Apa refleksimu mengenai presentasi yang kamu lakukan dua minggu lalu?
Kenji: Aku ingat memulai presentasi tersebut dengan sedikit kekhawatiran. Selain kendala bahasa, aku juga tidak yakin bahwa karya-karyaku akan cocok dengan konteks seni di Yogyakarta. Mungkin akan ada yang bertanya apa karyaku termasuk seni atau bukan. Aku menjadi sedikit tidak percaya diri. Namun begitu presentasi dimulai, kekhawatiranku mulai menghilang. Bahasa tidak menjadi masalah. Audiens dapat memahami presentasiku bahkan tertawa karena beberapa hal-hal lucu yang aku katakan. Hal yang terpenting adalah ternyata karya-karyaku sesuai dengan situasi Yogyakarta. Aku selalu tertarik cerita dari orang-orang biasa. Seseorang yang aku temui sehari-hari dan juga teman-teman terdekatku. Hal ini sesuai dengan Yogyakarta dan jaringan lokalnya yang erat. Khususnya dalam lingkup seni budaya, setiap orang saling mengenal dan saling berbagi praktik masing-masing. Aku jadi memiliki ekspektasi untuk membuat pameran di Yogyakarta.
What's your reflections on your talk, two weeks ago?
Kenji: I remember started the talk with some anxiety. Apart from the language issue, I was not sure that my works will fits the art context in Yogyakarta. Maybe someone would questioned whether my works could be consider as art or not. I lost my confidence. But when the presentation started, my anxiety was starting to disappear. Language was not an issue at all. The audience could understand my presentation, and they even laughed at some of my funny stories. The most important thing was my works really fits into Yogyakarta's context. I have interest on stories from ordinary people. Someone whom I meet everyday, and also my closest friends. It fits with Yogyakarta's strong local network. Especially in arts and culture scene, where everyone know each other and share their practices. Now, I have an expectation to do exhibition in Yogyakarta.

Selama satu stgh bulan periode residensinya, Kenji berkesempatan utk mengeksplorasi perkembangan seni rupa khususnya seniman muda di Yogya. (For 1,5 months, Kenji will explore the development of contemporary art, particularly among young artists in Yogyakarta)
Dlm kesempatan ini, Kenji akan mempresentasikan karya2 lamanya, serta berbagai temuan2nya selama periode residensi dlm proyek Exchange Room. (In this event, Kenji will presents some of his previous works, along with his findings during this residency period.)

