Swami Satchidananda opening Woodstock 1969
On August 15, 1969, Swami Satchidananda was asked to give an opening address at the famed Woodstock Music Festival to set a tone of peace and harmony for what became one of the largest gatherings in festival history. He addressed a crowd of over 500,000 people.
“Through that sacred art of music, let us find peace that will pervade all over the globe. Often we hear groups of people shouting, ‘Fight for Peace’. I still don’t understand how they are going to fight and then find peace. Therefore, let us not fight for peace, but let us find peace within ourselves first.”
A full transcript of his opening address, can be found here.

It lulls me. The river is like a drug. What I suffer from seems unreal when I come here.
