The Watchers of the Straight Gate, oil on canvas (1894). Anna Lea Merritt (American, 1844 - 1930) Born in Philadelphia to a Quaker family, Anna Lea Merritt spent most of her career in the UK after moving to Europe in her early twenties. Following the sudden death of her husband, art critic and conservator Henry Merritt, just three months into their marriage, she turned fully to her art to sustain herself.

Channeling her grief into allegory, she gained widespread acclaim for compositions that explored spiritual themes and the threshold between life and loss. In this composition, two angels stand watch just inside Heaven’s gate. One cradles a set of scales to weigh passing souls, while the other holds a crown of wild roses to welcome the accepted spirits home. Merritt drew directly from her own world to build the scene. The winding path beyond the gate was modeled on the steep country road leading down to her village in Hampshire. For the background, she secured special permission to set up her easel inside the National Gallery in London, painting its rich red marble columns directly from life. Loc.
