“Getting my bike repaired. I bike in every day and I don’t really have the time or the money to bring my bike to an actual shop to get it tuned up, so I was really glad DigiPen did this [free bicycle tune-up event].”

“Waiting to talk to my faculty advisor.”
What are you going to talk to your advisor about?
“Just about the week. I just like doing a weekly check-in with them and talking about what’s been going on.”
Is that a helpful resource?
“Yeah, I think so. I don’t know if it’s one that many students will end up using, because they see it as a sign of weakness or something, I don’t know, but I like to do it. It’s a good practice. It’s free help and they’ll tell you about the school and where things are."

This week's question: What's one of the greatest challenges you've overcome this school year?
"As an artist, at least for me, a lot of your work is personal. And you can keep working on it and tooling with it until it’s due, and sometimes when you get critiques on it, it’s really hard to not think shamefully of yourself. …It’s like a psychological battle on top of just getting all the stuff in."

“Definitely getting used to living alone. That was a big adjustment, I think. I was used to living with my parents for a while. I wasn’t really big on camps. So coming out here and attending a pretty hard college is a massive hill to overcome.”

This week's question: How have you changed since your first day at DigiPen?
“There are so many memories that come to mind. How have I changed? I guess I’d say I’ve matured more. Not in a bad way or anything—but I’ve learned to develop who I am as a person and know what I want to do. I have the confidence now to know I want to do art in this field. Going into DigiPen, I had no clue what I wanted to do.”

“I feel like a professional artist now. Before I came here, I was totally an amateur. … [Now,] it doesn’t matter what comes at me—I can tackle it.”

This week's question: How have you changed since your first day at DigiPen?
“I am a completely different person. I have a very different definition of work. I was a lot less likely to speak up about things. I was a lot less likely to put hours in, even for things I enjoyed—I’d have rather just sat and played video games and whatnot. The other big thing is that being at DigiPen is the first time I’ve ever had to lead. I’m the producer for our game right now, which has been interesting. It’s very, very different and stressful being the leader. I’m not entirely certain I like it, but it’s definitely a good experience.”

This week’s question: How have you changed since your first day at DigiPen?
“I used to procrastinate a lot. But then at DigiPen, well, you can’t really do that or else you’re going to have problems.”

This week’s question: What’s your earliest memory of making something?
“I remember my dad taught me how to draw a lion. It was like a stick figure lion. I just copied that over and over and over, instead of coming up with my own ideas, because I knew how to draw it so great.”
How old were you?
“I was three. That’s probably the earliest I remember.”

This week’s question: What’s your earliest memory of making something?
“Making my first speaker. My grandpa and I used to do a lot of handiwork, and he taught me how to make a speaker. We got a nice wood frame and put it in there. It was really nice—something I’d never done before. I still, to this day, can make a speaker by myself.”

This week’s question: What’s your earliest memory of making something?
“My earliest memory of making something, in a general sense, is when I was a little kid and I was bored in class, I would draw mazes. I have a memory of a maze I made that was the front and the back of a piece of paper, so you had to flip it over when you were doing it. It was a very unique maze. I’m pretty sure it was unsolvable, too.”

“Probably the wildlife. There’s a lot of raccoons and squirrels [in Seattle] even though it’s this big city.”

“One of the mountains [in Alaska] where I go hiking all the time—prospectors pulled more gold out of that one mountain and made more money on it than the total amount the U.S. paid for Alaska.” —Matthew Wendel, senior RTIS student from Alaska

“I dunno, Vancouver [Washington] is pretty normal. Right across the river is Portland. Their motto is ‘Keep Portland Weird,’ so we get a lot of Portlanders in our area. That’s the weirdest we get.”
