Confession: This is a nitpick but I find it mildly annoying how and grungy everyone in Skyrim is, even the Jarls are kind of grubby looking. This is a thing that has always bugged me about fantasy settings given that even ancient humans didn’t like to be dirty and historically Vikings were even more fastidious than the average European. We’re talking weekly baths and personal grooming kits. At the very least NPCs who live in the holds should look a bit cleaner than they do.

something I wonder about sometimes is how restoration magic actually works in tes and what medical theories healers have......

like yea trying to make video game logic work with real life logic is a nigh impossible task and I'm not a doctor or anything but it's fun to think about :D

do people have a concept of germ theory? or concepts of the four humors or miasma? can something be healed 'wrong'? is there any kind of preparation (like cleaning a wound or setting a broken bone) involved to heal something correctly? does restoration magic just speed up the process of the body's natural healing or something else entirely? does it leave any scarring?

also can spells/potions of restore fatigue be a substitute for sleeping/resting? or are they more equivalent to drinking an energy drink? do they have any fun flavours to add in restore fatigue potions?

there's so much to think about.......

this is extremely my shit so excuse the length BUT here are some of the ways i conceptualized healing magic and alchemy, under a cut

spells allow healers to sense the damage, but it's important to combine that with anatomical studies or you can leave lasting damage.

after getting a sense of what's wrong, the spellcaster then focuses on the injured area and manipulates it to speed up its natural healing process/return it to normal function.

it's also possible to kill this way-- stopping the heart, speeding up blood loss, etc.

wounds have to be clean and free of rot and debris before they can be healed or you wind up with a sealed infection. serious wounds have to be healed in stages to prevent deep scarring. sutures, wound packs, debridements, etc are sometimes necessary. i mayyyy have just headcanon'd this for an excuse to write about real world low-tech medicine

Colette (correct) argues that restoration is a PERFECTLY valid school of magic while some (wrong, foolish) say that manipulation of flesh is only a subset of alteration.

i conceptualized the "restore fatigue" effect as a stimulant. some are more gentle than others (e.g. herbal adaptogens vs. something like caffeine or coca)

and on a related note i imagined "restore health" potions can't accomplish the same manipulation as a spell. one might carry around something for pain relief, something to slow blood flow to prevent shock, something to combat infection. might be all you need, might only be a temporary intervention.

and lastly speaking of infection, no joke i was just drafting up a post asking the same question about humors/miasma! i don't imagine they have a concept of germ theory but i'm also curious how they would conceptualize illness. some corruption of the body's aetherial energies maybe?

the strandkorb - beach lounger
