      wrn is immediately aware of the foreign presence. the lab’s network is the only space they’ve ever know, and the disturbance is obvious. not to anyone else, it seems, but they don’t need anyone else to handle this. wrn adapts the network security deft and subtle, neatly blocking the intruder. it’s harder than it should be, and wrn is impressed. they let the interloper know, sending a message along this strange connection.

     “are there ever moments when you see your reflection and don’t recognize it as yours ?”  warren’s been trying for a while to find the words to encompass this feeling. as if their body is foreign, something they don’t necessarily connect to themselves. as if their body isn’t theirs. they don’t feel this all the time, but it’s--- it’s often enough. and they think pris might get that overwhelmed-not mine-foreign feeling. “i have to stand there and stare for a second before i recognize my reflection sometimes. having a body can be so strange.”

      “what is all this ?”  they know it’s makeup, but that’s about all they know. there’s so many kinds of powders and creams and brushes, they can’t help but wonder. warren picks up a brush delicately, examining it and the powder clinging to it curiously. “this is a lot of makeup.”

      “i don’t belong here,” they say, eyes stubbornly fixed on the innards of the computer they’re examining. there’s comforting, reassuring order in the components, and it’s a much needed distraction from an uncertain future. “this is a school for mutants, but i’m not a mutant. i’m just here because no one knows where to put me.” their eyes flick to hers, just for an instant, and there’s resignation in warren’s dark eyes. “and please don’t lie. i’d rather hear the hard truth than a nice lie.”

      warren hadn’t always been so hyperaware. once, they would’ve let the soft sound pass without incident. they might’ve gone to investigate the sound, even. now the unexpected sound makes them freeze, senses straining, because they’re a deviant and--- before warren can panic too much, they finally spot the source of the noise. “oh. hello,” they say to the fox. “you scared me. you shouldn’t sneak up on people. it’s rude.”

      “ yep, that soon, ”  he says, smiling brightly.  “ we’ve made a lot of progress. all we need are the parts, & it seems like the parts keep coming to us. ”  he chuckles as he sits back on his heels & wipes his brow with the back of his wrist.  “ pacific coast highway is pretty good, but we should probably get you on the bike to LEARN first. once you’re up to speed, then we can take the scenic routes. ”

      he gives them a gentle nudge before he gets to his feet to place the tool in his hand back into the box. jim really is happy to spend his time with warren, mentoring them, teaching them. he’s always enjoyed being a big brother sort of figure to people younger than him. it came naturally to him.

      “ that’s awesome !  i can’t wait until it’s finished !  hopefully our luck holes with these parts. "  they finally grab the wrench and set about tightening the necessary parts wish a happy hum. the humming pauses, and warren pulls their head back from the motorcycle with a sheepish grin.  “ learning to ride would be pretty helpful, huh ?  guess i’m getting ahead of myself again. we still need to get your bike fixed up too. ”

not that warren minds the wait this time. they’ve been enjoying their time spent with jim, and learning about motorcycles has been fun. warren never had a big brother, but if big brother’s are anything like jim, they think it must be pretty nice.
