its not a huge gripe and i won't get on anyone's case about it but i don't like it when people call Batman a mother. the implication that caring for a child and wanting a child must be maternal is something i find a little gross. he's not mom coded and he isn't single mother coded, there's just a very narrow definition of what people think is a mother and father's place. the fact that he appears "mom/single-mother" coded has less to do with his character and more to do with that narrow definition of motherhood (and fatherhood)
taking off a mask to reveal what lies beneath as a romantic gesture is overdone, and besides i want to see the romantic or even platonic potential of protecting someone's identity beneath the mask, without any expectation of ever being allowed to see what's under it. picking it up and holding it gently to their face when it's knocked off and they're in danger of being exposed, without trying to catch a glimpse of what they "really" look like under there. throwing yourself in front of them to hide them from view while they put themselves back together without taking advantage or looking back to see what you're protecting. learning to read them by body language, tone of voice, and behaviour so well that you never need to see their face to feel like you know and understand them.
"I love you but you're doing wrong in a way I cannot condone" and "I hate you but you're being wronged in a way I cannot stomach" are top tier and I need more of them.
Thinking about Joker's theory in the Killing Joke, that one bad day can drive someone to insanity. How he says that Batman had a bad day and it drove him mad too, but he won't admit it.
And not long after.... a Death in the Family happens.
Thinking about how if Bruce had killed Joker in revenge, after Jason was killed, he'd be playing right into Joker's hand, proving his point. Do you think Jason ever thinks about that? About how he was playing right into Joker's hand, by trying to get Bruce to kill? He wanted Bruce to choose him, to prove he cared, to admit that some people need to die....
Do you think after everything he thought about how its exactly what Joker would've wanted? How he was laughing the whole time, not even resisting, just as invested in seeing what Batman would do, if he would *snap*?
How seeing what Jason became after his death was probably endlessly amusing to him?
The whole confrontation that Jason sets up in Under the Red Hood, do you think he ever realizes that the only real winner in that situation was ever going to be Joker?
i think the thing about batman's no kill rule is that its essentially bruce saying "guilty people don't deserve to be murdered on the street either, actually." and he's not wrong.
saying batman created his rogues because they are obsessed with and pursue him is the same logic used to blame women for leading on or attracting a stalker. it is straight up victim blaming and I refuse to touch it
I want you flat on your back. Helpless, tender, open with only me to help. And then I want you strong again. You're not going to die. You might wish you're going to die, but you're not going to. You need to settle down a little
as my final act of love, I will swallow every "please stay" and turn it into silence so you don't feel trapped by my ache