Kitamura adlh tmn Kenji sjk kecil. Mrk kuliah seni brsama & lulus brsma juga. Ketika lulus, ke-2nya sama2 tdk tahu apa yg hrs mrk lakukan. (Kitamura is a childhood friend of Kenji. Both of them went to the same art university and graduated together. After graduation, both of them didn't know what to do next.)
Stlh lulus, mrk lama tdk brtemu. Baru2 ini Kitamura menghubungi Kenji & menunjukkan karya2nya. Kenji tdk mengerti apa mksd karya2 Kitamura. (They hadn't meet each other after graduation. Recently, Kitamura contacted Kenji and showed his works. Kenji didn't understand Kitamura's works.)
Kitamura adlh kisah seorg seniman yg bertanya2, apakah yg dibuatnya adlh sebuah karya seni atau bukan, apakah ia seorg seniman atau bukan? (Kitamura is a story of a wandering artist. Is his works an artwork or not? Is he an artist or not?)
Kenji juga menunjukkan karya2 lamanya. Katanya, "Aku membuat karya yang terlihat spt karya seni." (Kenji also show his old works. "I also made works which look like artworks.")
Dulu, karya2 Kenji tdk dipamerkan di galeri atau museum. Ia hny membuat karyanya di studio, memotretnya lalu menunjukkannya pd teman2nya. (In the past, Kenji's work didn't get exhibited in gallery or museum. He only made artworks in studio, took some pictures of the work and showed it to his friends.)
Bagi teman2 Kenji, karyanya menarik, tp tdk spt karya seni. Kenji jg sulit menjlskan apa mksd dr karya2nya, atau knp ia mmbuat karya seni. (For Kenji's friends, his works were interesting, but didn't really look like artworks. Kenji also felt difficult to explain the meaning of his works or why did he make artworks.)
Kenji bertanya2, mengapa sesuatu bisa disebut seni atau bukan seni? Mengapa seseorang bisa dianggap seniman atau bukan seniman? (Kenji was asking himself, "Why something can be consider as an art? Why someone can be consider as an artist?")
Waktu Kenji mengunjungi Jogja, seorang teman dr Jepang mengiriminya email. Katanya Kenji harus menemui seorg seniman muda bernama "Mbak M". (When Kenji was visiting Jogja, he got an email from one of his friends in Japan. This friend suggested Kenji to meet a young artist whose name is "Miss M".)
Temannya agak lupa siapa nama asli Mbak M dan spt apa rupanya. Tapi katanya Mbak M adlh seniman yang sering membuat karya di jalanan Yogya. (His friend didn't remember the face of Miss M or her real name. But Miss M is an artist who made many works on the street of Jogja.)
Sepertinya, dr ciri2 yg diberikan teman Kenji, ini slh satu karya Mbak M yg Kenji temukan di jalanan pic.twitter.com/x3fZflWK (Based on his friend's description, this looks like Miss M's work which Kenji found in the street.)
Igawa & Mbak M adlh tokoh2 rekaan Kenji. Menciptakan tokoh fiksi adlh modus berkarya Kenji. Ia menciptakan artefak2 seolah tokoh itu ada. (Igawa and Miss M are characters which manufactured by Kenji. The production of fictional character is Kenji's method. He created some artefacts to support the existance of these characters.)
Dgn mencipt. tokoh rekaan, Kenji memunculkan peran orang ke-3 sbg subjek dlm komunikasi 2 arah antara ia dgn audiens. (By creating fictional characters, Kenji also produced the third person as subject in a communication process between him and the audience.)
Sementara, biasanya karya seni hanya memunculkan komunikasi 1 arah, di mana seniman bicara dan audiens "membacanya". (Meanwhile, artworks only produced one way communication where involved artist as the speaker and audience as the reader.)
Mengapa Kenji tertarik dengan modus berkarya seperti ini, dan mengapa ia memilih Kitamura atau Mbak M sbg subjek karya2nya? (Why Kenji interested in this kind of method? Why he chose Kitamura and Miss M as subject on his works?)
Apkh modus ini digunakan krn ada ketakutan dr Kenji bhw org tdk dpt memahami karyanya tanpa tahu kisah hidupnya? (Is this method used by Kenji because there are certain doubt that everyone won't understand the work without the artist's stories?)
Ada juga pertanyaan soal authorship (kepengarangan), jika Kenji "hanya" menceritakan karya orang lain, maka dimana perannya sbg pencipta? (There's also question about authorship, if Kenji "only" told stories about other person, then where's his role as the creator?)
Sebagai audiens, kita seperti berada dalam ambiguitas antara fakta dan fiksi ketika melihat karya2 Kenji. (As audience in Kenji's works, we existed in the ambiguity between facts and fictions.)
Bagi Kenji karyanya adlh sebuah karya performans yg juga menggabungkan unsur video, foto dan instalasi. (For Kenji, his works is a form of performance which combine video, photo and instalation.)
Performativitas merupakan unsur yang penting dalam karya2 Kenji. (Performativity is an important aspect in Kenji's works.)

Selama satu setengah bulan, Kenji Ide berkesempatan mengunjungi Yogyakarta untuk mengeksplorasi perkembangan seni kontemporer khususnya di kalangan seniman muda. Dalam kesempatan ini, Kenji akan mempresentasikan karya-karya terdahulu, serta berbagai pertanyaan yang muncul di tengah periode residensinya bersama proyek Exchange Room, di KUNCI. Program residensi ini merupakan hasil kerjasama antara KUNCI Cultural Studies Center dan Koganecho Art Management (Yokohama, Jepang).
Kenji Ide lahir di Kanagawa, Jepang, tahun 1981. Ia menyelesaikan studinya di bidang seni lukis tahun 2006 di Tama Art University. Exchange Room adalah proyek KUNCI yang menawarkan ruang terbuka untuk kolaborasi antara individu dari berbagai latar belakang dan minat lintas-disiplin. Proyek ini ditujukan untuk mendorong perjumpaan kreatif antar pihak-pihak tersebut melalui percakapan terfokus, kerja jaringan taktis, dan aksi yang terarah.

For one and a half months, Kenji Ide has the opportunity to visit Yogyakarta to explore the development of contemporary art, particularly among young artists. In this event, Kenji will share some of his previous works and the emerging questions which he had during his residency period with Exchange Room project, in KUNCI. This residency program is a joint cooperation between KUNCI Cultural Studies Center and Koganecho Art Management (Yokohama, Japan).
Kenji Ide was born in Kanagawa, Japan. He completed his study in painting in 2006, at the Tama Art University. Exchange Room is KUNCI’s project which offers an open space designed for living between people with interdisciplinary background and interests. This project aims at endorsing creative encounters through focused conversations, tactical networking and purposive actions.

