“Yo!” Pushing through the crowd had proved to be a bit more difficult than Mercy had expected - it was mostly kids running around, getting into everyone’s way that had him scoffing in frustration, waiting for them to dial it back and let him pass by. Luckily, Olivia was easy to spot in the throng of people - her red hair had been the reason Mercy had spotted her in the first place, “Whatcha doing right now?” Despite how public they were, he had no qualms about tugging out a baggy of bright pink and yellow pills from his back pocket, shaking it like he was bribing a dog with treats, “I’ve got this deal going on where sisters of dead people get my shit for free first time around. You like it enough I’ll give you a discount next time you’re interested.” @oliviasgreen

With an amused smirk on his face, Mercy watched the group of kids that stumbled off of the Tilt-A-Whirl with queazy looks on their faces, one running right into Mia as she tried to make her way passed, “Might wanna be careful,” Mercy called towards her as she recovered from the run-in, “Like to call this area the splash zone. Already been hosed down three times in the past hour or some shit. Wanna see if they beat a record, placed a bet on how many kids are gonna come off that thing hurling.” @miaxcs

Turning a corner so that he could make his way in between trailers that belonged to the more permanent employees at the carnival, Mercy blew out a low whistle when he saw Lana waiting for him exactly where she said they should meet up. He was almost 15 minutes late after getting more confused about her actual location than he’d like to admit, mumbling a pseudo apology with a quick, “Lots of trailers in this place,” Lighting a cigarette he’d kept tucked behind his ear, Mercy finally glanced over Lana now that they were face to face. Something he’d always found most attractive about her was her smile - she could talk his ear off sometimes, got on his nerves more often than not, but her smile felt constantly contagious. Now, it felt like maybe there was something missing, like she was having a hard time finding the will to put in the effort to make the smile real, “Y’good? Kinda looks like you just saw a ghost or something. Whatcha thinking ‘bout? If you could keep it to a one-sentence minimum that’d be appreciated.” @lanajvmeson

More than just a few casual beers deep, Mercy making his way around the carnival had become more of a hazard than anything else. Usually, he frowned upon partaking in his own merchandise, just a loss of money more than anything, but a girl who’d bought off him about 40 minutes ago had managed to convince him to take a pill with her. Not that he’d spent more than five minutes with her after that. Still, he was beginning to feel the effects of the MD, staring up at the clouded yet noticeably blue sky instead of where he was going, resulting in a rather rough collision when he began to veer his direction accidentally, “Watch where you’re going, jackass,” he immediately spat, despite the fact that the run-in had been mostly Mercy’s own fault. @adrianromano

Like a child purposely trying to goad their crush by mocking them, Mercy announced he was behind Saige by reaching forward and tugging once and a lock of her hair, “Lost or something?” he asked with a smirk once she’d turned towards the intrusion, “You’ve walked in a circle three times now. Around the same tent. Still the beer tent, just so you know. You lose your fake? Pretty sure you can’t actually drink the beer until you buy it.” @scige

“Dude,” Mercy huffed, eyes narrowing at Zeke as he properly analyzed the damage that’d been done to him, “you look... bad,” The words were a little harsh, far blunter than was necessary, but to Mercy he thought he was being nice, holding himself back and all from saying how he really thought Zeke looked, “Bit shit on Danny’s part, I guess. Totally went sicko mode before running away, huh?” In a move that would’ve been pushing personal boundaries for anyone else, Mercy leaned in so that he could pinch at Zeke’s chin gently between his index and thumb, turning the other’s head and glancing at the map of bruises spread across the skin he could see, “What hurt most?” @zekevd

I had at least four fake I.D’s in there, so fingers crossed she get’s pulled over.❞ She was grateful that he cared, but she was enjoying seeing him in a good mood and planned to do what she could to keep it that way. ❝Whiskey sour.❞ She offered the bartender a smile as she ordered her drink, pleasantly surprised that she didn’t need to show an I.D. She was sure it had something to do with the fact that she was with Mercy. ❝Well, I like seeing you like this.❞ She admitted, letting her gaze fall back on the male. ❝You should let me show you a good time. This is kinda my scene. I promise not to disappoint.❞ She leaned in closer, resting her hand on Mercy’s thigh briefly before the bartender interrupted with the drink. A subtle attempt at flirting that she had hoped would convince him to loosen up a little for her. ❝I came out alone tonight, so I’m all yours.❞

It was probably for the best that she decided to drop the topic of her wallet. Mercy only knew how to get things one way, and it never really ended well. Most of the time, it ended in handcuffs, and though he’d never admit it out loud, he’d be disappointed to leave Dakota’s company so soon, “Lemme know if you change your mind,” was all he said, grinning at the idea of someone being fucked over for Kota’s own illegal actions. Once she’d ordered her drink, Mercy dismissively asked for a top off of his pint, immediately focusing his attention back on Dakota. He liked talking to her, more than most - liked that she could carry a conversation when he didn’t want to, that she was gentle, almost tender with her flirting. Not something he was usually about, but happy to melt into, as easy as slipping into a pool on an overly hot day, “Your scene, huh?” he asked, barely even bothering to give the bartender the time of day when he brought their drinks back over. Instead, Mercy busied himself with looping a finger into one of her belt loops to drag her in closer again, “Sounds like a promise. Alright, I’m intrigued. You show me a good time and I’ll cover your drinks for the night. Deal?”

