(Now, now, Atmey. Just be carefully circumspect in what you reveal, and you should be fine. Hopefully, if you tell just enough, she won’t care to look further into it and find out things she really shouldn’t.)
“Hmm. Frankly, I’m surprised you haven’t heard of the case. It was a story much discussed in all sorts of media. Regardless, I will tell you what I know.”
“Before I discuss the specifics of how Sir Lawyer and I met, it is beyond vital that I give you the proper preface, so allow me to begin at the beginning. Some months ago, a plague struck this great city. It ravaged the city, and brought it to its very knees. This plague was the fiend they called Mask DeMasque.”
He began to immerse himself in his storytelling as he was apt to do, complete with dramatic inflections and impactful gesticulations.
“The dastardly DeMasque was a thief who cleverly plundered great antiques and artifacts from museums and exhibits throughout the city. He wrought terror and fear amongst the citizenry with his vile larcenies. His evil escapades, for some time, were the most continuously discussed topics in Los Angeles. People cried in fear, ‘Where will this demon strike next?’, ‘Will we be safe with this prowler creeping among us?’, or ‘If the police cannot stop this vile villain, then who will?!”
“But, fear not, Lady Skye! Although the city had been plunged into darkness and despair due to the deceitful doings of the daring DeMasque, one courageous hero stood up and shouted proudly that he would not allow such verminous villainy to continue unabated! And do you know who that man was?”
He hoped Lana would be a bit more receptive to his question than the last lady he told his story to. That woman still irked the Ace.
Mask deMasque. Lana recognized the name, even though she didn't know many deeper details. The thief had been on news everywhere at times, and it was nearly impossible not to hear about him at least a bit. Lana didn't want to interrupt the man as he seemed to be really deep into his story. "Would that person be you?", she then asked and smiled. Of course he was talking about himself, no doubt about that, but Lana wanted to keep the conversation going.
“Oh, I see. He must have been a joy to work with then. You both are intelligent, and able people, after all.”
“How he acted? As I said before, he was able to prove my innocence and kept me from going to jail for a long time, when he really had no reason to. In fact, I had even accused him of that murder before I fell under suspicion rather hastily. He could have left me to the wolves, but instead, he saved me.”
“And, well, he was very polite and thoughtful. All things considered, he was quite the gentleman.”
Then her thoughts turned to that one comment he had given about her personally designed suitcases. To be honest, it still hurt her feelings a bit even to this point. It just shows that sometimes the truth isn’t always pleasant, but it’s best for it to be revealed.
“Well, for the most part, at least…” she muttered as her voice trailed off.
Lana listened the woman and sometimes nodded slightly to show she was indeed listening. She tried to imagine the scenario inside her head, even though she didn't really know the details of the crime scene. However, she was somewhat able to form a picture of Edgeworth's actions.
"That's really nice to hear. Thank you for telling". She crossed her arms and smirked: "Just between us; Back in my days as the chief prosecutor, I would have expected a slightly different description. It's nice to know he has been making progress with his behavior during investigations"
The detective was sure she heard Rhoda muttering like “...for the most part, at least…”. Curiosity took her over, and she couldn't help but try to press Rhoda a bit about this. "For the most part?" "What do you mean?" Lana really hoped she wouldn't need to change her positive thoughts about Edgeworth now.
“Yes, I suppose so. And really, it’s all thanks to Mr. Edgeworth! He’s really very intelligent and noble. Have you met him in your work as a detective, perhaps?”
She wasn’t exactly happy yet, but she did cheer up a bit when talking about Edgeworth.
“Indeed. I personally would never commit murder. It’s… a terrible act. To take someone’s life purposefully is just something I could never support.”
"That he certainly is", she replied and smiled. During all these years, Edgeworth had changed a lot. From a rude novice to a gentleman he is today... Maybe his social skills were still not that great, but he had changed a lot and to better. Suddenly she felt herself really old. "Of course. And when I became the chief prosecutor, we were dealing with each other quite often because of our positions in Prosecutor's Office." "Say, how was he acting during that case?". It had been a long time since Lana had an opportunity to see Miles in the work, and she was eager to learn how he did outside the Court as well.
Her relationship with Miles wasn't as deep as Mia's mentor-relationship was with Phoenix, but somehow, Lana still felt responsible of him. Even after she wasn't officially his supervisor, every time Edgeworth did something good, Lana was proud of him.
“I see. ‘Tis a shame, I’d say. To think even the hallowed institution of law enforcement can be twisted and perverted by those with nefarious intents.”
Her sudden tenseness was noted by Atmey. She was practically gnawing her thumb off. Perhaps there was more to this than what he thought. Of course, he knew of her trial, but he did not know of her other nasty bits of her past.
“Thank you for the suggestion, my dear Skye. Once I am alone, I may very well look into that. I’d be most curious to learn just who allowed such a travesty to take place”
And suddenly, when the topic switched to Phoenix Wright, he became the tense one. He did not want to make it obvious, but it was difficult doing so. For you see, although he held little grudge against Phoenix as a person, he couldn’t help but to feel bitter when considering what he did to him.
“Oh yes, I’m very well-acquainted with Sir Lawyer, and his… unique, as you call them, methods.”
Seeking not to seem suspicious, he tried to anticipate her next question in advance.
“We met once on a particular case we both had a part in, you see.”
There. Of course, he was careful in what he revealed, but as of yet, he had not lied at all. He waited to see if she would press more on the subject.
"Oh, so you know him?". Of course everyone knew him in a way or another, but it sounded like Atmey knew him from more than just news. And indeed, he mentioned something about a case. Lana was curious to know, and even more, she was eager to change the topic from forging to something very else. This was a golden opportunity to do so. "A case, you say? May I ask what kind of case that was?"

