Again, disclaimer that I haven’t been watching DS9 in order, but I loved the dynamic of Jake Sisko as a war correspondent. I feel like (from the admittedly small amount of Star Trek I’ve watched) we rarely see characters who work outside of Starfleet in a non-scientific capacity. It got me thinking about other Federation war correspondents, so I drew up my character Lhai in her pre-college days as a war correspondent (possibly on Betazed during its Dominion occupation). This was also partially inspired by Samantha Power’s memoir The Education of an Idealist which I had to read for a class not too long ago in which she detailed her time as a war correspondent during the Yugoslav War.

The Wire and its Implications for Rocks and Shoals

In the DS9 episode “The Wire”, Garak mentions that the lights on the station are always too bright. Knowing this (and assuming that this is a facet of Cardassian physiology as opposed to a withdrawal syndrome which would make sense since Cardassia Prime always seems a bit dimmer than other planets) and considering that DS9 has slightly dimmer than normal lighting, then the planet that the crew crashes onto in the episode “Rocks and Shoals” must’ve been awful for Garak. I mean, if I get headaches from being outside too long without sunnies on, imagine what it’d be like for a member of a species unequipped to handle bright lights for extended periods of time. 

On a funnier note, I’d think going from bright outside light to dim cave light would be a slower adjustment for a Cardassian, so I imagine Garak just walking into the temporary cave base and just running into everything for a solid five minutes.

Your favorite sci-fi college students (okay, definitely not your favorites, but they’ve become dear to me). I just recently graduated college, and I’m living the college experience vicariously through my quarantine comfort show (Star Trek TNG and DS9). 

Featuring: 

-A Cardassian orphan born on Bajor currently attending UWNY on a volleyball scholarship

-A Finnish art history major who rides a motorcycle and occasionally has to fill in on student radio

-A Vulcan who was dropped out of the VSA, no he doesn’t want to talk about it, and sticks close to his sister because it’s the logical thing to do

-A rebellious Vulcan coffee addict and student radio host who just wants her brother to leave her alone

I’m a TNG simp, so admittedly, I have very little reference for how Vulcans work within the confines of Star Trek canon. I still like the look of the Ka’athyra, so here’s Lhai having a peaceful jam session. Unfortunately, the UWNY orchestra didn’t have any music written to include a ka’athyra player.

I want more chaotically imperfect Vulcan and endearingly exasperated Human friendships, and if I can’t get that in Starfleet, I’ll get it from a what’s happening outside of Starfleet AU set at an Earth college.

Do radio stations still exist in the 24th century? Even if it’s outdated, I think universities, with their penchant for hanging onto outdated customs, would still encourage a student radio station; however, I do think that by the 24th century, University at Buffalo and Buffalo State College will realize that having two state colleges in Buffalo is unnecessarily confusing and will combine to form the Universities of Western New York (UWNY).

I’m working on improving my oil pastel work, and I’ve sorta been on a Star Trek kick with my art. This was supposed to be a realistic look at the Cardassian character I draw in my comics, Myral, but since I used my own face as a reference, I’m not sure this is the face and eye shape I was picturing for her. Oh well, practice is practice.

This is a follow-up to a previous comic (I’ll add it again below). Thank you to @nerdfishgirl​ for the idea for this (I saw a tag she added and thought it would be a funny continuation)! I’m debating as to whether Myral chose Vos as a cool sounding Terran last name in preparation for college on Earth or if it was just a cool Bajoran or Cardassian last name that just so happens to also be a Dutch surname.

The following is an excerpt from the August 2376 edition of UWNY Student News:

The student body of The Universities of Western New York would like to welcome Myral Vos to the class 2380 and to the UWNY women’s volleyball team. As the first Cardassian student admitted to UNWY, she is studying Civil Engineering and says she’s excited to experience what Earth has to offer.

Does anyone remember the mandatory freshman orientation you had to go to the first week or so of college? I imagine icebreaker activities would be even more annoying if you had to explain not only your name, your hometown, and the weapon you would choose to fight seven chickens with but also your species. Not to mention if you came from a fringe species that didn’t visit Earth that often.

Sometimes I watch Star Trek and I wonder what’s going on outside of Starfleet. I’ve only watched TNG and DS9, so maybe there’s something outside of that that answers those questions. Besides that, I guess I’m free to make my own assumptions, and I say college is still just as stressful in the 24th century.
