sentence, "Music is..." and the findings will be posted here. I'm hoping for some intriguing words. Reply or message me for artist requests.

It takes a lot of money to raise money for a good cause and not make a profit off of it yourself. I’ve been researching it for a few days now learning the legal aspects of it and what kind of goals I would need to set and apparently I need a “headquarters” which sounds very official. And a board...

I don’t usually do this but I have to acknowledge and pay some kind of tribute to Amy because she was huge influence on me. Yes she led a reckless life and had this coming. I watched the videos of her latest performance in Belgrade and was completely heart broken that she seemed to have gotten...

10 Questions - Streetlight Fire
Who are you and what do you do in the band? J: I'm Josh, and I play guitar and sing. S: I’m Steven, and I play bass. K: I am Keaton. I play lead guitar and sing.
How was the band formed? J: Our original drummer, Jeff, and I used to spend our weekends playing Tony Hawk Pro Skater and playing Starting Line covers in my garage. The Tony Hawk games started to suck, so we quit that and kept playing music. Keaton and Steven then joined the band in hopes we were still playing Tony Hawk.
How would you describe the band's music? K: I would describe it as an orgy of everything we heard that day. I also would like to think we sound like the result of The Dangerous Summer and Transit hanging out a lot.
If someone has never listened to your band, which song would you like them to listen to first? S: I would definitely tell them to listen to Prospect Park. It’s my favorite song on the album and a great listen for sure.
What is the writing process like? J: Keaton or I usually write little pieces of songs (melodies, lyrics, chord progressions) in our own time. We get together regularly during the week to expand upon those ideas and spend the rest of the night demoing those songs out. We then present the demos to the rest of the dudes, who then essentially cut the fat out.
Which Reality TV show would you like to be on? K: I honestly don’t what reality shows exist at the moment to even answer that question. I think if I created my own, though, it would take place in space.
What bands do you believe deserve more credit/exposure? J: Absolutely The American Scene and From Indian Lakes. Those two bands need to get huge or else there is not justice in the world.
Do you have any pre-show rituals? S: I like to slap the back of my head to get my head in the game.
What are the band's plans for the year? K: At the moment I would say our goal is to travel around a bit and get out name out as much as possible, write a lot, and hopefully put out some awesome music.
What is your ultimate goal for the band? S: I want to help this band grow to reach it’s full potential musically. K: My personal ultimate goal for the band is to be able to play music and have it support me completely. J: My ultimate goal for us is to be the biggest band in the world.Â

VersaEmerge is a band that has been through a slew of line-up changes to the point where only one member of the original lineup, Blake Harnage, is still in the band, which means that there is a long list of past members. Anthony Martone (the band’s original drummer) has now announced that he as well as Spencer Pearson (original vocalist, vocalist for Decoder) and Josh Center (original rhythm guitarist) have started a new band. A name for the group as well as other members has yet to be confirmed, but it looks like many more details will be announced soon. Check out a tweet from Martone below by clicking “Read More”.

10 Questions - Tides Of Man
Who are you and what do you do in the band? I'm Spencer, and I play guitar.
How was the band formed? We were all playing music separately, and then we decided to play music together. It was exciting.
How would you describe the band's music? Indie-prog-post-rock-ish
If someone has never listened to your band, which song would you like them to listen to first? Statues, or Chemical Fires
What is the writing process like? It's changed throughout the albums. Currently we tend to write a basic structure and then record it, and then add to it and cut and paste, etc. Before, particularly on Empire Theory, we jammed a lot more.
Which Reality TV show would you like to be on? The Wild Within. I'd also be down to be a travel buddy with Anthony Bourdain on No Reservations.
What bands do you believe deserve more credit/exposure? Goodnight Neverland, Oceana, States, Cloudkicker, and anything that Aaron Marsh or Cody Bonnette does.Â
Do you have any pre-show rituals? Sometimes we pat each other on the back, and say "Luv'ya'ass" Basically, we bro down.
What are the band's plans for the year? We are looking for a new singer now. In the meantime we continue to write everyday and plan to release an LP and tour like crazy.
What is your ultimate goal for the band? We want to create music that people love and can inspire them to do well in life. We also want that music to sell insanely well so we never have to worry about the gas being $3.88 a gallon again. That shit sucks.
You can check our new demo out here:Â (feel free to sing on it and send it in) Also, keep updated via: www.facebook.com/tidesofman Don't send us on myspace. That shit is dead.
