"Music is necessary."
- Mike from Pentimento's response to the question, "Music is..."
MUSIC IS...
I've been thinking of a new idea for this blog. Everyone has a different meaning of music and what it is, should be, and how they approach their work. I'll be asking musicians to simply finish the sentence, "Music is..." and the findings will be posted here. I'm hoping for some intriguing words. Reply or message me for artist requests.

10 Questions - Restore
Who are you and what do you do in the band? My name is Mike and I'm the vocalist in Restore.
How was the band formed? We originally formed in 2008 under the name Cadence. That band underwent quite a few member changes and sound reconstructions. At the beginning of 2011, when we finally found a lineup that worked, we didn't feel like the band name fit anymore so we decided on Restore.
How would you describe the band’s music? After we get done playing, we've heard people tell us we sound like this band or that band. Kids have told us we remind them of Defeater, Rosetta, Oceana, Thrice, among others. We feel like our sound is unique and hard to categorize. I guess if you had to, you can call it post-hardcore; we don't like to put a label on it though. We're just a band making music that we love; stuff that we feel has a message, purpose and passion. We've always vowed to not try to fit into any mold or emulate the work of others.
If someone has never listened to your band, which song would you like them to listen to first? "Defeat. Release." But of course, we hope you'd check out our whole album. It's called "Wanderer" and was released May 17th 2011.
What is the writing process like? Juan typically writes the main structure of the songs. He either records it or puts it into tab-it and sends it to the rest of us. This way we get a general understanding of the song's feel. At practice, we then take that idea, and as a group, add ideas, make suggestions, etc. There's been times where we've completed a song in one session. Other times it takes a month or more. It really just depends. The bottom line is, we won't call the song finished until we're all satisfied.
Which Reality TV show would you like to be on? The Office.
What bands do you believe deserve more credit/exposure? - Open Fire! from Washington - Thieves from Chicago - Droughts from Chicago
Do you have any pre-show rituals? We don't. We just have fun, joke around, and enjoy ourselves. We start getting into the mind set as we're sound checking.
What are the band’s plans for the year? We're looking at a short midwest tour in August. We'd like to put out a 3-4 song demo out on vinyl by Fall '11 at the latest. More generally, we want to consistently write, play shows and have as much fun doing so as possible.
What is your ultimate goal for the band? We're in this with all our hearts. We're just going to keep writing the music we love, performing with the same passion and honesty that we always do, and hope that our hard work and love for music pays off.

10 Questions - Presadona
Who are you and what do you do in the band? My name is Kris Kirgis, and I am the vocalist for Presadona.
How was the band formed? The band started back in 2006 by guitarist Mynor Gonzalez. Over five years and some line up changes we got to be the band we are today.
How would you describe the band's music? We definitely have a wide range of musical influences that come through in our music. But if I were to try and sum it up as best as possible I would say that we are a solid mix of post-hardcore, metal, and a little popiness for good measure.
If someone has never listened to your band, which song would you like them to listen to first? God Awful, probably my favorite song we've ever written.
What is the writing process like? Mynor takes most of the reigns when writing the guitar parts but our other guitarist Steve helps as well. Then after the basic outline of the song is done I start putting lyrics to it and Scott just goes crazy on the drums. But our songs are almost always changing and evolving slightly until we finally lay them down in the studio.
Which Reality TV show would you like to be on? I really hate reality TV, I would like to go on Jersey Shore and punch everyone in the ankle.
What bands do you believe deserve more credit/exposure? There are a lot of great bands out there that are being overshadowed by really talentless people right now. Right now I would have to say PMToday, La Dispute, Asteria, and our label mates Wolves and Machines. They are all extremely talented bands and they play music because they love it and it shows.
Do you have any pre-show rituals? I drink about a gallon of Arizona Green Tea.
What are the band's plans for the year? Our new CD "Filling The Void" comes out May 31st on Capeside Records and we plan on playing shows and touring all summer in support of it.
What is your ultimate goal for the band? I would love for us to be able to live off of our music. Being able to quit my day job and play music full-time is my dream.
I want to say thanks for taking the time to talk to me and if anyone wants to know more about us, check out our facebook page. And feel free to talk to us, we love everyone who takes the time to check us out, so the least we could do is chit chat with you a bit.
10 Questions - The American Scene
Who are you and what do you do in the band? My name is Dave Taylor. I play guitar and sing in The American Scene.
How was the band formed? Matt, Charles and I were sharing a dismal two bedroom apartment in Berkeley, CA that reeked of mold and depression. It got to a point where we were going to have to either clean the apartment or start a band. Did we make the right choice? You tell me.
How would you describe the band's music? We play pop-inflected indie rock. If you went to high school between the years of 2000 and 2010 and spent too much time in your room listening to music, we're probably the band for you.
If someone has never listened to your band, which song would you like them to listen to first? Last Chopper Out Of Saigon!
What is the writing process like? For our EP "By Way Of Introduction" Matt brought songs to the band that he had written acoustically and then we each wrote our own parts to add layers to Matt's songs.
Which Reality TV show would you like to be on? Does anyone remember the reality show "The Mole"? It was hosted by Anderson Cooper! Anyone? Anyone?!
What bands do you believe deserve more credit/exposure? The Story So Far, Build Us Airplanes, Street Light Fire, At The Edge, Second To Last, Handguns and Forever Came Calling to name a few...
Do you have any pre-show rituals? I ritualistically stress out my band mates by taking the longest to set up my equipment.
What are the band's plans for the year? We just released an EP entitled "By Way Of Introduction" on Pure Noise records on March 8, 2011. For the rest of the year we'll be touring as much as possible in order to support our record and not be at home.
What is your ultimate goal for the band? We're taking advantage of what is, in my opinion, an amazing opportunity to play music. Sometimes I feel like I'm really getting away with something and I'd like to see how long I can keep it up for.