“next time you compare me to a John Green character, I’m going to slash your tires. car. bike. fucking scooter, I don’t care.” her tone trying to sound serious but laughs escaping despite trying not to. “buh-bye! see ya later, friend-o!” the raven haired girl waved, not giving him much attention. azure would have been perfectly content with spending the rest of the night like this. listening to the small paddle of the waves lightly splashing against the rocks. it reminded her of the nights she slept on the rocks by the lakes or oceans. sure, it was cold. but it was beautiful. his light deceleration of her name was almost lost on her. it piqued her interest. but he couldn’t know her. maybe he knew of her. her appearance at different house parties were making her name quite popular in the mouths of livingstone residents. she decided it wasn’t a reason for alert. besides, he said zee. not like he said ro- her eyes snapped open as she felt his figure looming over her, quickly scuttling back at the closeness. “what the fu- dude! you can’t just jump up like fucking zorro above someo-” dark eyes met his own. his face was familiar, like the feeling of coming home after a long day. the staring became mutual. the only noise the bugs and reptiles making their presence known and the quiet burbling of the lake. but his words broke that bubble. “I could ask you the same thing, merc.” her body resting on her forearms as she continued to look up at him. a statue of goliath compared to her vantage point. 

She was the exact same. God, it was like they were back in New York all over again, no time passing by at well. Mercy would have genuinely suspected that was where they were again, had their goodbye not been something so painful and frankly, awkward. Two kids who knew that whatever was going on between them couldn’t have ended well. It’s for the best. We don’t know what we’re doing. I have to go. His lips were pursed into a tight line, unwilling to show any real emotion to Zee after so long, like reopening a fresh wound that’d finally just healed. Showing her how dumbfounded he was by her presence would’ve been like taking the knife and splitting the skin all over again, “You gonna at least stand-up?” he asked, raising a brow at her. Even then, there was something light in his tone, like he couldn’t bring himself to really scoff at her like he could have. Should have, “I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for school. Trust me. Barely do that either,” Suddenly, desperately, he was itching for another cigarette. Yanking one out of his pack, Mercy’s next words were muffled as he spoke around the smoke, lighting it as he did so, “Expanding the business. Lots of desperate coke fiends in Vermont, if you can believe it,” he said, sarcastic thick in his tone.

“oh my god, i hadn’t even thought of that,” she said with a chuckle. “i mean, i don’t really go to school, but there’s just so many ways i could go about it, you might have just lit a fuse here,” she added, grabbing the bottle again and taking a sip, trying not to seem too desperate for it this time around in case someone noticed and decided to tweet it — it wouldn’t be the first time, and it was never a great experience. “oh, uh, michael — the murderer,” she replied, her tone mocking like there was anything funny about it. she’d heard it all, learned it was easier to say the word herself before someone spat it at her face. “i know, i didn’t think people would be so pitiful about him dying, but hey, death makes saints of us all, and i’m not gonna question the change of attitude, free stuff beats being a pariah in every possible way.”

“You ever want some help I’ll be a part of the A team. Lots of morons here I’d like to fuck over, and half of them are so stupid it’d be like taking candy from a baby,” he scoffed, the idea alone enough to make him smirk. Mercy was admittedly surprised by her answer. He’d heard about her before, but had never been able to put a face to the name. It was far easier now that she was seemingly in the spotlight, “Shit, huh?” was all he could come up with for a moment, scratching at his chin absentmindedly, “That sorta stuff run in the family, or?” It was a poor attempt at a joke, but he’d never been too good at easing situations with genuine comfort. Apparently, that was the last thing she wanted anyway, “Honestly, pretty sure a bunch of people were giving their condolences to Hitler’s family when he fuckin’ offed himself. I’d say just keep your head low. Not like you made him do it or anything, can’t exactly be blamed. If anyone tries to, you should spit in their face. It’s satisfying.”

