CHARACTER HISTORY

Elijah grew up with parents who only wanted the best for him. His mother worked long shifts at the local hotel as a housekeeper. Most weekends were spent working on cars at the auto shop, one that his grandfather left them in his will, and from a young age Eli took advantage of learning everything he could to follow in their footsteps. They didn’t have the money to put him through college and once he was able to understand that, he was taking every chance he could to skip classes. He was able to use both of his parents' night shifts as an excuse to sneak into clubs, Elijah knew his future was already mapped out and didn’t see why he should bother stressing when he could have fun instead. 

Hookups and infatuation came easily with the bad boy reputation, but it wasn’t until he met his ex that he finally wanted to settle down with someone. He fell harder than he planned, sneaking out of classrooms to meet her in the bathroom and causing chaos around every corner. It became clear that her family didn’t like him from the very beginning, Elijah not having enough money to be deemed worthy of her attention by their standards. For a while they ignored it and continued enjoying the ride of each other’s company. He was serious about her, spending his life savings to purchase a diamond protected by its velvet box, then everything changed. 

His girlfriend was given an ultimatum, tasked to end things with him so her pockets wouldn’t run dry and that’s exactly what she did. 

Now with the ring sold off to the pawn shop, he was able to finally think about getting his shit together — not for anyone but himself. He decided that once he was able to take over the family business he wanted to be able to run it and has been taking night classes at a local college ever since.

It might have surprised some people to see Linc walking the grounds of a carnival, but it was technically right up his alley. Not even the pumpkin spiced everything could deter him.

Or wipe off that faint smile on his lips as he and Elijah carried on through the various smells of what the vendors were cooking up.

“I saw a sign for pumpkin beer.”

Without missing a beat he flicked a cigarette to his lips and let his eyes roam a little in search of the woman who invaded his thoughts far too much.

“I’ll pay you a hundred dollars to drink it,” Linc offered his friend.

“Pumpkin beer?” He questioned trying to imagine what that’d taste like. As they continued to walk he saw the sign marking where they could buy some, his friend’s words prompting a fun challenge. “One hundred dollars to drink it or finish it…two different things there man.” He answer didn’t matter much to Elijah at that point, his mind was already committed either way.

“I have my talents. Not sure if navigation is one of them.” She relied on her GPS a lot and the guidance of someone else. It was why she preferred the passenger seat, on top of being able to control the music and scroll through tik tok. “Snacks are required at all times of day and definitely before heading out. I’ve seen some weird candy apples with different things stuck to them. Maybe we can ask them to cut it in half cause they’re massive. Anything catch your eye since you got here?”

“How about I navigate and you keep your eyes on anything that looks out of the ordinary?” Elijah wasn’t a stranger to relying on his instincts himself, but in the dark he was glad to take whatever help was thrown his way. “Candy apples are a good start, if they can’t cut it though we’ll have to act like those people who share milkshakes and bite on our chosen half of the apple.” He teased, shaking his head before looking over at other food signs. “There should be something fried, that’s something we can always count on. You think they’ll have pizza?”

All in all, she had no grudge against him because she was just happy to see him and be able to spend a bit of time with him. “You want me to be the extra set of eyes? You know those are famous last words and I’m going to be telling you once they find us thirty days later that you’re to blame because you put me and my eyes in charge.”

“I know, I wasn’t expecting it either.” Elijah said playfully before offering her a smile. “Am I not supposed to trust you? Come on, give yourself more credit.” He walked with her over to the entrance, wondering just how much he’d have to maneuver to get them out in one piece. “Thirty days? You think we should grab some snacks before heading in?”

He looked good, but Mari couldn’t exactly say that to Elijah’s face without perishing on the spot.

Instead, a soft hum built in her throat. “Not really.” Her mouth curved with the tease of a smile. “Even if you’ve never struck me as the stuffy suit and tie type, it’s not a bad look on you.” Not bad at all. She’d always considered him unfairly attractive in any state; four years apart hadn’t changed that.

“Nowadays I’m all for embracing whims and wants, though—” boldly, the gave the tie around his neck a gentle tug until it loosened itself from its tucked in spot beneath his jacket— “so if you wanna get out of this suit who’s really stopping you?” It wasn’t meant to sound suggestive but… okay. Even she had to admit it did. 

Flushed and forced to clear her throat, Mari gestured with her chin toward the doors leading out into the rest of the ship. “Pretty sure the jacuzzi’s still going if you wanna make an escape from this bullshit.”