“I see. I suppose you would know best, given your former position. I was merely making an informed observation based off what I have heard personally. Though, if I may ask, if Sir Edgeworth did not actually forge the evidence he used, then who was it? I had failed to consider that the Prosecutor’s office might be so corrupt as to where he would be given forged evidence to use as the real article.”
“I will admit, however, there is reason to believe he has reformed. I have heard little negative rumors regarding him in years now. Perhaps it was that attorney who helped rehabilitate him. I wish him the best, regardless.”
“Though… would that attorney happen to be a Mr. Phoenix Wright?”
He was not entirely sure, but he did his research, and he seemed to recall that Miles Edgeworth and Phoenix Wright had several courtroom duels with one another. Given what he, himself, knew about that lawyer, then the conclusion he reached made perfect sense to him.
Lana wasn't expecting a question like that, even though it should have been able to predict. By now Lana should have learnt to be more careful with what she says, because Atmey's thirst of knowledge, or maybe just curiosity, made him ask even more questions if there was anything to clarify. "Well... The ones behind all the forging have gotten their punishment. Prosecutor's office doesn't take such a things lightly, and they certainly don't allow behavior like that. It just happened in secret, so no-one was aware of that - and if they suspected something, they didn't have much evidence". She could have just said directly she was one of those corrupted people, but all this talk about her past started to make her feel uncomfortable. "I'm sure there are articles about that, in case you're interested to read more" Good thing the current topic started to change already.
"Yes, I'm talking about Mr. Wright", she replied and smiled a little, brushing off the negative thoughts regarding the previous topic. "Maybe he is not quite as his mentor, but he really has potential - even though his techniques in the court are... How should I put it?" "Unique may be the right word, yes." Lana was aware Mia's technique in the court was, is, bluffing as well, but Wright certainly had his own style. To Lana, it looked unprofessional, but seeing it in action made her admit it was still effective.
“…would otherwise have gone undiscovered.”

Impressed Lana.
Lana: Mia did a good job mentoring you. I'm rather jealous...
Phoenix: !
Lana: It seems Edgeworth was right.
Phoenix: Edgeworth...?
Lana: Once you're convinced you know something, no one can persuade you otherwise.
Lana: "Thick headed" is the term he used, I believe.

“Hmm… well, perhaps. Then again, many a rumor floated around Sir Edgeworth in his younger years as Von Karma’s pupil. Forged evidence, illegal searches, forced testimonies, that sort of thing. Though, I suppose as Ex-Chief Prosecutor, you would know very well about that. But allow me to say that he was not called the “Demon Attorney” for his charming demeanor. Admittedly, I have not heard such things as of late, so it’s possible he has reformed his ways after that nasty trial he was put on.”
“As for Lady Von Karma, who can say? I’m merely saying that if she shares the fanatical obsession with perfection, then it’s possible she too will resort to less than legal measures. If not now, then perhaps in the future. I suppose I shouldn’t judge, but I’m merely basing my observation off past knowledge and experiences. Let’s hope she will remain on the path of righteousness.”
“Hmm… Understandable, I suppose. Complacency is rarely a good thing, so kudos to you for attempting to carve a better path for yourself. As I said, I wish you the best in that future endeavor.”
"You're correct, but these were merely rumors. Well, except for the one about using forged evidence. However, it wasn't Edgeworth who forged it in the first hand. One could blame him for not being careful enough with his evidence and not checking it properly, but he was still young back then, and he trusted his partners. He had no "need" to make sure the evidence was indeed legal. Maybe a bit foolish, but I think it's perfectly understandable"
"Edgeworth was indeed not the subtlest prosecutor - nor person - there was, but calling him a "Demon" was maybe a bit too much", Lana continued, smiling a bit. Maybe it was only her, but Lana felt like she had watched after him for the time she was a chief prosecutor. Maybe it was the quilt of forging the evidence he used, or maybe she really cared about him and was interested to see him improve? Even Lana herself wasnt' certain.
"But after he got against this one defense attorney, he has started to change - and for the better, I think. Those two... They're both after the truth, and it makes them really effective in the courtroom. And what comes to Ms. von Karma, I'm sure the change of Edgeworth will affect to her as well in some level"

