On the subject of Tranquil in the comments of my previous post:
I will fight people who abuse the Tranquil. Because it’s not only Templars who mistreat them. Mages and civilian Chantry brothers/sisters mistreated them awfully.
It’s literally stated they can barely care for themselves, let alone defend themselves from any form of harassment/harm/whatever.
It boils my blood to think of someone so defenseless being used in such a way. And the Venatori who force them into becoming an abomination then kill them with a spike to the back of their heads. It’s vile.
Since it’s fresh in my mind from other tumblr posts, did you know as much as I love the mages’ side of the conflict, in recent play throughs I’ve come to appreciate choosing the Templars more.
Two reasons; one is because of gameplay. Having the mages as your primary enemy throughout the game is much easier to kill than the armored to hell Templar mutations with the red lyrium chucks and all that.
And for the other… Well, gaining Barris as an agent for the inquisition has some nice flavor from war table missions. And then there’s the better (in my opinion) introduction for Cole.
See, you can meet Dorian before you chose Templars or Mages, which I found really great.
(I think it’s kinda shitty that there isn’t a meeting similar to that for Champions of the Just, I stumbled into it without realizing that was the start of the mission, not an encounter like with meeting Dorian and Fiona)
So, again, you can meet Dorian before you chose who to side with. Which gives him showing up before Corypheus’s forced to warn Haven more meaning. It makes sense, oh hey, we met this guy, he showed up to warn us!
But siding with the mages, Cole shows up and his completely new. Who’s this guy? Is this a trap? Show we trust a perfect stranger?
Choosing the Templars introduced Cole in his element, trying to help you escape from your own mind. Classic Cole, and it lets you know from the start that he’s … a little more than just some kid with daggers.
And then there’s the story line of finding out more about Calpernia and her trying to free slaves. Got me right in the heart. I need to refresh my memory on that whole quest line before I ramble about it, though.
So then, Cole joining the fight made more sense after he’d help you escape the demon’s clutches, and that absolutely hilarious scene with him popping up in the middle of the war table….
Anyway, my point is, I came to love the elements of choosing the Templars over the mages. Even though I sympathize with the mages just a liiiittle more than the Templars, the mages’s side of the storyline felt like it lacked in post-In Hushed Whispers story content. (Though the Red Thedas we see in In Hushed Whispers inspired a nightmare or two in me and some amazing angsty scenes to write…)
If there’s anyone out there that has more perspective on the mages’ side of the storyline they wanna share, come to me and we can talk about it! ;3 I’m not one to bash or hate for seeing a different side, and maybe there are things I missed that makes the mages’s side have more depth.
Sorry for the silence, I got a bit sickish the last week or so x_x

The Mage Craftsman, Kelvryn
Name: Kelvryn (born Solaris)
Birthplace: Unknown, left at the doors of the Ostwick Circle of Magi at 5.
Appearance: Elven, blond hair, blue-purple eyes. Depending on where in the timeline they are encountered, they have the Tranquil brand.
While Tranquil they are forced to present as female and responds to their birth name Solaris. After their Tranquility is broken, they resume their chosen identity as a male named Kelvryn.
(Note: Sol/Kel is based loosely on Prompto from XV because he’s tied directly to my dragon age!AU for Ignis)
Sol/Kel was born in 9:24 Dragon, and left at the Ostwick Circle in 9:29 Dragon. All they could remember is having nightmares of the coming Blight, and people being afraid of them. The nightmares stopped when the Blight began.
When Idris returned to Ostwick after failing to find a cure for his blindness, Solaris became his student and his guide. Eventually, Solaris got brave enough to admit the desire to be addressed as male and called Kelvryn, or Kel. Idris encouraged them to do what made them feel stronger and happier emotionally, because that was part of building mental fortitude for protections against possession.
In the chaos created by the Mage Rebellion, rumors started that Kel was looking for dark ways to change his body, that perhaps he would attempt blood magic, which would only end in disaster. In spite of Idris and Kel’s best efforts to dispel the rumor mongering and accusations, it was decided and executed that Kelvryn be made Tranquil, and forced to return to being called Solaris and dressed accordingly.
After the war started, and the Conclave explosions, the Tranquil Solaris accompanied Idris and the other mages, Tranquil and those soldiers who joined them as protection on their journey across the Waking Sea, and into Ferelden. There, they encountered more than just the mages and Templars fighting. The Venatori were capturing Tranquil, though they had no knowledge why. Solaris was caught, but then freed by the elven mage Rowan and her party. Badly injured, Solaris was taken back to Haven for treatment, where Rowan accidentally broke the Tranquility set on them.
Sometime after that, resuming the name Kelvryn, he became attached to Rowan, who was helping him deal with the aftermath of the Tranquility. They sought after the band of mages Kel had been a part of and reunited with Idris.

Long Journey To SkyHold || Idris
The journey to SkyHold was long, cold, and surrounded in uncertainty and hope. Add blindness to that to make the trek all the more difficult. He was lucky, however, to have his young guide Kelvryn, and a few others who’d made him feel welcome among the Inquisition followers. The grounds of SkyHold were unfamiliar, of course, and with their arrival having been so recent the place was a chaotic mix of noises, smells, and movement.
“Kelvryn, where have you gotten off to?” The words were softly spoken, because he knew the young elf had probably been recruited to help with any number of tasks and didn’t expect a response. Instead, he was using his staff as a guide in front of him and making his way toward one of the great stone walls. Perhaps when night came and the rest of SkyHold was resting, he would begin pacing out the open areas to create a mental map for himself.
Idris heard the click and clank of someone in armor soon enough to step to the side and out of their way, and into the path of someone else he hasn’t heard near him. Idris’s shoulder bumped firmly into them and he took a stumbling step back, using his staff to regain his balance.
“Ah, forgive me, I didn’t realize you were there,” he said with a pleasant tone and a hand raised placatingly. Idris was tall with short ash brown hair. His eyes were closed, and his face marred with old scars, the largest covering his left eye. “I’ve lost track of my assistant, Kelvryn, and I’m unsure where I have ended up.”
what pride has wrought.
