Hi :D I love your blog and I was wondering and I hope i'm not being annoying or offensive, but does United States of Tara present alters correctly or no? Thanks <3
Hey, nonny!
First, thank you! I’m glad to heart it <3 Next time, come off anon, ‘cause I’d like to meet the people who like me :D
I honestly can’t answer this, as I haven’t seen the show (I’ve heard of it, just never watched it). But I’m gonna go ahead and say no, it doesn’t, as most media portrays alters, systems, DID, and OSDD types incorrectly. And don’t worry, you’re not being annoying and/or offensive!!
If anyone from the DID/OSDD community would like to add to this, that’d be cool?
I’ve seen all the seasons, and I would say that United States of Tara is the most accurate portrayal in media of DID I’ve seen, but there are definitely things they get wrong.
One of the reasons it’s actually really good and close to accurate is because the writers hired someone with DID to help them write a character with DID.
It shows that she had early life trauma, it shows co-consciousness, it shows the basics of an inner world, and other things that are relevant with DID- including various types of alters.
The things they did get wrong was that they show Tara physically see her alters (which can happen, but not often I don’t believe), and also it talks about the alters dying- which cannot happen.
I think critically it was a very good show that did better than most at portraying DID, while also focussing on other characters and their own separate issues.
Hope that was clear and made sense. ❤️
@ anon!!
this is good post but @ the anon alters can die in most systems as far as I'm aware?? we've had some deaths and so has my partner system + most other systems I've met have had deaths
