The Power of Art: It Can Make A Difference
If you turn on your local news channel, no matter the time of day, there are often stories about injustice and inequality that leave you feeling distressed. Whether it be the constant fight against world hunger or the daily updates on the troops overseas, the hopelessness that fills our bodies is hard to swallow at times. Thankfully, we have artists who work tirelessly to bring light when there seems to be only darkness. Creativity is a beautiful gift to be shared and by encouraging positivity, art allows the body to heal and release negative energy. Injustice cannot be defeated overnight. As long as our community continues to grow and become aware of the change that is possible, we can move mountains.
To prove the power of art, here are three examples of how art has inspired positive social change in our culture:
1. The United Nations enlisted the help of Beyonce Knowles to represent the “I Was Here” campaign for The World Humanitarian Day on August 19, 2012, hosted in New York City. “I Was Here” launched as a global humanitarian campaign and challenged people all over the world to perform good deeds for others. On the day of the event, at the U.N. Headquarters building, Beyonce performed her hit song “I Was Here” while a powerful video was projected on a large screen behind her. The production showcased the incredible efforts that are being made across the globe by various humanitarian organizations. The campaign generated 1 billion messages of hope and services to those in need around the world.

Beyonce has always had a passion for helping others and is well-known for supporting relief efforts. She uses her positive energy and artistic abilities to shed light on important socio-political issues in a way that unites the community.
2. The tragic death of Michael Brown has gathered public support and peaceful protesting against the police force in Ferguson, Missouri. Marcellus Buckley (age 22), a Missouri native, is an example of how creative expression can influence others and inspire positive social change. Marcellus has been an active member of the Ferguson protesting since they began on August 14, 2014. He uses spoken word to gain the attention of local law enforcement officials. Marcellus appreciates that his poetry offers a nonviolent expression of anger. He believes that in order for change to occur there must be a peaceful approach to protesting. As Ferguson struggles to heal from the violent acts imposed by their law enforcement, Marcellus and his spoken word will continue to fight for equality and love.

Poet turned activist, 22-year-old Marcellus Buckley is bringing the bleak reality of Ferguson, Missouri to the eyes and ears of local officials.
3. Founded in 2006, Get Lit is a nonprofit organization in Los Angeles, California. It uses the performance of classic and spoken word poetry to increase teen literacy in Southern California. Get Lit offers a creative outlet for at-risk youth who are interested in learning to read and write. The element of performance is included in Get Lit’s mission. Teens are encouraged to take their poetry to the stage and release their thoughts on life in front of an audience. The organization is providing teens in need an environment that is both welcoming and educational as they transition to becoming adults in violent or unstable homes. Since Get Lit was founded, over 50 schools in California have incorporated this program into their after school programs.
If you’d like to learn more about Get Lit, please visit their website at http://getlit.org/getlit/.
Get Lit members Rhiannon McGavin, Zariya Allen, and Belissa Escoloedo performed their poem “Somewhere in America” on the Queen Latifah Show on January 20th 2015.
So there you have it. One piece of art, one inspired individual has the power to generate change and positivity in the world. In the words of Mother Teresa, “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.”
Don’t be afraid to make waves - change won’t happen without them.

Getting ready for the big 2015 Kickoff! #FFKickoff2015 #cooking #yum
This week Face Forward members Rivka and Estifanos met up at the open mic at The Starry Plough in Berkeley, CA, where they and Maya "coincidentally" have all made their new homes this year. On the wall, this quote:
"No Revolutionary movement is complete without its poetic expression. If such a movement has caught hold of the imagination of the masses, they will seek a vent in song for the aspirations, fears, and hopes the loves and hatreds engendered by the struggle. Until the movement is marked by the joyous , defiant singing of revolutionary songs, it lacks one of the most distinctive marks of a popular revolutionary movement; it is the dogma of the few and not the faith of the multitude"
-James Connolly 1907
They're feeling inspired and excited about co-creating Face Forward California as a contribution to the vibrant community arts scene in the Bay Area! Check out this clip of Estifanos' performance, and keep your eye out for more FFCali updates :)

Support Young Artists: Pre-Winter Break Talent Show
The arts know no age restrictions when it comes to talent, and Roosevelt High School is going will prove it on Wednesday, December 17th. Chadwick “Niles” Phillips has brought his gentle determination and encouraging attitude to a group of students, and the end result is a Pre-Winter Break Talent Show.
Mr. Phillips taught his course “Hip Hop, History and The Arts” in partnership with YMCA Beacons out of Roosevelt High School in South Minneapolis. His unique curriculum has taken education to a level that is more relatable for students. Some students use hip-hop to complete essay assignments or remember math formulas. As it turns out, hip-hop can even be incorporated into a science project! Mr. Phillips has taken it upon himself to take a leap of faith with this curriculum, and it has made all the difference in the lives of these children.
If my words have not convinced you, then set aside two hours of your day tomorrow. From 3:00-5:00 p.m. this Wednesday, December 17th there will be a Pre-Winter Break Talent Show at Roosevelt High School. The event is free! Most importantly it is an exciting, youth-oriented family-friendly event. Everyone in the community is encouraged to come see what these youth have prepared to showcase. There will be some hip-hop, rock and roll, R&B, dance, poetry and so much more. Come support local art, education and youth!

Something for the Soul: The Avant Garde Launch Party
Chadwick “Niles” Phillips has made waves in the Minneapolis artist community and touched the lives of hundreds of students at the High School for Recording Arts in St. Paul. His talents span from hip-hop artist to song-writer to educator to actor. He’s a renaissance man that seems to never slow down. His latest artistic endeavor is the Avant Garde, an entertainment and arts production company.
Niles will be hosting the Avant Garde Launch Party at Bedlam Lowertown this Saturday, December 13 at 10:00 PM. The night will be a stunning showcase of local talent including Lia Renee Dior, Theo Brown Music, the Kevin Washington String Quartet, Margeaux Davis, Proper-T, and DJ Dan Speak. Furthermore, the event will feature the talented live painter Lorenzo Crockett. Niles’s approach with Avant Garde is to bridge the old and new generations with art. He recognizes that art and music are one thing that people have in common with one another. If that connection can be fostered for a greater good, then we can move forth in a more productive society.
The evening will also be a celebration of the Bedlam Theater’s new location. When a theater with such a fervent ability to bring together the artist community couples itself for an evening with a talented productions company like the Avant Garde, the air will be vibrant with the kind of spirit only art can create. The experience will be a unique one—the perfect way to start your Christmas season and the best note to end your year on.

And people wonder why news/media outlets like #CNN and #Fox damn near spoke the violent reaction (riots and looting) to the Ferguson verdict into existence! It's not enough ratings to cover non violence or up lifting things... They up played that violent stuff well before the verdict came through, they went in with their agenda and battle armor too! Society: Society views me as an object to be scrutinized. Self: I view myself as a strong and confident work in progress. ~ Kallie Schell Over the past year, Face Forward hosted a series of community photo shoots that posed the question of how we FACE IDENTITY in our lives and art forms. Artists were given the opportunity to take two portraits: 1) how artist feels society views them and 2) how artist views themselves. We will be adding photos throughout the month of November in hopes of inspiring others to reflect on how their identity plays a role in their work and lives. Society: Society may view me as peaceful, passive and possibly a little bit unkept. With long wild hair, a lingering smile, and a sense of controlled chaos, I may seem like a business class hippie. Self: My hair is out of my eyes and I'm climbing. I'm confident - I'm looking up and I'm decorated with my history and my culture. The picture does not show where the ladder ends and I'm not sure where that is either, but I do enjoy the view.
