hey guys, in case you didn’t know what’s happening in lebanon right now, here is some information i’ve gathered from twitter threads and articles to help spread the word.
On August 4th there was a massive explosion that happened at the sea port of Beirut that left at least 135 people dead and 5,000 injured.
The explosion on Tuesday at Beirut’s port released a shockwave which caused widespread damage to buildings, shattering windows in different parts of the city. The cause of the blast was not immediately clear. After a few hours, their PM said that 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate (a highly explosive material used in fertilizers and bombs) was being stored for six years at a port warehouse without safety meassures. The explosion damaged buildings across the city, homes as far as 10,400 kilometers away were damaged according to witnesses, and even people on the distant island of Cyprus felt the blast, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
The port was completely damaged. All the food, basic supplies needed for them to survive used to come through this port. There are 2 other ports in Lebanon (tripoli & saida) but they’re really small compared to the dimension of what was the port of Beirut and they won’t be enough to meet the country’s basic needs.
Lebanese authorities said hundreds of people are still missing, including children, and that 300,000 people have been displaced from their homes. Relatives of the missing are scouring hospitals looking for their loved ones.
Four hospitals are out of service because of damage from the explosion and the rest of them are full. There’s no electricity so some doctors are treating patients with phone flashlights; thousands of people were injured. this is how one of the hospitals looks right now.
The lebanese citizens are saying that petitions are useless but donating DOES WORK. I’m not lebanese myself but I’m sure every bit of help is appreciated, so please donate if you can. I’ll leave some links below.

Lastly, if you’re lebanese and reading this: please stay safe. if your ears are ringing and hurt from the blast, avoid your phone/loud music because that will irritate you more; also try not to drink like tea or coffee or things with caffeine because those tend to cause headaches and please try and stay hydrated if you can (if you’re in shock it can and will make you dizzy and tired and it’s easy to get dehydrated). If you’re going out, please please please wear a mask/wet cloth as the air might still be toxic. And if you’re feeling anxious, here are some breathing exercises that might calm you down.
