Before I continue on to season 2, I'm gonna watch the original pilot (extended, apparently)...
I don't know when this intro was recorded (after at least a few of the films, it seems...) but I'm enjoying the social commentary and the explanations of how what he wanted to do was just a bit too out there and different for the times
Fucking love how the engineer rolled her eyes when Pike said "oh, you're different of course" like that was a compliment cuz we all know it's not tho
Oh god I remember these assholes, fucking manipulating time and shit
It's actually really interesting how, even in moments where the dialogue is the same, the feeling between Pike and Kirk is totally different. You can really see how different the show would've been if they'd gone with Pike instead.
Also it's a very interesting pilot to create, really leaving you alone with the main character and his deepest thoughts, desires, and feelings...
I'm sorry the internalized misogyny made the test audiences react negatively to the engineer, but I'm very glad we got our Kirk/Spock dynamic rather than trying to push Pike and the woman together...
(you can see how my own biases means that I haven't even tried to remember her name...)
(though to be fair Pike just keeps calling her 'Number One' so...)

It's always so interesting to me that they try so hard to find other reasons to get Kirk invested in the Mystery of the Week (pretty lady, nephew, death of an entire civilization...) but literally every single time it always comes back to the connection between Kirk and Spock.
They work together. One has to save the other. The never-ending balancing act between logic and emotion, where they pretend Kirk is all emotion and Spock is all logic, but they are both. They complete each other not because they are opposites, but because they are interlocking puzzle pieces. They fit together.
It's actually so much more than just a romantic pairing. They are literally everything.
I understand your concern. Your affection for Spock.
Oh, okay, so we're doing this in the season 1 finale then
Evil Bones episode
Uhura AND Scotty in the landing party in search of Bones? This really is a special occasion.
God fucking damn is this a hell of an episode. Kirk and Spock, off on an adventure on their own trying to get McCoy back? Immediately failing the stealth check and assaulting a police officer instead to get away with their disguises?
Kirk accusing Spock of actually enjoying Kirk's discomfort (like a human) and Spock's dry retort that this is no time for insults?
The fucking smarmy music and the pretty lady immediately after Kirk and Spock's delightful flirty back and forth, like yeah producers, cuz I'm gonna believe Kirk's taken with this woman when Spock is right there behind him...
Also, if they don't take advantage of the fact that Kirk introduced himself First and Last and then just a single name for Spock to make a Mr. and Mr. Kirk (brothers, obviously) line I will immediately break my fanfiction embargo to find exactly that. Or I'll fucking write it myself.
Every time Jim has a "love interest" and he makes some comment about how intrigued he is, the next shot is ALWAYS, WITHOUT FAIL Spock with some dubious reaction. Because he doesn't believe Kirk either.
He is us. We are Spock.
There's A (1) vacant room where she lives. For $2/week.
Kirk goes to Spock. "We (plural) have a flop (singular)."
Don't try to fool me with this "two single beds" nonsense. That's bullshit. This room has only one bed, and the lady was only talking to Kirk, and Kirk just dragged Spock along, and there was no indication that this was a room for two people, and oh my god there was only one bed, and you cannot convince me otherwise.
I'M JUST GONNA START QUOTING THE WHOLE GODDAMN EPISODE AT THIS POINT
Spock: "Where would you estimate we belong?"
Lady: "You? At his side, as if you've always been there and always will."
Jesus fucking fuck I'm gonna lose my goddamn mind
AND a US propaganda piece about how if we hadn't joined WWII when we did, Germany would've taken over? A US pacifist movement stopped the US from developing the atomic bomb so Germany did it first, and that's the universe-changing event?
FUCK THEM PACIFISTS AM I RIGHT except Spock is a notorious pacifist no wait I stand by what I said FUCK THEM
You hear me, Kirk? FUCK THE PACIFIST SITTING RIGHT NEXT TO YOU
(I've officially lost it this episode is the best episode of television of all time I've never had more fun watching anything in my life)
Final thoughts: what about the dude who took McCoy's communicator and disappeared? I was expecting the 6 to beam back up and find him there or something...
Absolutely incredible TV that would've also benefitted from a double episode (at least). They did so much in that 50 minutes and I so desperately want so much more. I feel like I just lived three lifetimes. It moved at breakneck speed and I kept pausing to yap and I feel fucking delirious

28 episodes in and I still fucking gasped when Kirk put his hand on Spock's shoulder and analysed his ears. Not because it particularly surprised me, but because it was so casually intimate.
His hand slides, just slightly, down Spock's arm.
He leans in as he crosses over from one ear to the other.
This ship is truly something special, and if I wasn't desperately avoiding spoilers I'd immediately fall down the rabbit hole of production timelines and interviews and analysis articles and every last scrap of fan theories and fanfiction I could find.
