I posted this to tiktok but thought I'd post it here too. Whoever is directing Pluto is doing an incredible job, the whole team in fact is smashing it. This video shows the comparison of the Oom May scene from Episode 8 and Episode 11. The way they highlight the difference between how Oom words are perceived by May and how they're actually being said is beautifully done. In episode the framing, the lighting, Namtans acting was all designed to make Oom seem cold because that's how May percieves it. But when we see how Oom remembers it the lighting is softer, she's clearly upset, the framing is different, her posture is different.

I'm a nerd for beautifully excuted scenes and this is a prime example of why Pluto is a work of art not just as a Thai GL but as a TV show in general.

Marahute the eagle and her animation are some of my most formative memories of learning to adore animation as a discipline. I wore out our VHS tape of this movie just watching her sequences over and over again.

The speed, scale, weight and accuracy with which lead animator Glen Keane captures her motion and movement, and balances the scales between anthropomorphizing her and keeping her strictly animal... it's just masterful. It is so, so beautiful as a piece of craft.

As a person who usually cites the 1st movie in any series as “the best one”, it was always weird to have to tell people I preferred The Rescuers Down Under. They just read as such different movies, animation style alone. It’s seriously an /experience/.

I mean in fairness, The Rescuers came out in 1977 and Down Under came out in 1990, which explains the vast difference in animation style, but it really is a trip to go from one to the next. Especially since Rescuers was nominally a musical and Down Under isn't.

Down Under was also the first sequel to a Disney animated movie! Came smack in between Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, was just as good and just as gorgeous, but I barely EVER see it listed with the other Disney Renaissance films and that's a crime, frankly.

Just made myself so so sad thinking about Aang's marble trick because from a physics perspective, keeping dense spherical objects afloat on an airstream is not trivial, and he's doing it in a tiny little space without moving his hands. Bending is usually very gestural. So. Everyone in the era of the show is, at best, impressed THAT it is airbending. But Aang's an incredibly young master airbender. He wouldn't be acting like this was the bestest trick ever if it didn't take at least some skill; he's a goofy kid but he's also a prodigy. I bet other airbenders were absolutely blown away (pun fully intended) at the level of precision and force and minimalism of movement on display and now there's no one who understands at all why he expects accolades.
