People watch tragedies on purpose. People watch stories about hope on purpose. Pulling the rug on the narrative promise of your story and switching tracks isn’t clever or interesting, it’s just lying about the genre.

If Midsummer Night’s Dream ended with everyone brutally dying, I’d feel kind of betrayed. If Macbeth ended with everyone getting happily married, I’d also feel kind of betrayed.

Tony’s death was a result of two reasons:

Shock value, in order to meet the pressures of High Stakes.

The idea that the only way to “rest” if you suffer from mental illness, e.g. PTSD, depression, anxiety, is to die. “Writers” or people who call themselves as such, don’t know how to handle mental illnesses and are unable to think that there is a chance of recovery because it’s simply “too much”. Therefore, “putting them out of their misery” seems to be the only option.

To which I say, fuck you. I have suffered major depression to the point of acting suicidal. I have friends who have been through trauma. If our lives were on the hands of these writers, they would’ve killed us.

I repeat, if our lives were on the hands of these writers, they would’ve killed us.

Neither of these two reasons fit the narrative. Death in fiction is only necessary when it leads to a chain of events that are supposed to happen OR were destined from the beginning to die (see, Captain America, and Hodor from Game of Thrones because I’m still fucked up over how devastating and awesome his arc was).

And if they don’t serve this narrative, you have failed in fulfilling a satisfying end to a character arc and as a writer overall.

To add to his death, Morgan Stark’s existence is a plot device. Let’s put aside the fact that MCU!Pepper has never shown an interest in wanting kids. Let’s put aside the fact that Pepper and Tony are a couple in their fifties, focused on their jobs and looking to semi-retire, consider starting over with a baby. Let’s put aside the fact that Hollywood thinks every couple should have kids and white picket fence life.

Morgan was created for two reasons only:

To add to the tragedy of Tony’s death, as if it wouldn’t already be tragic enough. It plays into the leaving a child behind trope. This trope is only done well for a character that’s supposed to die in the beginning. Hell, this trope doesn’t even need death, (see Once Upon A Time).

So that Tony would have a glimpse of happiness* before the writers feel satisfied in killing him off. I.e. I guess he’s suffered a lot, maybe we should just give him a kid to fill that void for just a brief period. I guess…five years? Yeah, that’s enough. There. Now we can kill him.

Firstly, never have kids just to fill a void. Never think about having kids when your life has fallen apart. That’s not starting over, that’s acting reckless.

*Secondly, that “happiness” was lived in a bleak world of the decimated aftermath, where people won’t be able to recover for hundreds of years, and Tony had been living under insurmountable guilt for being unable to save it and endless grief for the boy he saw as a son. You honestly expect me to believe him isolating himself in a cabin while the rest of the world is still suffering, filled with guilt and sorrow, is him being truly happy? Really?

Some would say there’s a third reason: Morgan is keeping Tony back from jumping into the world of Avenging again or risk losing her. To which I say nay, because that had been set up from the beginning, the moment Tony ripped his “heart” from his chest and shoved it into Steve’s hands. He was done. And he wouldn’t want to jump back because he couldn’t fall into the lull of false hope. We didn’t need a Morgan for that. We didn’t need Morgan for any of this.

And all of it happened to kill off a character that was not ready to be killed off.

Annnd look at that. They were going to bring him back for cameos anyway.

More evidence that they only wanted to kill him off to stick it to the fans who rightfully predicted that Cap’s journey was supposed to come to an end and not Tony’s, as well as to needlessly meet those ridiculous “High Stakes” I mentioned in the beginning of my post. The only reason for his death was to “shock”. Adding “rest because of mental trauma” was just salt rubbing the wound.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again:

Tony Stark was not ready to be killed off.
