(...) “You’re right. I cannot make you do anything, Ash. I will not make you do anything.” He sits up better on the edge of the desk and calmly looks at her. Other authority might cross their arms in an upset at her rebellion but Apollo just keeps his body language easy and open, non-confrontational. “But if you do stay then you understand that you will likely further aggravate your injury and thus pin yourself to staying home even longer than you might now if you take time while it is still only a light problem, yes? And that should you end up staying at home longer than you might now that you will likely be more upset at your predicament than a short time of mild frustration at my suggestion.”
She respects him enough to stay quiet as he lectures her. Respects him enough that she’s truly listening to him, and so as he explains the reality of not letting her ankle rest she calms down, can’t do anything but accept it for the truth it is. So when he stops talking, she doesn’t instantly counter all of his arguments and throws the idea of rest out the window again. Instead she just looks at him for a few more moments, and when she eventually speaks next, the defiance has left her voice, which means the desperation becomes perfectly audible then.
“Can’t you just heal it or something?” She says, but it’s not really a question, more of a plea that perhaps this silly accident can be glossed over and she can go back to work, can stay and keep her mind occupied rather than go home to the utter loneliness of her apartment, to the emptiness that drives her crazy.
But she knows it’s useless, and so after another moment of silently looking at him with the plea almost visible in her eyes, she averts her eyes to the floor, shoulders slumping, her entire demeanour one of defeat.
“I don’t want to go home.”
And her voice is the tiniest it’s ever been, just a soft breath sighed out, a confession she doesn’t really want to make but that is too true to not speak.
