Decade

10 years since I was 13 years old

What a ride it was

Crazy ups and deep dark lows

Accomplishments and success stories

Disappointments and dissatisfactions

A few weeks ago, my friends were talking about what their teen minds thought their lives would be like in their early to mid-20s. Most said they would be rich and married, some with their ideal dream job, and others with kids and dogs. They laughed and joked because for many of them they were wrong.

During their conversation, I stayed silent. I recall despising the typical prompt of “where do you see yourself in 5 years or 10 years?”. I always wanted to write dead. I didn’t think for one second that I was capable of living 5-10 more years of my life. When I graduated high school, I was beyond amazed that I survived and made it so far in life. And I am still shook I made it through college. 

I cannot count the number of times in the decade I wanted to die or kill myself, the times I hated myself and thought I deserved nothing, I called myself fat, ugly, unworthy, and unloveable. I cannot count the endless amount of time spent crying in my room, car, or shower. 

What I can count are 10 years I survived and push through. I can count the number of people who helped me through the decade. 

Cheers to a new decade and never giving up hope.
