One thing that makes me really happy about my garden is that the summer I moved in it was a completely barren little courtyard apart from some weeds, but I didn’t see any wildlife in it apart from the occasional rat
2 years later and so far this summer I’ve already seen some songbirds flying in (despite the massive owl sculpture my neighbours have up as a bird deterrent, for some reason).
I’ve also seen a really pretty red butterfly and plenty of bees and native pollinators. I haven’t seen any honey bees yet this year (there were one or 2 last summer) but I know some will visit because there is a hive on top of the university building a little distance away.
I set up a pond in the shadiest spot this winter. It looks a bit grimy now but I’m hoping it will regulate itself. It’s made out of an old aquarium, so I know there’s some good bacteria and small wildlife in there already, plus a few hardy aquarium plants, so I’m hoping the algae will die back eventually. It’s got rocks in it so any wildlife can climb out and bees can water there.

It’s not long until I have to move out and I’m *technically* supposed to remove the garden when I go. Butttt I don’t think I will. I think it’s a net positive for the local wildlife even if the next tenant doesn’t manage the beds, they will just grow wildflowers in them. I might not get my deposit back but I think I’m okay with that. My landlord hasn’t mentioned it yet so I’m hoping it will be ok. It’s way nicer like this than a barren courtyard anyway. I only hope my carrots and sunflowers are done by the time I move out because I invested all my sunflower seeds into the beds this year 😬