“Yeah? At least I’ve got your seal of approval.” The words felt weird leaving his mouth, Elijah hadn’t given the woman a compliment in what felt like forever, but it was easy to allow himself fall back into old habits. “Stuffy and suit aren’t really words I’d use to describe myself...it’s too proper.”

An eyebrow raised as her words, a little taken back by her boldness to grab onto him like that. “I’ll tell you a little secret...I’ve been dying to get out of this suit since before I even put it on.” Eli’s eyes glanced down at her hands, placing his on top to fully release himself from the tie that had been holding him hostage all night. “What’s on the tops of yours wants list right now?”

The conversation between the two had gotten more suggestive than he realized, now they were at the point where they couldn’t take back things that were already said — he didn’t really mind. “It sounds better and better actually, do you want to join me?”

Boyd’s brow raised in surprise at the revelation. Granted, he still kept in touch with both Elijah and Mari, but he knew better than to mention one to the other. He’d had no idea Mari was interested in… re-establishing contact, though admittedly he’d been a little too caught up in his own shit to even ask. “Fuuuck,” he groaned in sympathy. “Something in the water, eh? What’d she say?”

Elijah was finding it hard to get the memory out of his mind, though this time around it didn’t sound as bad of an idea. Mari had decided to waltz back into his shop and since then she’d been a reoccurring thought. “Must be, what are the odds both of our exes decided to jump back into our lives at the same time?” He questioned with a shake of his head, it’s like the two of them communicated. “She brought me a box of random shit I’d left behind at her place...years ago.” He raised an eyebrow. “Randomly going through boxes...do you buy that?”

“That’s fascinating.” Mari murmured with the bare minimum amount of enthusiasm. “You must be very proud.” And she very bored, although that felt like a sentiment better kept to herself.

These sorts of parties were all the same. Full of self-important people who only wanted to look good for the sake of charity without putting in any of the hard work. The kind who wanted to boast about how much they’d contributed when, in fact, they’d still managed to gain.

She wasn’t sure how much more boasting she could take.

Except just when she was at her limit - when she was two seconds from making an ass out of herself by just walking away when her mother’s friend, Catherine, was mid-sentence - he appeared.

“I’m so sorry, but will you excuse me?” Instinct compelled Mari to step closer and leave her previous ‘company’ behind, but at least now she had an actual reason to soothe over the slight. When she was but a foot away from Elijah she paused. A tentative smile dared to dance across her face.

“I didn’t expect to see you here tonight.” Yet if she were being honest it was a pleasant surprise. “Be honest— was it the massive hot tub and free drinks? ‘Cause those are the only things that sold me.”

“Honestly, I’m surprised to see me here tonight as well.” He responded with a smile. Spending a night out on a  boat wasn’t his typical scene, adding in the formal clothing really prompted the man to be out of his element. “All this time and you still know me so well, I’ve been dying to get out of this suit and feel the water.” Elijah explained with a laugh, trying not to get lost on how easy things still seemed to be. They agreed, nothing out of character, but there had been so much time to pass between them that it took form like stepping onto another planet.

“Okay, sounds good, man,” he nodded. “No funny business while I’m gone!” Not that he was likely to notice — he wasn’t lying when he said he was terrible at pool. He was really only here for the company.

Coming back with a pitcher and two cups in tow, he set them up on the rim of the table, pouring them out and holding out one for Elijah. “So what have you been up to?” he asked, ready to get into the part of the evening the involved catching up and not getting his ass beat miserably.

“I wouldn’t — I don’t need any funny business unless I’m giving you the upper hand.” Elijah teased, laughing a bit as his friend went to retrieve their first rounds of beer. If anything he’d rig the game more in Boyd’s favor, or caring if he won or lost as long as he prolonged having to set up the balls again.

He set his cue to the side, taking the filled cup from his friend and bringing it to his lips. “The shop has been busy lately, but you’ll never guess who stopped by.” He scoffed a bit, relieving the memory still in disbelief. “I ran into Mari...or rather she ran into me.”

Fall was one of Veronica’s favorite times of the year. The leaves changing, the fashion, the weather, the special moments during this time. It was one of the few things she held on to when she would feel at her worst. Maybe it’s because of the holidays or her birthday but fall was almost like her safety zone. Hearing someone approach her the bench she was on, she turned. “Hey stranger, long time no see. You aren’t avoiding me are you?” She said trying to sound cheerful.

Elijah was taken off guard, wondering if he’d ever met the woman before now as she spoke. There was too many people to count that came in and out of the shop, more times than not it was his customers that were able to recognize him first. “Have we met before?” He questioned before shaking his head. “Sorry if we have, remembering people I’ve seen once or twice has never been my strong suit.”