As tipsy as she was feeling it was hard not to laugh. ❝Thank you.❞ She offered him a sweet smile, pleasantly surprised by how relaxed Mercy was. She normally got along with him, but sometimes it felt like she had to tip toe. The older male was snarky and unpredictable, but she’d be lying if she said she didn’t like it. She did always come back.  ❝Oh, yeah, I totally pissed her off. Unintentionally. Her boyfriend was hitting on me. Not my fault, whatever, but she had her friend reach under the stall and steal my purse when I was peeing.❞ Dakota shook her head, a soft sigh leaving her body as she recalled the memory.  ❝What are you doing here? I don’t see you out much. Special occasion?❞ She brushed her hair behind her shoulder and turned toward the male, wanting to give him her full attention 

Mercy couldn’t help but scoff, but there was the ghost of a smile on his face. Almost as if he wanted to, but wasn’t sure how, “You know what eyes,” was all he was saying before leaning against the bartop, resting his chin in the palm of his hand as Dakota began to ramble into her version of what happened between herself and the person who’d stolen her wallet. One thing Mercy could say about Kota was that she was constant entertainment - he couldn’t remember the last time he’d seen her, whether it was at a party or on the sidewalk in the middle of the day, and she didn’t have some story for him to hear. Glancing around the bar, he quickly cut in to ask, “Which one are they? The chick and the boyfriend. I’ll get your wallet for you,” he left it at that, waving to the bartender when they made eye contact in the moment, “What’s your drink?” The same grin was reappearing when she noticed his uncharacteristically good mood, shrugging casually to tip her off - he didn’t want to appear too soft, “Maybe I’ve turned a new leaf,” he said, punctuating his sentence with a single raise of his brows, “Whatever. Today wasn’t shitty, so. Why not, right? At least the company’s good.”

Saskia was looking for a certain person, tapping them on the shoulder as she popped the bubble of her gum, trying to dissipate the smell of vodka on her breath as she offered them a smile. “I have a favor to ask. My dealer’s outside, and he’s offering me some free weed. But only if I get you to talk to him. Apparently he has a crush, or something.” She ran a hand through tangled brown hair, looking at a hole in her fishnet tights, pulling at it with her index finger. “Thinks you’re cute. Don’t worry, he’s harmless. Just like… really awkward. Think he wanks every night to photos of people hugging.”

At this point, Mercy was ready to go home, upcoming migraine in tow. The people surrounding him were bothering him more than anything, and his annoyance only grew when he felt someone tap his shoulder, turning towards the brunette and merely acknowledging her with a single raised brow, “You want me to what?” he scoffed, glancing around them as if the boy in question would pop out at them any moment now, “Yeah, think me talking to him right now would be the worst thing I could for you. Counteroffer, I’ll give you whatever I got on me if you go tell him I said to bugger off. Force him to, like, grow chest hair.”

Long brown curls lay across her back, brushed behind her ears and as out of her face as possible. It was a rare occasion that Dakota wore her hair down and when she did it was usually to impress someone. She was a pretty girl through and through, but had a bad habit of being lazy and masking it. The taste of whiskey was still prominent on her tongue and the alcohol in her veins was starting to kick in, making her feel confident. She swayed across the dance floor, allowing herself to collide and dance with anyone she came in contact with, until she was spit out on the other side right next to the bar. That’s when she spotted the recognizable mop of hair.  ❝Hey, stranger.❞ She came up behind Mercy, hoping not to startle him, ❝Wanna buy me a drink? Some bitch stole my wallet earlier. I could use a hero.❞ She leaned up against the counter, resting her head in her hand and batting her eyelashes at the male. 

For once, Mercy was in a relatively good mood. He rarely drank at bars, usually liked to stay on his toes for anyone he knew that was looking to buy, and this was one of the busiest places for business. However, he’d made more than his fair share in less than an hour - apparently, the Watershed had people more desperate for some sort of narcotic distraction, and Mercy wasn’t about to complain. Generally, he enjoyed Dakota’s company, but he found himself actually grinning at the smaller girl when she approached him, seemingly out of nowhere. Nodding once in greeting, Mercy was immediately scoffing when she was asking him to buy her a drink. Not that he was about to say no, turn her away. Still, he attempted to put up a bit of a fight when he mumbled, “The eyes don’t work on me, y’know. I’ll get you a drink, but it’s not because of the eyes,” Insistent, always insistent, as he turned towards the bar again, “You piss this bitch off or were you just making yourself an easy target? Honest mistake. A rookie one, but still. Honest mistake.”

it was wildly refreshing, having someone not act like their own best friend in the world had just died, and a complete relief to have her joke not be met with judging eyes or the sad look she kept getting these days. she couldn’t place the guy, but she was starting to grow fond of his company, right now at least. “god, i know, every time there’s a vote or something i fear it will end in death and then how will i get free stuff, you know,” she said with a sigh. “think now that i’ve shared my misery with you, you’ll feel inclined to share again? i feel like i’m a shot away from drunk enough to make it back to the crowd, you know.”

Without ever really meaning to, Mercy had a habit of using sarcasm to the point where it bit down hard on the ego and feelings of the company he tended to keep around. A smirk appeared on his face when she tacked her own continuation of their joke, that was hardly in good taste, “You should go all Pretty Little Liars on the school. Keeps the attention on you and shit if everyone thinks your brother’s come back from the dead to haunt our asses,” Holding the bottle back out towards Olivia without hesitation - Mercy figured she deserved it - he eyed her up and down shamelessly, trying to place her face amongst the victims of Livingstone, “Which one was your brother?”
