SYNTHETIC NATURE: AN EXPLORATION OF SPATIAL MORPHOLOGY

Romanian architect Vlad Tenu focuses on the integration of computation, science and technology in the creative process of his design research. His collection, Synthetic Nature, is a set of prototypes created by his holistic architectural design research into the genesis of form and space. Throughout the art is an analogy with the molecular behavior of soap bubbles, which involve nature’s algorithms, geometrical constraints, and mathematical relationships.

Now, you know we couldn’t do all this lasercut egg stuff without trying to actually laser cut the egg itself. Thus, we present our Easter Jack-o-lanterns- Jack-O-LENTerns, if you will (Christianity pun for the win!).

We don’t currently have a rotary attachment for our laser cutter, which would allow us to cut cylindrical objects- it’s on the list of things to do. With the extremely limited focal range of the laser (a couple millimeters at best), cutting anything with a curved surface is extremely difficult. Therefore, we limited the size of our designs to try to maximize the even(ish) surfaces of the egg.

Several burnt and broken eggshells later, we ended up with a couple nice examples. Blown eggs illuminate beautifully, so we decided to appropriate some imagery from the night sky. I’m partial to the Big Dipper egg, but the scattered star egg turned out quite nicely as well.

It’d be amazing to cut a whole bunch of constellations into blown eggs and display them together with LEDs… Easter weekend project?

Quite often we find ourselves quickly sketching a thought out on paper and then wanting to digitalise it and store it away for later use. We do of course have scanners for this purpose, but the activation and use of these devices is a deliberate and focused task that requires playing around with software and settings when all you really want is a good quality image of your drawing.

Generally speaking our mobile phones are always at hand and feature cameras that are more than adequate for scanning our work as long as you can hold them still for long enough to avoid blurring the image. That’s where the Camera Phone Scanner comes in, simply pop the phone onto the adjustable platform, set the height up for the paper size you want to scan and then email/dropbox/bluetooth etc. yourself the image within seconds….