Wow, she’s beautiful…
“Oh um, my name is Sumi Seta… I’m just a student.”
Even though this woman had the same occupation as her aunt, she was quite different from her (mostly appearance wise). And that accent… could she be foreign?
Lana scrutinized the girl in front of her. She seemed to be around Ema's age - maybe a bit older. Her white blades of hair gave a somewhat girly impression of her. Her outfit looked a bit foreign, though. Maybe she wasn't from the same place as Lana? She hadn't much knowledge about the school uniforms in other countries, but Lana would have guessed Asian country. "Nice to meet you, miss Seta" "So you're a student? I suppose you're studying from somewhere else than Los Angeles?

"Lana Skye, detective. Is there something I can help you with?", she asked with a rather polite tone.
Luke had to admit that she had a point there. If she was referring to whom Luke thought she was, then he had to admit, Lana was nowhere near that level of perfectionism.
“Ah, yes, the legendary Von Karma line of prosecutors, right? They certainly strive for perfection, and perhaps all together too far in pursuit of that goal.”
“As a former prosecutor yourself, I’m sure you know about Manfred Von Karma and all of his nefarious ill-doings. And that daughter of his? I wouldn’t be surprised if she fell into that very same path of vile villainy in pursuit of an imaginary ideal. It is one thing to be the best person you can be, but to strive to be absolutely flawless is misguided at best, and downright delusional at worst.”
As a private detective, and a seeker of knowledge, knowing of one of the most famous prosecuting families in the world was not so hard to believe as one might think. He considered it only common sense to have a cursory idea of many of the law enforcing officials of the area where he worked. That’s also why he knew of the good Lady Skye’s career as a prosecutor beforehand.
“Are you now? That’s admirable enough, I suppose. Being relegated to being a mere detective when you used to wield the almighty power of a prosecutor must be demoralizing. I do hope that goes well for you, Lady Skye.”
(Though, I have my doubts a woman who was tried for murder, and found guilty for the crimes of forging and covering up vital evidence, has much chance of regaining a position as a prosecutor, no matter how “trustworthy” she may prove herself.)
""Yes, I'm talking about von Karmas", she replied but didn't want to show any opinions towards the matter. Maybe it was a bit overdone, though.
"And yes, I'm certain almost everyone knows about Mr. von Karma and how his career ended. It was on the news everywhere and both Prosecutor's office and Police Force were having quite a hassle because of that. But I'm not sure about her daughter. I mean, Miles Edgeworth was raised by Mr. von Karma as well, and just look at him: He is the pride of prosecutor's office yet he isn't doing anything illegal. I'm certain Ms. von Karma isn't going to do the same as her father"
Lana was not really familiar with Franziska von Karma, but naturally they knew each other trough work. But Lana wanted to believe such a promising young prosecutor would end up being like her father. Children didn't want to repeat their parents' mistakes.
"Well, being a detective isn't that bad. I enjoy the work but as long as there is something to strive after, I don't want to settle completely down, so to say". It wasn't sure she would change professions, but it didn't hold her back. She wanted to try her best and if it wasn't enough, then she would have at least tried. It would be understandable if they didn't want her back. Not after all problems she had caused thanks to her trial a few years ago.
“Well, I’d say that’s the dictionary definition of a perfectionist. Someone who strives to be the best they can be and does not falter from that path. It’s admirable, as I said, to have that drive to succeed and shine resplendently against the mediocre muck of the average man. Trust me, I meant it wholly as a compliment.”
“You, too, are correct in your deduction. Perhaps you could be an Ace Detective one day. I was born to be the best person that I could be. Of course, for a man of my brilliance, excellence comes more naturally to me than most, but that doesn’t mean I fail to stay committed to all of my endeavors.”
"Working as a chief prosecutor, I have met all sort of people. I was also familiar with a person obsessed to perfection and I can certainly say, that compared to them, I'm far from perfectionist", she laughed. Maybe not exactly an "Ace", but back in days, Lana used to be really high-ranked and respected detective. Somewhat respected she still was, but not really high on status-ladder. However, she felt like it wasn't necessary to say that. She didn't really need to "prove" anything to that man. "Who knows? But rather than a detective, I would love to be a prosecutor again. Not exactly a chief, but still a prosecutor" Lana continued, but then she remembered most people would see it as a nothing but a dream. But for Lana, it there was a little possibility to continue as a prosecutor. In some countries that would have been impossible, but fortunately for her, laws here were a bit different.
"If I turn out to be successful and trustworthy as detective, I have an opportunity to work under prosecutor's office again"