KUNCI Cultural Studies Center invites you to a public discussion with Exchange Room guest, Simon Kentgens. In this occasion he will share some of the insights during his stay in Yogyakarta for the past one month, where he has made observations, mainly through archives research in IVAA, series of focused conversations and looking around, about genealogies of ideas in arts practices and speculations of common culture in local art scenes.The preliminary research project revolves around issues of copying and its limits when approached through the conventional framing of copyright, authorship, and transactional interests. It aims at leveraging notions of copying into the commons, sharing culture, affinity actions and hybridity in contemporary arts practices. This exploration is guided by several questions, such as: what does it mean to copy in a context where sharing culture is everywhere ? How do structures of tradition and modernity imbued forms of knowledge-circulation? Is common a common thing of everyday lives, in the arts? How does this conceptualization contribute to the understanding of a generation of art practices?
Simon tries to explore these subject matters in a context where there is free movement of cultural artefacts within a prominent copy-culture, wide non-legal distribution networks (such as piracy), and blurred boundaries between private and public owner-/authorship, such as in Indonesia. These operate as modes that enable knowledge production in space dominated by a scarcity of access to such resources and a strong tradition of reproduction.
Simon Kentgens (http://www.simonkentgens.com/) is an artist based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. He has participated in several exhibitions within Europe and beyond. Before his cooperation with KUNCI he did residencies in China and Turkey where he explored the notions of copying and common ideas in their local contexts. Together with Berlin based artist Michiel Huijben, he is co-founder of the art bloghttp://www.pietmondriaan.com/ , in which, by playfully connecting different works, he searches for common correlations and connections within contemporary art.

KUNCI Cultural Studies Center mengundang Anda ke diskusi publik dengan tamu Exchange Room, Simon Kentgens. Dalam kesempatan ini ia akan berbagi beberapa cerapannya selama tinggal di Yogyakarta selama sebulan terakhir, dari amatannya atas silsilah gagasan dalam praktik seni dan spekulasi tentang budaya bersama dalam dunia seni lokal, melalui riset arsip, serangkaian pembicaraan terfokus dan melihat-lihat.
Riset awal ini berkisar pada isu-isu meng-kopi dan batas-batasnya ketika didekati melalui bingkai konvensional hak cipta, kepengarangan, dan kepentingan transaksional. Hal ini bertujuan untuk memanfaatkan gagasan menyalin ke dalam commons, budaya berbagi, tindakan bersama dan hibriditas dalam praktik seni kontemporer. Eksplorasi ini dipandu oleh beberapa pertanyaan, seperti: apa artinya meng-kopi dalam konteks di mana budaya berbagi ada dimana-mana? Bagaimana struktur tradisi dan modernitas turut membentuk sirkulasi pengetahuan? Apakah commons hal yang lazim ditemukan dalam kehidupan sehari-hari, dalam seni? Bagaimana konsep ini berkontribusi pada pemahaman atas satu generasi praktik kesenian?
Simon mencoba untuk mengeksplorasi perkara ini dalam konteks di mana artefak budaya bergerak bebas dalam maraknya budaya meng-kopi, jaringan distribusi non-legal (seperti pembajakan) yang luas, dan kaburnya batas-batas antara pemilikan privat dan publik, seperti di Indonesia. Operasi moda-moda ini lah yang selama ini memungkinkan produksi pengetahuan ketika ruang yang ada didominasi oleh kelangkaan akses ke sumber daya pengetahuan dan tradisi reproduksi yang kuat.

Exchange Room is KUNCI’s most recent project which offers an open space designed for collaborative living between people with interdisciplinary background and interests. This project aims at endorsing creative encounters through focused conversations, tactical networking, and purposive actions. To do this, aside from provisions of lodgings and various facilities (ranging from library, office space to a venue for hosting workshops and talks), a tactical liaison whose task is assisting the project participant in attaining local perspectives as well as getting one in touch with relevant resources and supports, will also be provided by request
The rooms are available for rents and residency stays with rate differences applied for non-funded and funded guests, be it artists, researchers and cultural practitioners alike . The rental charge will go directly to the space maintenance as well as to the sustainability of the project.

Kamar-kamar yang ada ini dapat disewa dan digunakan sebagai tempat menginap dan/atau residensi dengan harga yang berbeda untuk partisipan yang didanai dan tidak; baik mereka seniman, peneliti atau penggiat budaya lainnya.
